INFORMATION:
Link to Contracts - animationguild...
Most studios are signed to the "Master Collective Bargaining Agreement" but in a few cases, studios have separate agreements. The "Collective Bargaining Agreements" mostly mirror the master but might have some studio-specific difference. If you have questions, please ask here and if you're currently working at a studio ask your Shop Steward!
Union Benefits - animationguild...
This is a comprehensive guide to the benefits Union Members of the Animation Guild have.
Additional Material on Benefits -
• TAG 401k Video - Dec. ...
New Member Introductions -
• TAG New Member Present...
Joining TAG when you get a Union Job:
THE INITIATION FEE
This is a one-time fee that is charged when you first join the Guild. The fee is two weeks’ minimum scale wage in the job category in which you’re first hired (that is, not your actual rate of pay). This fee is included in your balance when you are set up as a new member.
The Guild frequently waives initiation fees when a contract is signed after an organizing campaign was used to reach the agreement.
To estimate your initiation fee, check out the minimum scale wage of your job category, or contact the Guild office.
THE IATSE REGISTRATION FEE
Our parent union, the IATSE, charges a one-time registration fee of $100. This fee is included in your balance when you are set up as a new member.
DUES
Dues are charged quarterly (once every three months) to all active members and are due on or before January 10, April 10, July 10, and October 10.

How do you know if the job you want or have is union or not? Do studios tell you if they are a part of the union? Does this affect freelance or self-employed animators? I'm still confused about how getting a job as an animator(and in general to be honest) works. I also talked with someone in the industry and they said that you should always have a contract when working with someone...what should the contract include? Stuff like a timeframe to respond or deadlines?
@AnimationStoryGroup
@AnimationStoryGroup 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Vitani, this is a great question! We are currently creating content that will answer these exact questions. But, to quickly give you an overview. The complete list of Union Studios can be found: animationguild.org/about-the-guild/studio-list/ - That will give you an overview of the studios that are part of the Union, you can also just ask if the production is Union and they will tell you. If you are working full time or freelance for a studio, it can be Union. Every hour you work Union freelance contributes to your pension and the hours you need to retain your MPI health insurance status, which is a minimum of 400 hours a year. Contracts are another issue I will have to go over in more detail because most studios have basic contracts that essentially say, "Don't sue me, don't tell everyone about our property, and this is what I'm paying you".

Be both, there's a lot of overlap with story development so working on one won't necessarily neglect the other too much. If you do write, write for live-action, they're part of the WGA and get paid a lot more than the animation writers who usually fall under the animation guild writers rates unless they're in primetime animation (Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, Family Guy etc..)
@danoconnor8913
@danoconnor8913 5 жыл бұрын
If you are a Writers Guild writers, thats the writers union, you will make AT LEAST double of what anyone in the animation guild makes. And if your work is a hit, you will continue to receive residuals for any rebroadcast of that work for the rest of your life. Animation artists are the only creative guild in Hollywood that creates content and receives no monetary residuals. A successful writer in Hollywood is wildly lucrative, which is why there are so many Ivy League graduates doing it.

So does the union produce animated content or is it a collection of people that have jobs that support union regulations?
@AnimationStoryGroup
@AnimationStoryGroup 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Krittera, I'd like a little clarification on your question. Are you asking if the Union produces the animations for this Channel? Or are you referring to the structure of how Union artists produce work for studios? If the latter is your question, then my answer is this: The Union is made up of artists working for studios. A Union Studio is a studio that has a collective bargaining agreement with the Union because they organized and become a Union Studio. Union workers work within various studios on what ever the productions might be. The Union is not a production house for the studios. The Union represents the workers working for the Studios. I hope that answers your question.

If I may suggest a video, maybe one on where you can go to learn about storyboarding? Is College the only way, or are there more ways that many people (me included) are unfamiliar with?
@AnimationStoryGroup
@AnimationStoryGroup 5 жыл бұрын
Ultimate Landon Great question! Every artist has their own story on how they got to where they are professionally. There are many people who benefit from College, but there are specialty classes that you can learn a specific craft. Out here in LA an example of a speciality school would be Concept Design Academy. There are many online classes as well that are affordable. Ultimately, if you work hard at any class or College you will improve. We’ll work on a resource post that can list options that Union Members have used.

Yeah, but the greater Los Angeles area is one of the most expensive places to live, by far. Very very high rents and real estate, and you need a car.

I think she meant to say "monthly" XD that´d make a big difference. I was offered less than a thousand monthly NET for a very important Netflix animated feature that was just impossible for me to accept. (it would have even cost me money to work there).
@danoconnor8913
@danoconnor8913 5 жыл бұрын
The average house in Los Angeles costs just under $1 million. Get out your calculator and do that math and you'll see why MOST 30-something professionals in animation live with a roommate. The sales tax alone in our city is 10%. Thats on everything. Add to that massive utility rates, the necessity of a car, a guaranteed long commute, and the highest gas prices in the country and you'll see that its just getting by to make the minimum rate in Los Angeles and if you want a family, its totally untenable. In fact animation artists are the lowest paid skilled workers in the IATSE west union. You can make just as much money picking up cables as a grip on a live action set - and it would be better because that union has an established roster that protects your job and keeps you employed. Animation artists have to switch jobs at least once a year, and every time they switch jobs they have an unpaid hiatus. So if you have two multi week breaks between jobs in a year you can make over $15k less that year than your weekly rate suggests you make.
