What is Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR)?

The presence of alkaline silicone reaction (ASR) can have a devastating effect on your airport’s pavement performance. But what is it and how can you go about mitigating its effects and prolong the life of your airfield's concrete pavements?

Nowadays, we can prevent ASR, are 3 things needed for ASR to manifest itself on concrete. 1) High PH, 2) reactive aggregate and 3) water / moisture. As the quality aggregates are being depleted, we're left with the lower quality aggregates (in Texas we have a lot of lime stone) lime stone swells up with moisture or water, concrete being porous allows the water to come in contact with the aggregates. The solution is to create impermeable concrete, and by negating the water to have contact with the aggregate "Problem solved". Not only solve ASR, but the rebar corrosion as well.
