Direct age standardization and indirect age standardization are two methods for comparing the mortality rates of two populations. This is sometimes called the age adjusted mortality rate. These are methods used in public health and epidemiology to better understand death rates.

What if two population structures are similar, can we just accept the crude death rate?

Great video, although probably worthwile mentioning that population data are not representative of Ireland. Not sure how you could fit 202 million on this island, it would risk sinking ;-) ...

i hope you can do better.... in table, at single man, age 75, the calculation of the rate is so wrong.... it reverse the sense of the story. this video is a good example of frequent mistakes!

Sir i have a doubt in direct standardization in age 75 Single men population is less but the rate is high But in married men population is more but rate is less The doubt is for small population death rate is high the single men are at high risk right Another doubt is Crude mortality rate is low in single and age specific death rate is high in single can you clear my doubt pls 😢

so helpful! I wonder is it possible to use standardization to standardize other rate, such as morbidity rate or hospital admission rate? or is it only specific for standardize mortality rate? and do we always need to standardize every data we read before making interpretation? I really appreciate if you could answer my questions....

How to decide how to stratify age groups? If they are too stratified (0-19, 20-39...) the results are not the most precise, but if they are not at all (0,1,2...) things can go wrong when numbers are low. For example, if we standardize 1960's death rate on 2019's age pyramid, the 100yo deaths will be very unstable, because there are many 100yo in 2019 but the sample rate in 1960 is very low

Get a bigger standard population, and apply it to all years, it will eliminate the horror of Decimals. That's in direct standardisation. Indirect standardisation is usually no challenge.

I believe there's a mistake in the table for single men. Specifically at the cell for the age of 75, the rate should be 0.541 (64386/119000) not 0.323. And yes it's amazing how a small mistake in statistics can make a huge difference in our perception (because in subsequent calculations you used the wrong rate). Imagine if that small mistake of yours affected public policy and it wasn't actually that small.
