Thank you so much for taking the time to be so thorough. I am awed by the list of skills and applications, and I'm wondering if you are speaking from years of experience in addition to education. Do you think as a student you felt comfortable as a new grad, with adequate hours studying and practicing these responsibilities? I've been looking into both MSN and DNP programs as a CA RN currently working on a BSN. Wondering how well they prepare you for practice. I would like to open my own private practice and explore creating a team providing therapeutic care for people experiencing mental health issues.

@behrpalomo4479 Thank you for watching and for your questions. I am speaking from some experience as an RN (now 18 years), and I have been practicing as a PMHNP for now ~7 years. I think nursing school prepares you to pass the board exam, and your clinical experiences prepare you more for feeling comfortable to actually practice as a new grad. This is why I often say, "focus on your clinicals," in both your BSN and MSN programs. Application of the didactic information is key. I think your goals are awesome! You may want to consider practicing for an organization while starting a private practice, due to the learning curve, but it's completely doable and worth it! (IMO) I'd love to hear what you come up with. Keep me posted. :) -Camellia D.

I am interested in what you feel the differences in scope of practice are between a PMHNP and a Psychiatrist.

@Sally Jane Thank you for your question. While there are similar capabilities between a PMHNP and a Psychiatrist, there are also major differences. A Psychiatrist is an MD and licensed as such. A Psychiatrist is required to complete formal training just as any medical doctor is required (which includes residency). Training is also based in a medical model. This allows a Psychiatrist to have a full scope of practice including medication management, psychotherapy, and clinical procedures such a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and ECT. Due to expertise and training, Psychiatrists oversee the practice of PMHNPs. PMHNP training is based on a nursing model and designates an individual to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. A PMHNP does have clinical training as well. A PMHNP may practice after obtaining a master's degree and clinical training. While a PMHNP can perform medication management and psychotherapy within their scope, there are some limitations (although this may be state-specific). For example, in most states, PMHNPs cannot perform or oversee medical procedures such as TMS or ECT. PMHNPs are not medical doctors. Generally speaking, both provide psychiatric/mental health care for individuals across the lifespan. I hope this provides some clarity but please feel free to reach out with any additional questions. -Camellia D.

Hi Camellia, thank you for providing your insight and experience into the PMHNP role. My personal nursing diagnosis as of today is “Career Intolerance, related to reaching the learning ceiling of my current job & molding to personal life changes, as evidenced by recently finalizing a pursuit to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and utilizing my 25 total years of RN experience to the best of my advantage & abilities, so that I may bring joy and care to patients like I used to do years ago, in a refreshed & wholesome way.” Wish a brother luck 🤞🏾😊

@ WHATS TRENDING Thank you for your comment and for watching. It sounds like you have some purpose in your next steps on your journey. It's inspiring that you want to give back to others based on your experiences. If you want to strictly do psychotherapy, I would recommend also considering the LCSW or counselor route, as PMHNPs don't have a ton of focus here. I hope this helps but please feel free to send me any additional questions you may have along the way. Let's stay connected. -Camellia D.

Hi Camellia, do you happen to know if nurse practitoners are eligible to work out of state? I'm thinking about getting certified in CA and working in a different state but I'm not quite sure how that would work
@CamelliaDThePsychNP
@CamelliaDThePsychNP 2 жыл бұрын
@Daniel C Hi. Thank you for watching and for your question. Yes, you may work out of state as an NP/PMHNP but need to meet requirements of that specific state. It is actually fairly common for NPs working in telehealth to practice in various states. I would just ensure you meet all requirements to obtain and maintain licensure. Does this help? Please let me know if you have other questions. Take good care, Camellia D.
