I worked at Amazon as a SDE and it was truly terrible.

We had a lot of Amazon product people join our smaller startup (~200). The culture rapidly changed from casual + friendly + effective, to CYA + optics + competition + stress from artificial deadlines. Net negative.

Competition and stress are underrated. Amazon is a place for performers. I would agree that it's not casual but that's a good thing. Amazon gets things done. I would think any startup would want a performance based culture.

I believe more people would contribute if you promise anonymity but still verify their credentials just so it isn't some pretend engineer. Imagine what truth can people say when they are anonymous.

I was in a similar state in a different company working on a framework with no documentation and something that's non transferable to different company. All I did was quit and work on some open source projects and my own startup

I saw a table with the avg turnover of engineers at big tech. Amazon was the worst, with 1.3 years. The pay may be higher than the market avg, but if you exit after 15 months, burnt out, i'm not sure about the net gain.

Of all the Bigtech cos, Amazon is the worst, has been the worst since 2011. Third class in fact. Currently, all are in bad shape. Fintech trading cos beat any Bigtech co. hands down.
