Yes the medical examiners and pathologists clean the body cavity out pretty well. Our work is more involved than what the general public will ever know. Educators like you do a very good job of informing the general public of just how professional embalmers and morticians are to society. Perhaps because of you we'll be appreciated much better because of all we do to try to make one's deceased loved ones look as natural and presentable as we possibly can! Thanks Kari!

Hi Kari really enjoyed how you explained about the bags. I'm not sure I would like to see it in a clear bag, but I suppose at the end of the day it does not matter the colour. Hope you are well Kari, hope you have a lovely day. Lot's of love from Nancy in Scotland x

One mortician, who does green burials, says that when she receives a body that has been autopsied, she will empty the viscera bag. She will carefully place all organs in the body cavity before sewing the body closed and wrapping it in a burial shroud.

I have a good friend that is a mortician. He says in the industry they call this shake and bake. This is because they used a granulated form of embalming product to coat the organs in the bag to dry them out.

I actually witnessed several autopsies about 25 years ago. I was shocked at how they took out all of the organs, put them all back in a garbage bag, and then dropped them right back into the deceased's abdomen. But it's not like a jig saw puzzle where everything can go back in it's place.

I was working for a FD Service in Michigan in the early 80's, and was sent to a hospital to remove a man who died in prison. He was autopsied. Then my life got complicated that evening. The viscera bag was in the sink. The head and torso were open.....I was a Paramedic, so this didn't freak me out, it just pissed me off......I packaged, wrapped, wrestled the arms, and found myself pretty satisfied that I did a good job. I delivered quite late, and the Funeral Director was also very upset at the hospital......

I worked a funeral home and the embalmer would remove the organs from the visera bag and put them in a bucket of cavity fluid soaking for awhile. Then he dusted them up with cavity powder. He them stuffed them along with the brain in the cavity that was dusted with cavity powder. What a tight fit that was. It bulged out at the tummy because of the brain. But with the clothes on and the arms folded you wouldn't notice it.

Hi Kari. Are you required to conduct an inventory of the organs?, do you have to make sure every organ is inside that bag?, does the family receives a receipt or something stating whether the body arrived complete, or not ? Do you have to let the family know if organs were missing?.. Awesome videos!

no you don't. thats the pathologist jobs. once they;ve done it, cut through them, looked at them and once its in the bag thats it. the family doesn't know about the organs, only that an autopsy has been taken place. The only thing you conduct an inventory of is what is on the deaceased, from clothes, mod pads, jewellery etc. I work in a funeral home as a funeral service operative in the UK.

That viscera bag reminds me of the Alfred Hitchcock episode called "The Jar" where there is a large clear jar full of weird looking things and one of them ends up being a girl's head. The guy's neighbors all gather to look at the jar and try to figure out what's in there.

Okay,...so all the moveable organs and ...stuff is in this bag. Which I wish you would have shown one for reference. So, why or what rather is left inside to be embalm? Aren’t you really just cleansing the inside of the cavity body? So why the trocar? What’s with the white bottle attached to the hose? Sorry for being graphic.

As a medicine student I found so horrible and creepy and unrespectful when they threw the brain into the abdomen at the end of the authopsy (without any viscera bag). I thought that it was a stuff to make students scared...surely it is a unforgettable wiew in my mind forever!

I know they sometimes need to do autopsies to find cause of death but I'd really rather that not be done to my body or my loved ones. I actually prefer a natural burial without embalming and be put in a casket without a seal (maybe even just a pine box). A friend's father was Jewish and while I don't know all the steps to his burial, I do know he had to be placed in a handmade pine casket. I believe he was of a very old-school Jewish religion. Can you discuss the different procedures for different faiths and maybe special requests you've gotten from families in a video one day?

Yes! I'm having a green burial myself!🌱 I find it very comforting to become part of the earth🌎, rather than something nasty sealed in a casket. 🤢Once I found out, that the effects of the formaldehyde wear off, and decomp sets back in, 😱 I changed my mind about a standard burial!🤔 As a avid gardener, I understand the whole cycle of life, when it comes to composting! 👩‍🌾💖🌹💖
