How do you know what your project needs to build to meet the requirements of users? And, once built, how will you check that your new system fulfills all the users' requirements? The answer, my friends, is a Requirements Traceability Matrix.

RTMs are one of those things that make sense to people who've done project management courses, but none to anyone sensible who has practical experience of software development.

It would be good if you could illustrate the tracibility matrix with a real example.

Getting real examples is tricky for all sorts of reasons. But, I hear you.

Has anyone used this technique for Construction or MTCE projects?

That's a great question and I don't know the answer!

Yes, we're currently RTM in a design-build effort (i.e., data center, operations center types of project). We use an excel template to create the RTM and document end-user needs and requirements. As the design progresses, we go back to the RTM to validate traceability through design floor plans and drawings. For example, let's say an end user requests a video wall system with multiple inputs, or a floor plan with 16 offices. Assuming these requirements are documented in the RMT, you can then review the floor plans and verify conformance. The process is bit tedious, but it gives stakeholders who don't know how to read drawings and plans peace of mind. Hope this helps!

I am in the process of learning how to go about creating an RTM, but this video doesn't provide any concrete examples on how the matrix is supposed to be created. I don't think this video helped me that much, besides giving me definitions for things I still don't know how to do.
