When i was 17 i spun all 4 rod bearings in my celica being dumb. They were destroyed. 17 year old me didnt know better, so i bought some nice rod bearings, put them in through the oil pan, cranked them down with no torque wrench, and was super proud lol. I started the car, it sounded like it had serious cams in it. "Brap brap brap brap brap" then it blew up again after driving it 100 feet lmao. Lesson learned. I learned a ton of lessons the hard way, but the hard way to learn is still a way to learn.

This is exactly why I am "Not" a believer in low viscosity oils like 0W - 20. Heat in an engine causes the viscosity of oil to be reduced. Furthermore, high viscosity oil help compression and oil pressure. If you put a "full synthetic" (which is a blend of synthetic and mineral oil) 10W-40 oil your car, by the time you change the oil it is not uncommon for that oil to from a 40 weight viscosity down to a 30 or even 20 weight viscosity. I always like to look at racing for what is probably the best components and products for a car. In NASCAR they use a 100% Synthetic 10W-60 engine oil for racing for the reason I explained above. It needs to be noted though, 100% Synthetic oils do not have viscosity breakdown until usually 10,000-12,000 miles. And why you can go longer between oil changes with 100% Synthetic oil. Also, 100% Synthetic also leaves a film on engine parts that protect from "dry starts". I always say, if it is good enough for NASCAR, then its probably good enough for my car as well.
@motorcarnut Жыл бұрын
Good write up! Many people can learn from this. Most of the problems new cars have is way too tight oil bearing clearances and lack of changing the oil results in a high amount of engine failures. BMW comes to mind with there 1000 of an inch oil bearing clearances, ridiculous.

We drove home the next day, my uncle picked us up from Newark airport, that night I get a call from Boston police telling me they found my car. My car was at a towing company sitting on the ground in Dorchester a suburb of Boston that is mostly black and Hispanic, the owner of the company helped me scavenge parts from other vehicles there, tires cap rotor battery a screwdriver to start the car, no internet back then so he had a Chiltons manual to look up the firing order, when everything was together my baby started right up, the guy who helped me would not accept any money for helping me, all I had to pay was for the storage the towing etc, I tried and tried but be refused any money, I had to drive the truck because it was a stick, my girlfriend drove the Malibu, I followed behind and after a while we pulled off the highway so I could ask her how the car was, she said there were no problems, after a while driving we stopped for something to eat, when we came to a toll she told them, no easy pass back then either, that the truck behind would pay the toll, we made it home around 3am, the next day I set about the task of putting my car back together, I had the factory wheels and caps which were painted to match the car, that's the way it came new, there was a bump in the floor behjnd the drivers seat due to the car being dropped onto a cinder block which damaged the body mount which eventually rusted out, that feeling of being violated like most people who have had their house robbed or their person assaulted for some reason the car just didn't feel the same, I did drive it for many years after but I had lost interest in it, maybe it was because I was older I don't know, she even climbed pikes peak when I drove to Colorado to visit my sister's.

If the rod bearing spun inside the rod journal and looks darker than the others because of heat I’d say you have to measure the rod journal but that requires special bore gauge etc so if in doubt just replace the rod with a good factory used one if you are on a budget don’t buy a new aftermarket one they may be different weights and that’s not good.

Dirt and debris can cause it as well. Lack of oil changes even though oil level is fine, fatigue is another one.
@bluegizmo19833 ай бұрын
@Motorcarnut yeah I think it was due to high milage and a severe sudden misfire... the car had 240,000 miles on it (oil was changed regularly though) and the spun bearing happened immediately after the ignition coil plug for cylinder #3 came loose while driving, causing a very rough running condition. And the rod bearing that spun was the bearing on that same #3 cylinder where the coil came loose.

@bluegizmo1983 that’s probably just a coincidence. If the cylinder was not firing it wouldn’t blow the bearing.

There are a few other things to fix. Need a bunch of money to invest in it, only for it to still depreciate... Whats also annoying is that this is the second engine already, it's been replaced once. This would be the 3rd time. Seems like these Hyundai engines keep burning oil, and cause friction. I'll see if I could ask them to just replace the parts you said, and ill provide the parts. so ill just pay them per hour.
