Best 3 1/2 minutes I've spent today. My NEW favorite quote of Dr. Mate's is "how can people BE WITH THEIR PAIN, and live with it? Only if they sense some compassion, from somebody." Go and be somebody's face of compassion TODAY.

This was my favorite video because he knows that's addiction is used to escape pain, and that addicts need compassion in order to recover. I love what he said about ,don't try and escape your pain, be with it because to to escape from pain is what causes more pain, That's the reality of addiction.

This video has inspired me to get over my addiction of ice cubes. And yeah, my addiction isn't exactly life threatening or supremely dangerous, so I'm thankful for that. But it is still harmful. It has damaged my teeth so much. It's harming my health. And, above all, just the fact that I'm addicted to something for so many years does not sit well with me. And before anyone says that it's caused by vitamin, zinc or iron deficiency, think again. This might be true in some cases, but in my case, I've tried everything from supplements to subliminals to help my case, but nothing has helped. So, I am going to get over my addiction. I'm going to overcome it now that I know what addiction is and what's the cure. Thank you Dr. Gabor Mate!

What the Tibetan saying really means is that we must relive our pain to gain control. To conquer our pain we must first fully immerse ourselves in the thoughts that give us pain. This feeling changes the whole electrochemical relationship between every cell in our body. To conquer the pain (and addiction) fully this state of pain, doubt, incompetence etc must be achieved and then completely altered through bringing a feeling of strength and belief in ones future. This changes the electrochemical messages throughout the body once again. Once done (may take multiple times) you will find it is impossible to get back into the negative feeling because the electrochemical path that your body was generating leading to the feeling and behavior has been altered and does not make sense anymore. The key to this is completely allowing yourself to feel every negative emotion at once, then refocusing until it is completely different. You will notice a change in heart rate, breathing, and may experience the feeling of vibration.

this is hands down one of the most important messages i have ever heard; i grew up in a household where in order to survive i had to develop compassion and empathy beyond my age, which i always felt was important but this video explained so well as to why; it also reassured me that it was so hard to see the truth about my own life because i never had a close enough friend i wanted to trust with my pain, let alone any compassion for myself; when you take it out of your life it's like you're only living with a brain and no heart. compassion begins when you connect your reason with your heart. thank you Gabor

Great video. As someone in the early stages of fighting a porn addiction, I too have come to realise the importance of understanding the root causes of your addiction, which is definitely a means of escapism. It is really interesting to see you pin down this escapism on the relief from pain, in whatever form that may come (physical, emotional etc). I'm still trying to work out what my pain is, and am getting professional help to uncover this.

I definitely recognize this in my own life. Working on what's causing the pain (not running away from hell, but be with it) slowly decreases all kinds of addictive behaviour in my life. What I would also like to add is that, in my experience, every time you indulge in an addiction, this is causing more trauma and therefore more pain. Even with so called 'less harmless' addictions as working or checking your e-mail or phone. Hard loop to break. Beautiful that it's done with compassion. It can be given by others, but also by yourself. Thank you for making and sharing this video.

All substances of abuse (addictions) are pain killers. Addiction is the attempt to soothe or to kill pain - and to feel alive. The paradox that’s happening here is that, in the attempt to live, the addicted die. This is awful, but I understand. I didn’t see this clearly before but it makes total sense. So sad. I feel so much compassion. Physical pain and emotional pain are experienced in the same part of the brain! Emotional rejection, for example, is experienced similarly to being stabbed! The root of addiction is emotional - loss or trauma. Addictions are all attempts to get away from emotional distress. Addiction isn’t a choice, a volitional act of the will. Nor is it a result of genetics. It is an attempt to escape the pain of life. What’s the solution or at least part of it? Don’t try to escape pain. The attempt to avert or to escape pain actually creates more pain. The attempt to escape pain leads to addiction which leads to pain which leads to addiction and on and on in a vicious vortex it goes. The other part of the solution equation is, surprise surprize, compassion. “… only when compassion is present will people allow themselves to see the truth!”. Compassion is like a runaway lane on a highway, an alternate route, for a vehicle without brakes and certain to crash. Compassion embraces the addicted and provides vital support to stop the pain run. Notice, compassion isn’t judgement or abandonment or well wishing (“Hey, you got this!). Compassion is a firm declaration, an infusion of the support of another (“Hey, I got you!”) that assists the addicted to turn around - to square off with pain. Relief isn’t instant however. Addiction (pain) cannot be effectively dealt with through distraction. Once again, reality sovereignly dictates that there isn’t a quick fix - even in a society of “fast”. In summary, addiction is the manifestation of emotional pain and requires the infusion of the compassionate support of another in order to deal with it effectively instead of vainly attempting to escape.

My family will never understand this. They are much to shallow. Addiction is far more deep than a choice.
@deniseward00211 жыл бұрын
Life is a constant experiment. Nobody really knows that what they are doing will yield something extraordinary or what their pain may lead to. Sometimes to great things! One of the most important tenets is - what we concentrate on grows. That is not to suggest we must never concentrate on pain. No, not at all. But we often neglect to concentrate on our strengths and inner resources, on the beauty we each encapsulate and that is our birthright and we concentrate too often on our "blockages". My view is we ought to recognize our capacities constantly so that we find ways that they will grow, and link with others in the human family. It's no wonder people lapse into addiction to cope with the ugly, cruel world they have come into. But the world is only ugly and cruel because we make it that way. We have enabled the ugly and cruel instead of the beautiful and the pleasurable. What if we refused to accept anything that was not beautiful to us or that was not enjoyable? People think that's unrealistic but how do they know? When have we tried? We often act like chickens running around scared of the big bad rooster. Roosters are full of bravado. Try something different! Just go "boo" and see what happens. The roosters are not getting the proper feedback so they continue to peck. A rooster is anyone who tries to tell you how to live, who makes rules for you to follow. These rules have not averted chaos. Quite the contrary, the rule makers perpetrate chaos. Until we know with our every fiber that nobody is superior or inferior to us and that every living thing has as much right to live as we do, ugliness and cruelty will be the order of the day. Fortunately at every given moment, we have a choice and the choices are unlimited. We just have to have the creativity and the boldness to try something we've never tried before.

+Gideon Waxfarb emotional numbing can be a way that the body and the mind cope with trauma and distress. People who experience emotional numbing can feel very distressed by the experience of feeling numbed and sometimes people self harm, get into emotionally intense situations or use substances as a way of trying to escape the numbness. Hope that helps x

I'm addicted to psychedelics. LSD, shrooms, and DMT. How do psychedelics help me block my pain? Or is it more of an I don't like myself and want to escape using psychedelics type of thing? I know it is an addiction because when I try to stop using psychedelics, I get an intense craving for them and start using them? I usually use an insanely high does when I use them. At least 15g of shroom, 1mg or more of LSD, and at least 100mg of DMT. I don't know what I am trying to do, or why I am craving them. Right now I want to do a thumbprint, 10mg or more of LSD, but I keep talking myself out of it; I know I'll eventually cave in and do it. How does one stop a psychedelics addiction, since psychedelics are supposed to break addictive behavior not make people crave to keep using them? I need some help. I'm hoping someone on KZbin can help me figure out why I am going down the path I am going down, and how I can turn my life around.

Do you use Reddit by any chance? If so, post something more in depth on Psychonaut subreddit and ask for help. Better than that, seek professional help. What you are doing is dangerous. My channel contains two videos about Psychedelics that are pretty positive about them. So some may consider me personally as an advocate for Psychedelics. But I haven't done any Psychedelics in over 2 years now. Not even weed! I treat these substances as powerful tools and I do not advocate the recreational use of them. I also don't feel that I'm qualified enough to give you any direction. Please go to a professional, or ask a community like the Psychonaut community on Reddit for help.
@wakkowarner88108 жыл бұрын
Omega Point Thanks for the info. I just signed up to Reddit and asked. I hope they can help me. I tried asking doctors near me, most are clueless and told me psychedelics are non-addictive. If that's so why do I crave them so strongly. Hopefully the Reddit people will know the answer to that question, my doctor didn't.

Good for you for sticking to your gut feeling. Some classic MD's don't have a clue as to the psychological/human aspect of situations, unfortunately. Who knows, they may be workaholics themselves? ask yourself why you prefer fantasy to reality. then , repair your perception of reality so that it becomes that which it can be, i.e., rewarding. your relationship with reality can become exciting when obsession isn't a negative but healthy, i.e., when the aha-moment is honored and celebrated. I call myself an aha-addict.
@larrybarry57328 жыл бұрын
Like any other addiction one stops when they find more value in abstinance , and pursue that as feverishly as they did their addiction. As agents of free will, we find what we seek, by employing psychotropics you were most likely seeking an escape from reality. Learn to accept what is, that we can not change what was, and our view of the here and now predicates our future. Life is a matter of perception, and when we stop appreciating what is and seek the negative things in life, our perception becomes very negative. Find the beauty in yourself, your environment, in this amazing gift of life, and than you will seek beauty and not try and escape it. Best wishes.

It was an escape. It was a relief ( at the moment ). Yes I agree quit sweeping issues and past pain under the rug. Deal with things. I don't think there is one person on this earth said to themselves when I grow up I want to be a junkie or a crackhead or an alcoholic. It's life circumstances. A person can only take so much and their going to need and want an escape. Especially If you grew up in a dysfunctional home. In a dysfunctional home your not learning or receiving any needed tools you need for life. When you grow up in a dysfunctional family your hypervidulant and trying to stay safe. Your waiting for the next dirty look or screaming match. It's so sad that some people get the short end of the stick and it takes a lot of mistakes and hard lessons learned to see the light. All's we ever wanted as children was to be accepted and loved!

This man is selfless. He truly cares about people. I love listening to his videos and I am reading a book he wrote on my kindle app. ♡♡♡
