What is a QALY?

In this video, Katherine demonstrates how to calculate Quality Adjusted Life Years or QALYs; a unit of benefit that can be used to assess the extent of the benefits gained from a variety of healthcare interventions. To calculate QALYs, we multiply the length of life expected to be gained by the new treatment or invention by the quality of life a patient can expect to have. Quality of life is measured on a 0 - 1 scale and this score represents the value of different levels of health.

To those of you saying this video made it seem simple....it's because it is. However the ethics behind the calculations and how pressure can be put on the formula is what needs to be looked at. if Political decisions alter resources are we to change the formula in order to dispose of "expensive" to treat patients. Also what if we pack the decision making process on "Quality of life" which in itself is a highly subjective term.

The value of a QALY is based on a questionare survey asking people how many years of "healthy life" are equivalent to X years of disabled life, until death. This data gives you the QALY score per each disability. Good luck with your thesis BTW.

i just wanna know how much a life is worth for a year to the nhs. The maximum the nhs will spend to keep someone alive for 1 year.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) usually regards a health intervention as 'cost-effective' if the cost per QALY is around £20,000 to £30,000. Note that this refers to a year lived in full health, not just the extension of life by one year. Interestingly, many new interventions are still accepted if they are above this cost threshold, particularly when considering end-of-life-care.
