It could be possible that the reason so many people believe themselves to be "prophets" is because, they may have moved in the gift of prophecy, or word of knowledge, or word of wisdom, and those around them proclaimed them to be a prophet without knowing... then they felt such pressure to perform that they began to believe it themselves.. but as you said, there hasn't been enough teaching on the subject because most of the Church thinks that the office of a prophet has been done away with... just my two cents.
