I didn't realize it until this morning when i saw my car door ajar. The thieves stole one of my jackets and went through my glove box. Thats when i realized this was the second time it's happened. The first time I had nothing in my car at all and the thief left my glove box open but shut my car door. at the time i thought i left my GB open for some odd reason. Now i know it's someone who lives in my area or possibly even my neighbors. ( We never speak to one another ) Well its the last time. I got a new FOB and I purchased a Faraday antitheft pouch. I'm also adding additional outside cameras to my home security. Next month I'm installing airlift suspension on my car and I'll be damned if i step outside and see my equipment stolen from my trunk. The air suspension will also work as an additional antitheft. You can't steal a car or it's rims when it's wheels are tucked under the car's fenders and the car's frame is slammed to the ground.

We're manufacturing a thin flexible PCB that slips in between the battery in your key fob to stop this issue! It shuts the key fob off when stationary, and wakes it up on movement - so you don't even need a faraday cage/pouch. This should stop relay attacks since the car fob is essentially dead until you move it.

Some theft doesn't even use relay attack, they will break the window to open the door, and use the OBD port to program a blank key. The only way to stop this is to lock the OBD port, or take out fusses/relays for the ignition system, but should they decide to tow your car there isn't much you can do(unless you take off all the wheels or block your car with some heavy things). Still none of those would happen if the car makers just simply stop adding this unnecessary feature, I mean you still need to use the keys to enter your home, why not just keep doing the same for the car?

You do know that we enter our cars 40 times more than our front door? That’s the reason. Most people will leave lock their door and then unlock it only once when returning. Not always but most. Most of these are scare tactics. Working in cryptology/cryptography, most cars are impossible to start, or even use the OBD port to make a new “key”. This is all propaganda. A majority of thefts are owner negligence in some manner.

@@Audios81 With all due respect, the reprogramming does not involve hacking of any sort, sure there are CAN injection attacks as well, but that is still the minority. Most, if not all the tools the thieves use are fully legit kits used by the manufacturers/dealers themselves. If you want to talk about negligence, then the car manufactures should be the ones to blame.

Maybe a simpler solution would be a switch on the fob. Switch it off once you lock your car. Absent of a switch, just remove the battery

Also if you have a spare one you never use take the battery out. That would help also. That would not just help for theft prevention but sometimes batteries left too long in things can leak and destroy the electronic item they are inside. I have seen it before with alkaline batteries but that may be possible with other types too. Really I don't care much for the smart fobs just because they are a security hazard. Some key fobs can be turned off with a combination of buttons on them pressed. I heard it can be done on Toyota fobs but I wonder how on a Nissan or other fob. It would be nice to see a list of the brands and what needs to be done to deactivate their fobs. Considering how few buttons they have it wouldn't surprise me if they were all similar.

If the headlights turn off after leaving the car with key fob, that means that the car is completely off and the battery won't drain at all.

They may be more difficult on the latest models, but the early model smart fob BMW and mb is how thieves in Europe created and perfected the art of the relay attack

Midlands Police in the UK uploaded a youtube video regarding this very type of attack back in 2017 -- 5 years ago. The title is called "Relay attack Solihull" with 1.6 million views. Just because code and devices aren't on clearnet doesn't mean they don't exist. The attack (at least back then) required targeted coordination and multiple involved parties, but it has been proven.

Someone tried to do it to my car last night and I got it on my ring doorbell. my neighbour had two range rovers stolen in two days and they came back 4 days later for the porsche. It took them 22 seconds to steal the range rover.
