Health & Medicine on Khan Academy: No organ quite symbolizes love like the heart. One reason may be that your heart helps you live, by moving ~5 liters (1.3 gallons) of blood through almost 100,000 kilometers (62,000 miles) of blood vessels every single minute! It has to do this all day, everyday, without ever taking a vacation! Now that is true love. Learn about how the heart works, how blood flows through the heart, where the blood goes after it leaves the heart, and what your heart is doing when it makes the sound “Lub Dub.”

I understand how it works but THE BIG BIG PROBLEM is that I really don't know why they invented this term in the first place?? what is the purpose of it?? we have Moles and other units so what info does this Unit provide that is too important to deal with it in daily bases? need to clarify
@shivangswain
@shivangswain 6 жыл бұрын
Well, the branch of electrochemistry is totally based on equivalence. From electroplating and surface adsorption to batteries and mineral refinement, everything requires both moles (ie mass) & charge of its constituents to be considered. This is why the concept of Equivalent was introduced. Nothing about this unit (or as a matter of fact any unit) is useless.

So basically, it is a value to tell us how to "reach" neutral charges in solutions? I agree with Slwan, because as a medical student I don't see the relevance of it.

simply they invented equivalence or more precisely they discovered it by experience before the establishment of stoechiometry and before the acceptance of atomic theory the first equivalence tables date back to 1777 so normality and equivalence are the original expression of concentration and not molarity and had a huge impact on the developpment of chemistry as quantitative science , but it became now obsolete

Great video! Thanks. I did chemistry at school. That's six years of basics chemistry! And we had pretty good teachers, one discovers such things later. Not all schools are equal. Fourty years later I still remember what mol is. So mEq is easy. However, not everybody has basic knowledge of chemistry. So, thanks for this video, curious people need such video's. Your explanations are very okay. Besides, one of our chemistry teachers often said mo-mo-mo-mo-molecules-yes. All these Latin words are co-co-complicated.

Ammonia is produced by the reaction: H_2(g) + N_2(g) -> NH_3. Is 12.5g of H_2 the equivalent of 25.3G of N_2? If yes or no, how do I figure it out?

Mole is the general concept as it describes the amount of any element or molecule whereas the equivalent applies to chemical reactions including redox reactions. more precisely the equivalent concepts tell us the part of a mole of one reactant that is actually needed to react with the one mole of another reactant.

we calculated number of moles of K+ ion (for example) to neutralize an oppositely charged monovalent. But how do we calculate if we were to K atoms (neutral) in place of K+ ions? Then we will need infinite moles, right?
@kashyapmangathaya4173
@kashyapmangathaya4173 6 жыл бұрын
Yash Mehan You cannot calculate the equivalent mass for an atom as such, only when it is ionised can you apply this formula.
@BabaaYaga888
@BabaaYaga888 6 жыл бұрын
Equivalency is a variable term, it changes with respect to the other element it's combining with. Here, we see only a given element combining with a monovalent mole, but there can be cases where it combined with divalent mole or even trivalent ones. Equivalency is a relative term, it is always wrt to the element it is re acting with. And reaction will only occur when we consider real charges (in ionic compounds) or at least imaginary charges (in covalent compounds). This being said, we can never consider K (neutral) atom combining and balancing electrons

what if on the other side we don't have a monovalant, the equivalent of a substance will be a variable r8? the equivalent of calcuim will not always be 2. it wud only be 2 if v hav a monovalent on the other side...

Well, Equivalent or Equivalent Weight is the number of moles of a substance required to discharge one mole of a monovalent. That is the definition.
