I wish more MMORPGs had more emphasis on the RPG side of the game, playing a role. I'm so tired of the only thing that matters being instanced raids and gear treadmills. I want to feel like I'm playing a role in the world and not just instancing for some current high tier gear all the time.

Try Final Fantasy 14, I find it really fun. After you pass the lvl 15 main quest, you can become a cook, carpenter, blacksmith, assassin, etc. I think it's what you are trying to look for?

I do not have any idea about MMORPG and how its played then and now, but since Riot Games announced that they are planning and will be making a MMORPG game in the future, i’ll be preparing myself by watching this kind of tutorial videos (Thanks to your clear explanation by the way!), and i hope i can enjoy it as much or better than i expected!

So I tried some MMORPGs after finishing the Ultra Excellent Witcher III, boy was I disappointed (to the point I've gone back to TW3 after-game roam around) >:-( Instead of a great narrative being influenced by my actions, MMORPGs seem to just be a bunch of people running around doing "missions"; but since they are just doing the same damn thing I'm going to be doing after reading the NPC dialogue, it feels like my character was taking part in some weird game show instead of an epic quest. Oh and the quests were just F'ing stupid, I need you to save the farm from bandits, - -kill 3 bandits- - (which were just standing around like lawn ornaments until you start attacking them, then the bandits start running around, you kill 3 of them and you see - - quest complete - - but the other 6 of them are still stabbing villagers, WTF ?! ). Also, the enemies just feel like button-mashing fodder, just spam the attack button until enough magic numbers show above bad guy's head and he fall down. F' that lame crap, I want to run around in a semi-circle using my bow and weaken the enemy up before switching to my sword and lunge rolling in for some melee, before I jump back and finish the enemy off with a fire spell; that's good combat, not fell asleep on keyboard holding basic attack ability 1 :-/

I agree. I can't understand how people like Guild Wars and World Of Warcraft. Boring as hell. I like single player RPGs like The Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Dark Souls, Borderlands, Fallout and the latest Assassin's Creed. I can't stand the tedium of MMOs. They feel like a chore, like doing laundry or washing dishes. Do a simple action again and again to slowly hoard XP.

RPG is generally quest based, has dungeon raids, big bosses etc... Think World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls etc... An MMO (massively mutliplayer online) can be any genre of game like MOBAs (think league of legends), battle royales (think Fortnite), FPS (Think Call of Duty) etc... this list could go on

I played a lot of MMORPGs and I admit that I found difficulty enjoying them. Other players can be very toxic, and usually, the game's world is usually unaffected by your actions. Why? Because there are other players, too, so if you kill an enemy, he will not die for good; other players need to kill him too because it's a shared space. I felt a bit... useless, when I played most such games. In regular RPGs, your actions actually count, usually, as it's also a part of the role you play.

Well to answer, it’s because fantasy is a theme among most rpgs, because of rich lore, monsters, and possibilities. The Witcher, DnD, WoW. It’s just the easier theme as a setting and has hundreds of games playtesting interesting ideas for them. It’s just simpler. Hope that answers your question!
