"Roll cage design was not the failure; roll cage installation was not the failure" this is the quote many of us have been waiting for. You said in the other video "we're playing a dangerous game." Unfortunately it's true, and no matter how we prepare, there are things we can't control. Building a safe car is always going to be important, for those things we can control. I'm glad you guys are putting this information out there so we can limit the risk wherever possible.

This is an amazing series! Hope you do more in the future!

Very interesting serie. Learning a lot here from Brazil. Question: what about half-cages/roll bars? I'm not into rally but I go to trackdays 4-5 times a year and now thinking more about safety. Is it a good idea for "road cars"? Does the half-cage will really protect the driver when needed? Roll etc

Thank you Ryan!

In my case guy down the street built rops and skid steers and baja stuff but I don't think he had the tooling to bend and cut I need. It's super expensive part of the process, safety and team gear is easily half the cost or more of a fresh car

For that A pillar landing, could you make up the strength of a node by adding gussets to the joint? Or does it still come out significantly weaker in a collision?

Caveat, not a roll cage builder, but I work in an area that requires knowledge of structural engineering and steel trusses. When designing with materials that are longitudinally strong (tension and compression) the goal is to form a series of triangles. If a force is applied at a node (corner) of a triangle, all members are only loaded in tension or compression, that is important, the tubes can only push or pull along their axis (oversimplification, but it works in this example). For the A-pillar, the diagonal bars will transfer their load into the vertical, away from the node, the vertical will bend and try to shear the weld of the base plate. If the tubes were aligned to meet at a single point to form a node, the stresses would be equally divided between the sill tube and the vertical and no tube would be loaded in bending. Gussets can make the area stronger, but they will never solve the issue of misaligned forces. In structural engineering a gusset plate is often used, to avoid multiple intersecting beams, while still forming a node. To my knowledge, that seems to be not permitted for roll cages (and is difficult to do with tubing anyway).

Are gusset plates allowed at the joints?
@Teamoneilrally8 ай бұрын
Ryans response: Yes, gussets are not limited, and may be added throughout however the builder see's fit. Some are mandatory, and those can be found in FIA article 253, any others can be added.
