What is a tent footprint?

A good footprint has grommets and it will fit the pole with the main tent and fly. So all three will be together. The footprint is suppose to be cut the same size for the grommets to line up. It is cut the shape of the tent bottom.

You can only use a foot print if it's dry when pitching. Tottaly agree if not they trap water it's common sense if you was to lay a foot print in rainy conditions then your tent on the top of it you are asking for trouble especially on cheaper tents.

Right?! I was hoping he'd place a tent on the footprint. I am mostly interested in seeing how well the tent fits over it.
