I would like to add this can be spiritual (come from spiritual beliefs and stuff) or physcological (where it can be caused by trauma and they find relating to an animal in this way helps them cope although this is just one example). First of all, therianthropy is NOT a connection to animals, having an animal spirit, or having a past life as an animal. Being a therian means you experience involuntary animalistic behavior that leads to (I hate saying this but it’s true) identifying as an animal. I don’t mean to be blunt, but if you don’t experience INVOLUNTARY urges, behaviors, etc, you aren’t a therian. Just because you think you were an animal in your past life or you feel connected to an animal doesn’t mean you’re a therian. Also, if you started experiencing these things mildly after you discovered therians, you probably arent a therian and your brain is tricking you because it wants to believe you’re one. Secondly, nobody seems to know what shifting is. Shifting is when a therian suddenly feels more in touch with their theriotype in one way or another. This could be a phantom shift (when you feel a limb of your theriotype that is not there,) a mental shift (where your mental state shifts to that of your theriotype and yiu have little control of your actions,) or another type of shift as there are many types. Shifting is NOT when you turn into an animal or remember something from your “past life”. This one is controversial, but I’m gonnna say it: Not everyone’s gonna be killed by hunters or chased off a cliff by dogs, ok? You’re free to believe what you want, but not all cats are chased down by dogs and brutally murdered in the forest, and not all arctic foxes are shot by vicious hunters. Just sayin. Not discouraging anyone. I’m sorry for being mean or crushing some of your dreams, but half of you in this comment section that I see probably aren’t therians. Sorry.

What is a therian? A therian is a person who experiences involuntary animalistic behaviours that is theres from birth or develops as you grow up or is caused through trauma. While some therians do quadrobics and wear masks and tails myslef included that is not what makes you a therian. It is only a way of expressing it. Some therians have past live or experience mental or phantom shifts i personally dont again this doesnt make you a therian. What is a mental shift? A mental shift is where a therians mind starts thinking and acting more like an animal What is a phantom shift? A phantom shift is where a therian may feel ears, claws, wings, whiskers, fur, a tail, etc. What is a theriotype? A theriotype is an animal that a therian identifys with based on shifts or personality experiences etc. My theriotype is a ginger tabby cat. A polytherian is someone with multiple theriotypes Remember it takes months of reasurch to find out if your a therian and studying your own experiences and you probably wont get it right the first time. You can never do enough reasurch. Its an identity you will have forever.

So question for all the adult therians out there, and this is a serious question, what is the difference between a therian and someone who is into petplay? I mean for a lot of people who are into petplay it isn't just a sexual thing. So is it like therians are into petplay but not everybody who's into petplay are therians?

As an adult therian, petplay and therianthropy are *completely seperate* communities. Petplay: A form of roleplay where at least one participant plays the part of a non-human animal and it's linked to D/s, BDSM, and power exchange relationships. It's a kink that can be sfw or nsfw. There are various roles in petplay including: Handler Owner Trainer The Pet (which could be a submissive or alpha pet depending on the dynamic or D/s relationship involved) It's a choice to take part in. I've heard some therians particpate in it *(I don't),* but it's not talked about because there's *a lot* of minors in the therian community. Therianthrope: Someone who believes/feels that they're a non-human animal in a non-biological sense. They identify as a non-human animal on a psychological/spiritual level that they feel they are or should be. It's not a choice being one and all are aware that they're physically/biologically human. Many experience shifts (feeling more animal than human in some way that's not physical. Whether by mindset or feeling a phantom limb, etc.) and/or species dysphoria (feeling upset that they're human and not an animal/feeling that being in a human body feels wrong), but they aren't required to be a therian, as it's an identity and not all experience that. Many therians have theories for why their therianthropy happens and is often categorized as spiritual and/or psychological. These belief are, but not limited to: Spiritual --- Past life, Misplaced Soul, Dual Soul, etc. Psychological --- Imprinting, Trauma, Neurodivergence, etc. I hope this helps! :)

I live with 8 sled dogs and I’ve never been able to move grief without howling. I prefer to be with dogs over people. I communicate with them more freely than I do humans. I have a mental connection with our pack. I am in no way a Therian because I am a mentally stable adult woman. I understand that I am gifted with the talent of animal communication. I sense Therians are young people without a based adult in their life. If you feel like a Therian, ask yourself how you can deepen your relationship with that animal. Are you a selfish person who will spend their time and resources on pretending to be an animal or will you use your position as a human to care and advocate for the animals you so admire?

The emotions you feel are human, and completely normal. I madly wanted to be a dog or cat as a kid, running on all fours with my butt way too high up in the air. Its all about escapism.
