when i try to explain a RPG vs other games it is for me simple. With a rpg, its the character that decides how strong you are, with other games its all about your gaming skills. That is the reason why many recreative gamers love RPG, because you can go far into the game without being a hardcore gamer. Also senior gamers love RPG because of this.

That's not exactly what RPG is, also RPGs themselves can be hard, not mechanically but hard cuz you need to know how to build your character. RPG is a *roleplaying game* if you don't have tons of choices and consequences for the actions you took, that's likely not an RPG because you can't roleplay as, say pure evil guy if the game doesn't allow you to harm too many NPC's. Obviously roleplaying can be in different ways, but the point is that you have several ways to roleplay and roleplay doesn't mean picking bow playstyle over sword playstyle, it's picking between being cunning silver tongue guy, or stealthy guy, or stupid brute guy, or intelligent leader guy etc

Nope not an RPG. By that logic Borderlands games are RPGs when they don't play even remotely like RPGs. RPG is *roleplaying games* aka there has to be choices and consequences in how you deal with quests, with characters and how you can use your gameplay systems like skill checks special checks(Fallout thing but other games have similar systems and they call them attributes etc) traits to affect the world around you. No having a choice between bow or sword isn't an RPG

I’ve always been a bit confused. If an RPG’s intent is to role-play, then why can we make decisions? If you play a set role in a film, for example, you read your script as it is given, you don’t change it on the fly, or it gets re-shot. I feel a game like Uncharted makes more sense as an RPG since you play the role of Nathan Drake. However there’s no HP system, leveling, or gear collection... but simply because you follow a role, would it not be an RPG? In any sense?

N-no NO you completely misunderstood what roleplaying means. A good example of a Roleplaying game that nobody debates isn't is DnD. Look at how someone plays DnD character, they ROLEPLAY and do choices that have consequences. Now yes, depending on how you build your character you'll follow some sets of rules, but those are self imposed. Difference between Nathan Drake character in RPG and in Uncharted games is that Nathan Drake RPG guy could at any point go rogue and harm all his past allies because "Hey, villain kinda spitting fax, Ima join him" in Uncharted you DON'T have a choice, no choice no consequences not an RPG Keep in mind that RPGs like humans,are complex, nobody is 100% set in stone, you CAN play that way, but you aren't forced to

Some RPGs, like Earthbound (Mother 2), allow exploration after the story's conclusion. The same goes for Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon. In Yakuza 7, for your second question, there is a main menu like other non-RPG games.

Whilst this isn't wrong in the sense of the gaming industry we see today, a lot of the "RPG"'s aren't actually RPGs. An important part of a roleplaying game is to take the role of a character, and play out what this character would do in different situations. One of the most important things in an RPG is the freedom of choice and the consequences from it. That very choice of what you do, and how you or the story play out the consequences of the choices, is the most important aspect of RPG. That IS RPG. A book is a story you can read. However if you were that character in a book and could decide a different path in the story than just the way written, that is RPG. Being Frodo and deciding that the one ring was better used as a servant of Sauron, or rather just giving it to Boromir and let the story end that (bad) way... that freedom to change and do things different as your character would do it. That is RPG. Stats aren't important at all (but most RPG games still has stats to it as to decide the effects and results of what characters/players try to do). So, Diablo: Not an RPG (it's called action RPG, but it should be more called Action-Story). You plow through thousands of enemies with no choice of the story. Mass Effect: An RPG... even though the choices you make don't have as huge differences as any pen and paper RPG can have, it's an RPG. Dark Souls, not an RPG. It's an Action-Story. The different Telltale games: RPG's (even though the storyline continues in one way almost no matter what you do). So, the definitions of "what is an RPG" in the gaming industry is rather skewed from the original idea. But Darkskeleton is right about the definitions of what RPG is when it comes to the electronic kind of games.

@@akiradkcn And that's where the division came... You see, in Tabletop RPGs, the system with stats... is a SYSTEM. The core is to roleplay. You can make many choices, and stats are there so you can be sure if you can or can't do something. In short, to avoid situations like "Your almighty sword can't hit me, because i have an armor which can block attacks from ultimate sword". When RPGs started to appear on PC... the RPG system was the easiest thing to port. As you can't have the same variety in PC RPG as in Tabletop RPG. In tabletop RPG, when you see a trap, you can be very, very creative. Like when you see a spike trap, you can just disable it or tank it in PC RPG... but in Tabletop, you can be creative and say "I put a blanket on spikes and then used freeze spell on it and then harden spell so it won't break, and then walked on it" in PC RPG, your choices are pre-detemined, but in Tabletop, you can be very creative in a way the game master wouldnt' even think about, yet still accept it because the RPG System allowed to do it, because your stats, your spells and dice rolls allowed it to happen. TL;DR, RPG System is the same thing as Side-scrolling. As old PCs couldn't do 3D Graphics as good as nowadays, they resorted to Sideview or top down or isometric, same with RPG system.

Nope, RTS games aren't even remotely an RPG. However there's an interesting argument to be made that some strategy games(not RTS...) like Hearts of Iron can be considered a weird form of an RPG. After all, you can pick your starting role(nation) and then you can do whatever choices you want(whether to make alliances or annexing people, or if you want science victory condition or nuclear win condition) and those have consequences(nuclear Ghandi doesn't like you due to your poor diplomacy and he nukes you, something that was preventable had you chosen different choices) It's funny how strategy games aren't called RPGs even if there's an argument for it but BORDERLANDS is called an RPG just because they have skill system 😢

I just have one question: are modern RPGs just objectively trash or if RPGs have always been like that then how to have fun? This is a game genre I suppose. Like, playing Fallout was boring as hell, there was no combat, no locations, no quests... You just walk till your vault dies. In more recent game, Morrowind you... uh, Morrowind is Morrowind, come on. Plus it's something Bethesda made. I just wonder why do people call all these games interesting, maybe I'm not understanding something?

@@akiradkcn The newbie experience is simply awful. I do like having a lot of systems and have them be complex ones, but hell, the game doesn't explain anything to you. I spent 4 weeks finding out how to use enchanting and I'm yet to find how to [deleted to avoid spoilers]. The game greets you with your sword hitting an enemy once in a blue moon and finishes you off with giving you location names you've never been to or heard about yet with no way to ask about them (hello, imerial church dude on the left). Also, add to that stealth that doesn't want to work and that assassin who kill wake you up 89 out of 90 times you try to have an hour of sleep to restore mana (I believe to stop these you gotta do the DLC's quests, but I am interested in completing the main story for the first time first). Morrowind isn't player-friendly. That was what I meant by "Morrowind is Morrowind" Now why I added morrowind there is because there's no actual RP going on. Bethesda either never understood or stopped doing so in Morrowind what RP is. They believe a role-play is your occupation, your style of playing. They think "sneaky archer" is roleplay. They think "a warrior in heavy armor with an axe" is a roleplay. While in reality you don't play your weapon, you live the life of your character. Morrowind is pretty much a linear story with not much of a choice (aside from small things like messing up the cat girl in the sewers for the main quest and killing any of the lore-required NPCs). You have to be the chosen one, you have to have your fate scripted in scrolls (or whatever). Every human lives their own life, so in RPGs there shouldn't even be a "main story". I might be asking too much from an RPG (yeah, asking roleplay from a role playing game is too much) but man, the only reason we don't have it now is because "it won't sell". Also, sorry, I already forgot what the video was about. And lastly, do I think Morrowind is a bad game? I can't say yet, I've had my fun, it brought me pain and there are things I really regret doing. The graphics is rather good, if you exclude enchanted weapon glow. I'm still yet to complete the story and music is pretty good, although having, what, two tracks is definitely not enough. Morrowind is good, but as a videogame it's awful
