I used to build sound to light units using triacs. The lights flashed with the music beat like in a disco. Very popular in the 70’s.

I had forgotten about TRIACS. I could remember about the trigger current to turn them on. I forgot how to turn them off by taking away trigger current to turn them off at the next current zero. Thanks. Good graphics.

Howdy again. I my teens I built a light organ using triacs. Three triacs for three output sockets, bass, medium and treble. It worked after some improvements. The problem with the original circuit was ghost triggering. When the bass channel was triggered the other channels got ghost triggered as well. The likely reason was that spikes propagated all over the circuitry. And the reason for that was probably the mains CLC filter blocking the spikes from going backwards to the grid. Clearly the gate is highly sensitive. I reduced the resistor values to 1/10 of the schematic values and increased the capacitors to 10 times in the phase shifting trigger circuits. Also I connected a 1 k resistor between the gate and MT1 to short out any ghost pulses. Ghost triggering will also happen if the voltage over MT1 and MT2 rises too fast. = du/dt is too large. This may be managed by connecting a plastic capacitor over MT2 to MT2. Try 100 nF first. Increase value until ghost triggering goes away. Or decrease value until ghost triggering comes back. Regards again.

Howdy. Just a comment that may be of interest. One can trigger a triac either with a positive pulse on the gate with reference to A1 (cathode) or by a negative pulse. The triggering needs not be of the same polarity as is the A2 (anode). Seldom told. But I have established by testing. Regards.

Howdy. Nice. I did some testing a long time ago to see if I can trigger the triac both with positive and negative gate potential to MT1. It worked. The polarity on the gate needs not be the same as on the MT2 to trigger. Regards.

The AC circuit in the video thumbnail might destroy your triac .... the load ( a lamp here ) should be connected between top ( line or live ) and the MT2 ( NOT on MT1 side , which connects direct to mains neutral ! ) the push button and resistor ( usually about 330 Ω ) connects between the GATE and MT2 .. NEVER , NEVER connect to line side of lamp ( BIG BANG , dead triac ! ) ...when the triac turns ON the voltage at MT2 drops to a very small value , thus not overloading the push button / resistor / or GATE ... you can even use a tiny reed switch to turn on hundreds of amps load ( use a BIG triac ! ) .... ( tried - n - tested ) ........... DAVE™ .............

If yes diode will burn. So what I did the stripe I connect to the ac secondary of transformer and the diode is Okey. Please explain. Thank you

2:46 - I never understood the safety and theory that the negative terminal of the battery could be connected directly to the AC main line. Can you explain how this is possible, is it safe? Thanks
@Mikomanus Жыл бұрын
well the AC cannot go through the gate of the triac so the battery is connected to the AC by only the negative terminal. So the AC has no path to go to the battery. Thats why it won't toast the battery. But if you touch the negative terminal of the battery and you are not properly isolated from the floor (ground) it will kick you. Thats why you should always use optocouplers. Also if the AC voltage will go above maximum rating of the triac (500-800V) it can break through the gate and then it will blow up the battery. This can happen with inductive loads. Optocouplers have isolation several kV so it is much more safe.

Wouldn't DC on the trigger in an AC circuit just make it conduct for half the cycle?

I'm assuming because the DC is constantly shorting the parallel thyristor it allows the current flow.

@extrims70 Жыл бұрын
Without voltage over 3-5 Volts applied to the Gate triac shouldn't been open in any direction. Your part is highly likely damaged :-( Of course, you shoudn't apply to triac terminals overrated voltage - it do break part forever also.

not needed in those circuits. function of a diac is to block current from a variably-charged capacitor until it reaches a set level. Optocoupler circuit shown is not a dimmer, just shows on and off. It works fine w/ just an optocoupler.

*Bro please u can describe in a vedio* *Why we connect resisstor at the base of transistors and how do we calculate the base resistor 😯😯😯*
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 Жыл бұрын
The purpose of the resistor is to limit gate current. Select your resistor based on the gate current specification from your triac datasheet and the system voltage. R=E/I, right?
@jimvodraska6900 Жыл бұрын
In a transistor, there are limits to the Base current to turn them on or off. The minimum current will turn them ON, but may not drive them to saturation ( EC current for minimum Vce.) But more than the minimum current will create excess heat. Above the max. Ib (base current) the transistor can be damaged or destroyed by heat from power dissipation. Similarly, Gate current for a Thyristor ( SCR) has limits.
@ANACONDA_20005 ай бұрын
i doubt in this connections
@โนรีคอกเบิร์น11 ай бұрын
Saying thyristers are for dc is bonkers. If you turn it on, then with dc it will remain on even if you remove or gnd the gate. Thyristers have a hold on current. When used on ac a thyrister will only conduct on the positive half cycle but ot Will turn off each time the sin wave is almost 0v.
@lukec5839710 ай бұрын
What determines if this is used instead of a potentiometer? Seems like they both have the same purpose but the triac would consumer more power if it requires an additional power source.
@vylbird801410 ай бұрын
A lot less power. Triacs are used for 'phase chopping' - turning on mid-way through the cycle, allowing for a simple but effective form of PWM power control. It's way more efficient than a potentiometer, which just adds resistance and wastes a ton of power as heat. Downside is you get nasty harmonics, so EMI issues - even a household dimmer switch can emit enough radio noise to hear on an AM radio.
