This is a topic that is so rarely discussed when it comes to "high performance" construction. I tip my hat to the homeowners for taking on this endeavor!

Does that high, massive blank wall going up to the ridge enclose an attic bonus room? If so, why not put a window on that wall? If it's just empty attic space, why not turn the garage roof 90 degrees and make it a much lower shed roof and bring the left house gable down to match the right side? That would be a lot cheaper to build as well.
