Honestly this hits so true for me. I was out of country during the Dune 2 IMAX release window so outside of the story my actual experience watching it was extremely subpar in a standard screening. Hits harder too because, after having seen the first part in full IMAX, I knew exactly what I was missing and left disappointed. What's more, I don't see the opportunity to even experience a piece of the IMAX experience now that it's out of screenings and IMAX blu rays weren't available for Dune 1 and won't be for Dune 2.

It's a common misconception that GOTG 3 was released on "IMAX" on 4k but that's not true. What james gunn did is shot the whole movie with Imax(1.90:1) and shoot some integral scenes in 1.85:1(Little bit taller than imax) so on imax theatres or on disney plus whole movie is in imax aspect ration (1.90:1) and on 4k BD some scenes are in 1.85:1. Since imax's exclusive aspect ratio is only 1.90:1 so they can only prohibit studios from putting that aspect ratio on 4k without paying lisencing fee. But some filmmakers found a loophole by shooting the film with imax certified cameras but making the aspect ratio a little bit taller and then the slightly croped version gets released as an imax presentation and comes on physical media with full aslect ratio without paying the fee. Sadly james gunn only did some shots and not the whole movie that's why some scenes were cinemascope. But you can check on disney plus the whole movie is in imax. But some directors Have used this trick for the entire movie like Jurassic World 1 and 3 and also avatar 2.All this movies were shot with imax cameras but by slightly tweaking with aspect ratio they release the uncropped version on 4k. I wonder why not all the directors do that.

This is correct. The studios do not pay a cent to IMAX to present the film with floating aspect ratios. It’s only Disney that uses this as a marketing gimmick. You are also correct that this is a mastering expense, which is all done digitally. We just pull the 2.40 AR shots and replace them with 1.90. Warner has zero interest in double dipping with this. This will only happen if Denis gets personally involved and requests this from the studio. Studios will bend over backwards to make their talent happy.

For those few of us with home theaters using projectors and "scope" screens with approx. 2.4:1 aspect ratios, the widescreen format works better than having the aspect ratio change from scene to scene, as in the some IMAX discs. So here is one vote in favor in the wide screen format used for Dune Part 2.
@HeroesReforged
@HeroesReforged 2 ай бұрын
8:20 - The thing is though that very few films shoot 65mm 15-perf like Nolan. Most shoot full DCP size, which is 1.90:1, a ratio that’s technically wider than 16:9 but is letterboxed on a 16:9 screen. So you’re still seeing the full image.

I keep trying to explain this to people when I see them complain about this issue, particularly in regards to Dune on 4k. People seem to think that because they saw it on an IMAX screen that the movie must have been shot in IMAX. They don't seem to understand that theaters can show any movie they want on an IMAX screen, and they will if they think people will pay premium prices for it. That doesn't mean it was shot in IMAX.

Denis and DP Greg Frasier have talked about this. When you see an IMAX movie, the screen is so large that they focus the majority of the action on the 'proscenium' (the center of the screen) because that is all your eyes can take in. The remainder of the screen is "peripheral atmosphere". When viewing at home- the entire screen Is the proscenium. And now, the composition and framing are all wrong. There is too much headroom in the composition- because you were never meant to take in the entire screen as the Proscenium. The framing becomes very apparently "off".

This reasoning only brings up more questions with the case of Dune Part 2. It wasn't even shot on IMAX film cameras, only the Arri Alexa 65 and LF, so why would the expanded image be absent? And it isn't directors intent either because in an interview when asked about the physical release, Villeneuve sounded confident that the expanded image was going on the disc. Edit: So it looks like this goes deeper than I initially thought. None of the Marvel movies given the "IMAX" branding on Disney+ were actually shot on IMAX film, so I guess the IMAX title is some kind of hostile patent on the 1.90:1 aspect ratio as well?

Dune 2 clearly was meant to have an expanded ratio. Some scenes are overly claustrophobic or completely cropped out. I see this as a major fad for home video. Just like 3D blu ray was. It will survive in the theatres. As long as theatres survive. But it is such a niche thing at home, 99% of us don't care. Personally, I have never liked IMAX. And every film has some level of frame cropping. Including IMAX. To clean up the edges of the frame and shots. This is sort of like the change that happened from full frame DVD to widescreen. People who make money selling the public gimmicks keep switching the aspect ratio of things, so that things can continue to be sold over and over. Example, full frame monitors and tvs to widescreen. Movies on blu ray, dvd that already released in one format now to widescreen. Then re released to "IMAX". It is all a gimmick. So you see 20% more at the top and bottom. Meanwhile the sides are gone. And even some of that IMAX frame is STILL missing for cleanup and to tighten up the shot. The sooner this gimmick dies in home media the better...

I disagree. 3D for home is way more flawed than IMAX-enhanced is. 3D has the two formats of glasses, the inconvenience of the glasses, the ridiculousness of 3D on a smaller screen, the loss of resolution and lack of max resolution potential, and the display and player hardware requirements. All IMAX enhanced does is let utilize the full screen that you paid for and who wouldn’t want that? Plus, the option of DTS:X although hardware is required for that aspect.

Its wild that IMAX owns an aspect ratio. That's like owning a shape or a color. Pretty sure full frame already existed long before the first IMAX theater popped up. 😂

Please correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t switching aspect ratios on disc usually follow switching aspect ratios from theater film? I believe Dune 2 had a IMAX release and a scope release without switching aspect ratios.

The Same seems to happen with laserdisc releases of both movies and music, Laserdisc releases seem to be longer than DVD or blu-ray releases at times. boggles the mind. Even stranger, with the 100th Anniversary release of Titanic, they did release extra footage on DVD and Blu ray, to an acceptable standard, yet, didn't cut into the film? Odd.

The business aspect I can understand , it kind of makes sense from IMAX point of view. Now, in terms of aspect ratios I truly dislike the switching of ratios-it feels like a cheap trick. The first Dune has only a few scenes in IMAX so the 2.39:1 makes sense for home viewing. Dune Part Two was formatted in IMAX so the 1.90:1 (IMAX Digital) can be added as an alternate version for home viewing. James Cameron’s Avatar movies are also shown in 1.90:1 IMAX and are then modified to 1.78:1 (16:9) for home-it’s a win-win. I’m not buying Dune Part Two on physical media unless they add IMAX-have you noticed how wrong the close-ups look in the film in 2.39:1?

I would've thought that they would want to limit full IMAX picture on video releases to draw people into the cinema, so that the cinema has something that you can't get at home. And like jeff said, TVs aren't suited to the IMAX picture ratio, but with the advent of flexible OLED displays maybe someone can make a TV that can fold and change aspect ratio to suit an IMAX picture. Something like the LG Signature range of OLED TVs, I would love to see something like that. But then that would require a special anamorphic disc release formatted for that aspect ratio.

They don’t really have to do a “IMAX enhanced”. All they really have to do is format a 16 x 9 version and it be very close to the picture you get in IMAX.

I'm sorry Jeff, but this is confusing. You state in this that IMAX receives a licensing fee in part because they, "used IMAX cameras," so if they use those scenes they have to pay a percentage to IMAX. They didn't use two cameras to film the same scenes in these movies so whether or not they crop it to 1.78:1 (16x9) or 2.39:1 not they're using footage from those IMAX cameras. What you're basically be saying here is that IMAX has it written into their agreement with WB that they own any portion of the image out of the 2.39:1 scope. I just have trouble believing that, but I suppose it could be possible.
@Tom-qo4mz
@Tom-qo4mz Ай бұрын
I don’t know the answer to your confusion, but it’s worth noting that the only ‘imax cameras’ that imax owns and rents out are their 15/70 imax film cameras, which outside of Nolan, very few things are shot using. The overwhelming majority of stuff shot for imax is on digital cameras that are designated as ‘imax certified’ i.e. imax has endorsed these digital cameras for use in films that will be getting an imax release. I can understand imax making money from the use of their imax film cameras, as they own them, and then possibly there’s an element of imax also potentially having some sort of interest (i.e. some form of, but I’d assume certainly not exclusive, ownership) of the footage shot on them, but from the limited amount I know I do not think it likely that imax owns any of these imax certified digital cameras or the footage shot on them that has an aspect ratio of 1.90:1 or 1.43:1 that’s intended to be released in imax. It would be more likely that it’s the manufacturers of these imax certified digital cameras owns these imax certified digital cameras, who rent them out to filmmakers, and it’s these manufacturers who probably pay money to imax to have them certified by them. Do note, I’m not talking about imax not having any form of ownership or interest in the final imax release of the film (the DCP, and then any home release that’s ‘imax enhanced’), as this it’s clearly the case that they do (i.e. the main point of Jeff’s video), but just not for footage shot on ‘imax certified’ digital cameras nor the ‘imax certified’ digital cameras themselves

I haven't seen the Dune 2 disc yet, just commenting on my similar thoughts about Oppenheimer... I might be in the minority, but I thought the constant aspect ratio shifts on Oppenheimer were super distracting at first. Even after a few viewings at home I still don't quite understand Nolan's rhyme or reason as to why certain shots are in 16:9 vs 2.20:1. While shifting aspect ratios in general don't bother me when done appropriately, it often (again, in my opinion) looks better in theory than it does on a disc at home. This will probably be a hot take but I feel like Jordan Peele's Nope 4K disc utilizes Imax much more tastefully than Oppie. To be fair, I have never seen a real made for IMAX film in true IMAX so I can't speak to the theatrical experience, I just think it looks really annoying at home.

If you make a movie wih Imax cameras and release it in Imax in theathers, you HAVE to include it in a home release, especially when distributing it in physical media. That's why I'm sure it's the distributor's decision, and not the director's. It could be a sign of the fate of physical media.

I mean... really? I don't know. Seems to me that they could simply release the disc with that aspect ratio, without saying "IMAX Enhanced" or whatever. The entire film was shot that way, and WB/Legendary own the film, not IMAX. It seems weird to say that IMAX itself owns some exclusive copyright or has exclusive licensing rights over a certain aspect ratio. The wider ratio that's on the disc is just a cropped version of the full IMAX ratio film. Furthermore, the 16x9 ratio that often gets used on discs like The Dark Knight for the IMAX scenes isn't actually the true IMAX ratio. So, again, it seems to me like WB should simply be able to release the film in 16x9 if they want to.

The thing is with Dune 2, none of the film was framed for 2.35:1. It was a switch between 1.90:1 and 1.43:1. In IMAX showings. Because of the framing, the grand scale of the scenes are lost at the 2.35 aspect. Warner released Justice League as well as a 4K ultimate edition of Batmas Vs Superman. They could justify Dune. Specifically Dune 2. Besides the increase in framing, the clarity of the IMAX native shots is way superior to what the standard footage looks like. It's not even close. When I saw Alita in IMAX, the difference was immediately noticeable. Studios are penny pinching these days. But 4K UHD buyers are the film enthusiasts. They should be supporting them. I don't need it on DVD or Bluray.

Let's be honest here. The so-called "IMAX" on home video is pretty much the standard 1:78:1 aspect ratio. That is not the real IMAX aspect ratio, by any stretch. And, if I remember correctly, the only movie on home video that used the real IMAX aspect ratio was Zack Snyder's Justice League. Basically, we're talking about an image closer to the old 4:3 aspect ratio; so, on our modern, 16:9 tv's, that image would have black bars on the sides of the screen. That's exactly how Justice League looks on its disc release.

Thanks, Jeff! Appreciate the info about IMAX being its own business, not just a format. That's a bit of an eye opener that I wasn't aware of. Makes me quite disappointed that WB didn't share/pay the extra shekels with/to IMAX to make a perfect disc release for both Dune movies. Or maybe IMAX and WB are holding off on a deal to have a separate release for a physical copy of Dune, which will press super-fans to double dip... capitalistic ingenuity at its finest, lol.

As a photographer, I find the constantly adjusting aspect ratios kind of disappointing. When movies are shot to be shown in multiple aspect ratios, as a cinematographer you can't really have any intention behind your compositions. You treat the frame as quite literally a photo frame where the image you are capturing perfectly sits within that shape. When you have to have that image fit 4-5 different shapes, from a square down to a thin rectangle, you can't shoot with much intention. I think Nolan's early films are his best looking because his films have thought out compositions, whereas his new ones since going for IMAX have all had a sort of generic centre framed, widely composed look so that they look okay in 1.43 as well as 2.35. I would quite happily watch Oppenheimer in 1.43 even on my TV if it meant it looked the same no matter where you watched it, and Nolan and his team could actually shoot for that intended look. I think 1.43 would actually suit the period setting even more as that was the standard in the 1940s. As an example, look how much nicer Zack Snyder's Justice League looked in 4:3 versus the Whedon version that cropped his original shots to 16:9 - say what you will of the film itself, but Snyder's original compositions look a million times better in their intended format.
