I think GE is seriously looking at a GE9X variant specifically tailored for the A350-1000 in a future NEO version.
@artrandy3 ай бұрын
I imagine GE are "seriously looking" on in envy at the success of the A350, whilst the B777X programme is continually suffering delay after delay to certification, and has its own technical issues. The latest being about the integrity of the engine pylons. Oh, how GE must be regretting that they upset Airbus & refused to engine the A350-1000 at the start of this project, which gave RR an open door, cemented an exclusive contract between Airbus on the 350 with RR until 2030, and with technical developments being derived from the UltraFan testbed, RR are now upgrading the XWBs. By the time Airbus feel they need to Neo the A350, I suspect that the GE9X will be very old technology. Besides, what's in it for Airbus, to go to the expense of funding an engine option on an aircraft which is already sold out until the 2030s? The A350 clearly doesn't need GE to be a success, its only American airlines that demand to have US engines (though I tip my hat to the people at Delta), and if every legacy carrier in the US would order it with GE engines, Airbus couldn't possibly supply it. So there is no incentive for Airbus to upset RR, for nothing, when its RR that are delivering the goods. GE made their bed, and it was with Boeing, and now all the company's w/b aspirations are stuck with that of Boeing. Tough. Too bad.........

I'm not sure airbus needs to fear a narrow niche of 777. But I would like to see a plane done in pure carbon fiber, in a more aerodynamic shape a bit like Celera and Piaggio such that its compound curves makes just a carbon fiber shell rigid enough. So it has no frames or stringers, as light as can be. In A320 size and 2mm thick CF it could hold 10 bar pressure and weight only 1.6 ton for the entire fuselage. Similar for wings and some for floors etc, it could be around 4ton before engines. A lighter plane needs smaller engines so I would place them at the back like a private jet or Embraer ERJ. Better aero and rear engines could be much quieter cabin. It also means it can have shorter gear which is lighter and simpler. Then take it up to 50000 feet or higher where the air is thin and let it soar. I think you could pull off maybe 40% reduction in fuel consumption which would be pretty huge. If it's also quick and inexpensive to manufacture then it will be very hard to beat. And despite reputation, carbon fiber is actually quite inexpensive. It easily pays for itself. I estimate that an A320 size plane would use 150k$ worth of brand name carbon fiber and that's just insignificant cost. btw I would make it without windows. Digital windows on a quality OLED screen on the back of the seat. Where you can select what direction you want to look in better quality than looking out a window. It should have airless tires and spin them up with an electric motor for touchdown so it shudders less and wears less. It could also have motors to push back by itself but that's a little more risky to have motors opposing the landing direction but with careful design it could probably be safe.

Doesn´t airplanes need to have some metal In the fuselage and wings to prevent lightning strikes?
@DanFrederiksen3 ай бұрын
@@runeskogstad6927 I think they embed some metal strips here and there, apparently it's manageable. maybe even if you ignore it. many small GA planes are pure composite. Airbus A350 and B787 are mostly carbon, I haven't seen any large metal in them. I wouldn't be surprised if they just put thin metal tape along the spine before paint and that's that. But it's worth considering in the design. Carbon fiber is slightly conductive but it might explode and delaminate the hull which is an expensive repair

I think the RR ultra fan can be scaled up or down dependent on wise or narrow body styles, and there is talk of an open fan engine design as well... Interesting times ahead.. I think an a350neo would gain market traction especially as the 777X test flights have recently been suspended
@x-gamessimulator10673 ай бұрын
I don't think the Ultra Fan is a next-generation engine. It's nothing more than a Geared TurboFan Engine. The problem with the Geared TurboFan Engine is that the take-off power is reduced! During take-off, the turbine fills up, but a gearbox lowers the FAN's RPM, which reduces power!
@watcherzero52563 ай бұрын
@@x-gamessimulator1067 RR are saying the Ultrafan is about 10% more fuel efficient than the current gen and 25% more than the previous gen. They are achieving it by going large and light, larger slower rotating fan blades move more air per rotation. This would be incompatible with the 737 as it has very limited ground clearance and the you would have to scale it right down for a A320 such that a reengine probably wouldn't be worth it. But for a new generation of aircraft designed to accommodate larger engines with higher wing placement and taller landing gear it offers great potential. To reduce gearbox power loss they have removed the low pressure compressors and isolated the gearbox. So rather than a five stage process in other geared turbofans of Fan-Low Pressure compressor-High Pressure Compressor-High Pressure Turbine-Low Pressure Turbine. Instead its a three stage process of Fan-High pressure Compressor-High Pressure Turbine-Low Pressure Turbine.

If it was so revolutionary, most airplanes would have these engines! The A350 uses the RR 8X XWB trains and the A380 uses a Grearded engine!

Unless they'll make this "blended-wing" thing it's not too important for "normal"people, cause all the passenger planes look the same for me and many more ppl, It's jest a tube with wings and engines in different sizes. I, for one, can't even tell a difference between boeing or airbus, either from the outside or the inside. Sure i know, there are some differencies but none to make them distinguishable from one another in my eyes. Except i'd rather not fly on boeing for safety reasons
