A cement is a binder, a substance used for construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together. Cement is seldom used on its own, but rather to bind sand and gravel (aggregate) together. Cement mixed with fine aggregate produces mortar for masonry, or with sand and gravel, produces concrete. Concrete is the most widely used material in existence and is behind only water as the planet's most-consumed resource.
Cement manufacturing is a complex process that begins with mining and then grinding raw materials that include limestone and clay, to a fine powder, called raw meal, which is then heated to a sintering temperature as high as 1450 °C in a cement kiln. In this process, the chemical bonds of the raw materials are broken down and then they are recombined into new compounds. The result is called clinker, which are rounded nodules between 1mm and 25mm across. The clinker is ground to a fine powder in a cement mill and mixed with gypsum to create cement. The powdered cement is then mixed with water and aggregates to form concrete that is used in construction.
Clinker quality depends on raw material composition, which has to be closely monitored to ensure the quality of the cement. Excess free lime, for example, results in undesirable effects such as volume expansion, increased setting time or reduced strength. Several laboratory and online systems can be employed to ensure process control in each step of the cement manufacturing process, including clinker formation.

*Weird Fact:* A guy named Charles Laleman has a patent for *"Use of blood in the cement, mortar and concrete industry for obtaining a lightened material."*
@Dubtee
@Dubtee Жыл бұрын
That specific process was suggested for creating concrete on missions off-planet. Since there will be extremely limited access to water, they suggested using urine and human blood from the very astronauts manufacturing it. Luckily for those future space-people, it's been discovered that potato starch is almost twice as effective as a binding/strengthening agent. So blood is off the table, except in an emergency situation. But let's face it, draining astronaut blood to build bricks, therefore rapidly weakening and dehydrating them, would drastically reduce their chances of survival.

Question: I get the mix that goes into making concrete. However, why can't a driver add water when they get to the construction site ?? This would end any trucks ending up with a load of solid mix in their mixer. Is this a problem ??

They can and they do but more water reduces compressive strength. It's really an amazing science but the sidewalk in front of your house doesn't have to maintain the same level of criticality as the Hoover Dam or the launch pad at Spacex. It's more than just water (slump), it's mix design and Time from batch to pour, air...etc.
@engineeringworld.

Adding water at the construction site can compromise concrete quality and strength. It's best to ensure proper mixing at the batching plant.

Rubble from buildings, which typically consists of concrete, bricks, and other construction materials, does not naturally turn back into cement. Cement is a specific binding agent that is used to make concrete by mixing it with aggregates like sand and gravel. I hope we answered your query.
