what is a sloyd knife? it was a concept developed over hundreds of years untill William Collins perfected it

I always thought Sloyd was the decorative wood carving, engraving technique where they out charcoal into the cuts to reveal a pattern, picture. Maybe I got it mixed up

*No, this is the real origin:* “Sloyd” comes from the Scandinavian word “Sløyd”, which comes from Old Norse _”slǿgð”,_ meaning “quickwitted/smart”. It was a term used for carpenters who worked on ships, whom at that time also carved intricate designs on them - didn’t matter what kind of tool they used. Today, the term “sløyd” is an umbrella term for general wood-/metalworking and doesn’t need to have anything to do with knives specifically - it’s a branch of study (a subject) in elementary school that everyone attends to (used to be just boys), where they make birdhouses, etc. That’s why it’s a little bit amusing to us that Americans use the word as if it is some sort of secret craft.

@@wcknives I understand, but what is the “sloyd” in “sloyd knife” referencing if not the Scandinavian origin? Surely the style of knife and its name is inspired by Scandinavia, or at least the Scandinavian field of study called “sløyd» (since you mentioned your Swedish connection)? Meanwhile, here we would simply call that a detailing knife. Or simply a whittling knife.
