A lot of younger movie fans have seen slip covers from their first Disney dvds and blurays and just treated it like extra packaging to trash. So those are the types of people asking these questions and why slip covers matter. A video like this informed me of one thing I hadn't known. The first pressing mark on the Lionsgate steelbooks. I don't collect them in particular, so I had no idea.

Ya know, Jeff? I want to thank you. You’re one of the only content creators who focuses majority on physical media who goes out of your way to emphasize and stress that “Hey, I prefer the 4K, but if all you got is Bluray or even dvd? Who cares, collect, if it works for you it works for you!” I’ve seen some content creators who make you feel bad if you have one pixel less than the highest quality 8K, 10K whatever😂 (I’m not counting people like Daisuke Beppu or 20th and 21st movies, who I feel focus more on THE FILM and the tech specs are more an after thought for them). So for that, my friend, I thank you 🥳

Australia cheaps out on packaging big time. In the past few years almost all major boxsets have been multiple cases in a cheap cardboard sleeve. Then look at the exact same release in the US and it comes in a nicely designed single case eg Hitchcock 4K collections, The Godfather 4K set etc. yet we pay pretty much the same price - sometimes more - for an obviously cheaper set.

@@ddc2957 you’re probably right, though I’m thankful we have JB hi-fi which is stocked to the max with discs - as I keep seeing Americans getting smaller and smaller shelves for movies in Walmart, Best Buy etc. I find it strange they don’t have a JB equivalent considering their market. I have to say I prefer the slim cases simply because I can fit more on a shelf and space is precious haha

Where are your JBs? I’m in Sydney & they seem to be shrinking sadly. JB World Square I think carries no discs at all anymore & Broadway still quite a bit but noticeably less than 2-3 years ago. It does make practical sense I suppose to have slimmer cases for room. I limit myself to a collection of 300 so Aussie cases fit my shelf almost perfectly with their size.

I do really like to have the slipcover, if it has unique features such as shinyness, sparklyness, embossing, different artwork from the inner case, etc. I just wish that they wouldn't make it soooo much more difficult to get a slipcover if you don't buy the movie RIGHT away at release... However, *not* getting a slipcover absolutely does NOT mean that I won't buy the physical copy of that movie I want.

My son used to work at Target a decade or 2 ago and the DVDs with the slipcovers wouldn't fit in their theft protection plastic cases, so they would take them off and throw them away. There was also a local video store that would order say 10 copies of the new releases and would then pull off and throw out the slipcovers. Hard to believe these days. One thing you didn't cover that I feel deserves a mention is the special slipcovers that Walmart gets on catalog titles for special endcap promotions. They had the Deadpool covers on a selection of Fox films like Logan and War for the Planet of the Apes. They've also recently had the minimalist red and white and black Valentine horror films like My Bloody Valentine. Currently they have some "Wanted Poster" art on western films for Father's Day like Hateful Eight and Django. Some of these are really nice looking.

FYI they're also called "O rings" by people in the industry. They originally were on DVDs because they make the artwork look sharper than the version under the plastic on the actual disc case. Unless there is something unique on it (say it's lenticular) I always toss them. The vast majority of my BDs are in CD jewel cases to save space and my DVDs are on spindles sorted alphabetically.

Ironically, it's the steelbooks that should, and often don't, have the slipcovers, since they are easily scratched and damaged. A plastic case has no need for a cardboard slipcover, except maybe to prevent the shrinkwrap from coming apart in the stores, which I think is why they were introduced in the first place.

Jeff, I knew one day you would eventually get to slipcovers, and you did not disappoint. Excellent Video. Do you think it's possible that one day, you'll do a follow-up video and talk about custom slipcovers? If I'm not mistaken, I believe there are people out there who make custom slipcovers for Blu-rays and 4K discs. Custom slipcovers can be a really good alternative for those who missed out on the first run / limited edition slipcovers. Also, for my fellow collectors, something to be cautious of when buying from Ebay? There are Ebay sellers out there who'll post stock photos of a blu-ray or 4K with the slipcover but when you get the product, it's only the case and disc, but no slipcover. As Jeff stated, definitely look for photos that were actually taken, (not stock photos) when purchasing a disc with a slipcover. And if you're not sure, send a message to the seller asking him or her if the disc in question does come with a slipcover. Hopefully you'll get a response fairly quickly. I'm just putting that info out because I was burned once when I thought I was purchasing a movie (from Ebay) with the slipcover (based on a stock photo) only to get it delivered without one.

I was a big slip cover fan maybe 10 years ago, especially the ones that had foil effects and/or embossing/debossing. Disney had some truly FANTASTIC ones for their older animated classics, Sleeping Beauty's Platinum Edition in particular. But hardly any movies in Europe comes with slip covers anymore. I don't even remember last time I saw a movie with a slip cover in Sweden and even when I visit UK or order from there there are hardly any slips. When they were just starting to disappear I even went to sites for custom made slips (never bought any or made any myself, but the idea was there), but when I realized it was a permanent change across all releases I couldn't be bothered. I switched to Steelbook instead, which has turned the other way around and become a too over saturated market for something meant to be a somewhat nicer and more limited packeting, but I still buy most of my movies in steels if they get one, though I've since many years stopped buying just any steel that got released, just focusing on those movies I really want.

In my opinion, slipcovers are essentially an overly-praised piece of cardboard. It’s actually wild to think about. I would much rather have just the amaray with a disc and booklet inside (if it provides that in the first place) talking about the film. This kinda stuff has always been funny to me because I see people that go nuts over slipcovers meanwhile some people can’t care any less about a slipcover. People are usually really on board with them or are just very apathetic towards them lol, me fitting in with the latter group mentioned. It really is just a ‘to each their own’ thing but people should make sure to appreciate the films as well! That’s why we are all in this hobby in the first place, the love of film. People should remember that.

The slipcover obsession is real in most cases. I was hoping you would mention Solo and what happened with that release, 2 different slip covers one being more limited than the other and that was the only Star Wars movie to have that problem. The rest were easy to get. Solo slip remains high on the aftermarket sites 100 + typically.

I was lucky on TGTB&TU slipcover. A spokesperson for KL said they had some extras that they would offer for sale on a Blu-ray website forum announcement. I managed to get one there.

In Norway prices were always dumped on steel books and slip cases for 4K and Blu-Ray, DVD etc, because they never sell out. It's the opposite of Ebay prices here. They are dumped instead of being sold at "collector's prices".

Another factor is whether the release is part of an ongoing series, because there are a lot of collectors who aren't too bothered about slipcovers in and of themselves but do want their spines to match on the shelf. For example, a few years ago Dinsey reprinted all their animated "Classics" with numbered slips and, consequently, one of the Winnie the Pooh movies started going for silly amounts of money on Ebay because it happened to have a smaller print run than the others. Now, new titles get a slip with the regular poster artwork on release and one of the matching numbered ones follows a few months later.

I'm a sucker for packaging, slip covers, steelbooks, the lot. I love it when a disc is packed with goodies and artwork. The more the merrier. Hell, I'd buy a disc that had a slipcover over a slipcover over a slipcover. Plain plastic doesn't showcase my collection like an over-cooked snazzy package does.

You know I've always wanted to know what is the propose of those Eco Friendly or what ever those cases with the Holes are called, because they always feel so cheap to me. So much so I feel I could easily crack or even break the case just by holding it. You know what I'm talking about the cases with the Holes on both sides of the case?

For the most part I keep the slip covers but I really don't think about them. So what about the plastic covers on steel books or the paper flap that is glued to the back, same basic principle?

My slipcovers stay in relatively nice condition now (some of them that I’ve owned since back when I had little kids running around the house, maybe not so much-lol). There have been a couple of rare occasions where I accidentally dropped my Blu-ray case that has a slipcover on it, that I think it normally would have cracked the case but didn’t because it had a slipcover on it. That extra layer actually (potentially, anyways) protects more significantly than maybe what many people realize. Plus, if I’m getting even just a little bit more product (the slipcover) for the same price as I would without the slipcover, that’s a win in my book.
