I had to include reference material about you and your work (sorry if that's a little creepy) but my professor LOVED my presentation and said picking you for a reference was an EXCELLENT choice (and I got a 100!) So thankyou for your all your helpful material! And if you want to see the video of the presentation -let me know and I'll send it to you! :) Thanks again !!

It's a high school project not a reference for a job or something. I'm sure your teacher didn't even contact this person so you're fine. If you ever want to network with professionals in your field, you're best bet is to find them in linkedin or give them direct messages not comment on a youtube video (where they might not see it). @@mewTripled --excellent video. As someone who has hired and fired board artists (storyboard director), I'd hire you. But. Do you really need to say 'fuck' in your vids? I say the word in a work setting from time and that's not my concern. Nor do I care how you present yourself, but it (IMO) it's jarring when you are offering info to students that is so great. I don't hear that many board artists using the word in the office unless they get a horrible script and are told to make it funny. And turn it in faster. And do the character designs and size relationships and backgrounds and prop designs and give the rough designs to those respective folks so they can use them for the board once you're done.---. Then, yeah, fuck. Do your fucking job, please. I will add that I was trained and hired in the late seventies, and HAD to be one of the 'boys'. As you know (until recently) our business has been 90% male. Departments full of ink and paint that were only women of course, but board artists? No. I think there were two female board artists when I started. Rest of them men. Had to swear with the best/worst of them (dudes) to fit it. Had to accept the playboy, Hustler spreads all over the walls until I just ripped one down if they were too out there. There were lots of pranks that were hilarious but I'd give a smack to any that got too friendly. It was not uncommon to set stinking shoes on fire in the hallway. The compliments were, 'You draw pretty well - for a girl." So what's my point? Nothing. I have nothing to say to you other than great job on your video and especially your reaching out to students and sharing your talent, experience, and the fact that you can learn so much online. End those 100,000 plus student loans now. Fuck.

I literally just started sketching out some random storyboards this morning out of boredom, so this video must’ve been some amazing synchronicity from the universe, haha. Aside from being a comic artist and voice actor, I know I wanna get my foot in the door of the entertainment industry by being a storyboard artist. For the comic I want to create, it’s my dream to one day see its world living and breathing through an animated adaptation. So naturally I want to become a director as well, but I find it hard to envision. Like, do you just “level up” in a sense after doing phenomenal work as a storyboard artist and then someone higher up at the studio basically says “Do whatever you want now, tell your story, go nuts”? Or is it more like you become a director, start making more and more connections through your work, and somehow invest in a studio of your own and have others work with you to tell your stories? I’d imagine the latter is slightly more realistic, but I know I’m gonna do whatever it takes. But I’d appreciate some input from you if you have any Michelle. Sorry if I went on a bit of a tangent. I’m 18 but I stress over the future like there’s no tomorrow.😅

I'm thinking of becoming a character designer, an illustrator, or a writer. But when I think about where I might be needed (moving), it genuinely freaks me out. or what I might useful for (for example, in films, shows, or video games but I like them all.) I'm still pretty young but it's kinda overwhelming since I'm in my 2nd year of HS and I have told to pick colleges or something like that. Sorry if I'm not making much sense rn.
@yeahgirl112 жыл бұрын
Do not go to college. Unless you're dead set on entering a STEM field/healthcare career, DO NOT WASTE TIME AND MONEY ON COLLEGE. Take it from someone 20 years older than you: you have PLENTY of time to go to college if you finally find yourself mature enough to take responsibility for the debt, as well as actually giving a shit about school and your life. Either look into technical schools (some do actually offer things like storyboarding or things similar to that, so look into it) and/or work for a few years to gain life experience and maturity. There is absolutely no rush to go to college, and many trades do in fact pay 10x more AT ENTRY LEVEL than a majority of college degrees. And I do mean in the $100,000's, depending on which one you train for (but most do pay around $70-80k TO START). Talk to people who've went to a technical school. They will definitely tell you that they don't regret going. You'll have basically no debt (in fact, many states pay for your schooling) and have a highly in demand skill set. Don't take my word for it, ask around and do your research.
@sunnyiesideup7115 Жыл бұрын
I know this is 2 years old, but I still have a some advice ! Either wait for college, or go to a cheap community college. Take multiple classes on things that might interest you, switch majors if you feel it’s not right, etc! It’s a really good way to not only build up a multitude of skills but also figure out your passion! Plus it’s way cheaper. Community colleges rock! But no pressure either way, because there’s nothing wrong with taking gap years to figure yourself out!!! Do whatever feels right for you, no one knows you better than yourself ! There’s no right or wrong way to do anything :]

i think im going to end up watching a lot of your videos! i'm only 17 currently, but ive been interested in having a career in the animation industry for a while now. i realized storyboarding may be the best for me, as i tend to have trouble finishing art or focusing on one thing for too long, and i love dramatic shots and scenes, and communicating through visuals instead of words. i also think i will improve my anatomy quickly by doing many small sketches in a short amount of time instead of putting all my time into one drawing. my family is poor so part of me wants to start working as quickly as possible, or at least start my post-secondary education. however, im apprehensive about going to a college. ive been considering alternative options, but hearing you talk about how your experience actually helped you and gave you the opportunity to experiment with several things, im realizing that im only anxious about taking classes that i wont enjoy. overall, you being here to teach things that otherwise are hard to learn about is going to be really helpful to me, especially since it seems like our circumstances are very similar, if that makes sense

Do you have any advice for how to get your first job (storyboard, character design, etc.) if you have no professional experience and therefore no credibility? Even entry level jobs require at least two to three years of experience, even for smaller companies :( Of course, you can still apply, but unless your work is something like they've never seen before, they could easily go with someone who had credits to their name.
@mewTripled3 жыл бұрын
yeah totally understandable. having some experience in the field even if it's not storyboard specifically is helpful at least to get to know people. Keep updating your storyboard portfolio as well if you find the work in there currently doesn't bring anything to you. Other ways that help are joining online storyboarding workshops or classes to help you network with others and your teacher may potentially have knowledge or connections to help you too!

When storyboarding in animation, would you say it's more common to be hired in as a freelancer for certain projects, or to be employed at the studio? Hope my question makes sense! :)
@mewTripled3 жыл бұрын
it definitely is a possibility but most of the time storyboarders are employed (from my experience). There are still freelanced board artists, but most productions i know of have a storyboard team. So if you want the flexibility of freelancing that is still available too!

It depends where you live! In Montreal for instance, most storyboard artists work on a contractual basis because the animation studios are smaller, so they may not have back-to-back projects to keep their board artists employed constantly. Hi Sara, I believe for international students, it's required to get a degree to be able to work in the industry in the US. At the same time, I don't believe that you need to go to an expensive art school just for that, any school that can provide you classes related to that will do. There are also places like Concept Design Academy and Brainstorm which now have online classes too which will allow you to connect with people in the industry while also learning from them. Keeping an online platform helps with helping you get discovered. I hope that helps on some level, and good luck with everything! ✨

As a 3D artist this whole time, I haven't needed a cintiq or other drawing tablets and software yet professionally. I still have an intuos from 2014 but never got used to the detached drawing aspect of the screenless tablet. I'd like to get back into digital drawing and I'm curious what your suggested essentials might be for hardware and software in the studios. I'm going to continue exploring your videos for more insights.

Please tell us in detail what the storyboard artist should do well in the pictorial part (ex) human body drawing, croquis, drawing, background drawing with perspective, etc.) 2. What is the first thing you need to do to become a storyboard artist, a beginner who knows how to draw a little and doesn't know anything on the storyboard? 3. What is the perspective of the storyboard artist? 4. Would it help to become a storyboard artist by looking at a movie storyboard book (ex. a movie parasite storyboard book) and drawing along one by one?

I just got accepted into SCAD in their elearning program. I’m majoring in sequential art but eventually want to work myself in storyboarding. They only off animation for elearning ppl as a masters degree and I’m not sure if it’s worth it? Am I on the right track with sequential art?

Which SCAD are you going to Atlanta, Savanna, or somewhere else. I want to go to SCAD when I graduate but I have trouble choosing between Atlanta and Savanna.
