Additional information / Clarification: When I say Gothi or Gythia (plural Gothar), it is the anglicized form used in modern Ásatrú to refer to a Goði, Gyðja and in plural Goðar. The terms "priests" and "priestesses" are used to refer to the Gothar so you can have a familiar term in order to understand the religious functions of these individuals, the role they played and play within the pre-Christian Scandinavian traditions, and the modern pagan reconstruction of Northern European Pagan traditions. Although being a Goði isn't quite the same thing as being a Christian priest. Unfortunately it seems in English there isn't another title to differentiate a priest from a pagan "priest", all religious terms associated with such functions refer to the same religious ideology (Cleric; Monk; Friar; Father; Padre; Clergyperson; Pastor; etc.).

@@Aethuviel Thor causing the thunder was just the way people of that time understood nature. As our knowledge of nature expanded over time so did our understanding of the Gods. Thor doesn't create thunder in the same way Loki doesn't create earthquakes. Our belief in the Gods is strong, we believe they exist however many of the myths surrounding them are meant to guide us through life by teaching us morals. It's similar to how the stories of the bible are. Believing Thor causes thunder is like believe Jesus turned water into wine by pouring it over his hand. It's symbolic, not literal, but it doesn't take away from the belief in our Gods.

Anyway, you said that Thor making lightning was symbolic and that it doesnt take away from belief in your gods. From my view, I see it this way: people once believed that Thor was real and literally caused lightning. Now we all know it isnt true. I think that, scientifically speaking, its also now obvious that Thor doesnt exist at all. If beliefs in literal happenings change into mere symbolic ideas as modern times hit the stage, it sorta shows the flawed nature of the beliefs, in my opinion. Because if Thor were a real god we would know, and he would not have tp become symbolic or change into something else to stay alive in a scientific world. And obviously we see no serpent around the globe. Its not there. Personally, I think that if you love Norse culture as I do, you can take the myths and try to pull value and meaning from them, and form religion (finding meaning in nob obvious places and using ceremonial practices) from those myths. Fair enough. But to actually claim that these gods exist in some way, to change them into other things as a means to still worship them, have relationship with them in some fashion - I find it dishonest. I want to be part of this for love of the myths and culture. But I know (in my own reality, from my own perspective) that no gods exist. What do you think about this? Again, not attacking. I just wanna learn. I wont go off trying to press you much further and if you wish I will not ask anything else.

The Caravan expeditions with nightly parties were a major contributor to the "Indo-European" shared history through archeological evidence. I enjoy having Jehovah Witnesses knock on my door. They ask if I have heard the word of god and I always correct them by saying "gods". Some leave it at that and other try to counter by telling me that there is only 1 god. When that happens, I tell them I am aware of the Christ god, and his father whom their religion is named after, and I also inform them that their gods' followers were ultimately unsuccessful in wiping the memory of my gods from memory, thanks to Snorri Sturluson. I then bid them a good day and ask them to take their gods with them. I am not sure, but I think they take that as a challenge. I seem to be getting more Seventh Day Adventists and Jehovah's Witnesses knocking than ever before. Oh well. They are free to follow their hearts just as I am.

For years they also bothered me quite a lot on a daily basis. There are more of them on the streets than anybody else. It got to the point that literally every 10 meters there they were... When they asked me about the word of god I asked them "which one?" at that point they tried their talk on me, same as you... it seems it's universal and they always come up with the same arguments. I told them 2 things. One, that they were pronouncing the name of their own god in a wrong way and that was extremely disrespectful to their god; second, I told them how their god used to come before his devotees in the temple - as a goat - and I show them where that was written in the bible. Never again was I bothered by them. But the best part was the doubt in their eyes. I could see clearly that they started to question their own faith within their minds. The lack of understanding leads people to blindly follow a deity or deities, but just one little spark of knowledge makes the difference and people experience freedom.

Odin tells us in Havamal to be kind to strangers, wanderers, and guests. When missionaries and the like come to my door, especially in the summer, I offer them water or a snack. Just because their god is not for me, is no reason to be rude. It really throws them for a loop.

For years I was never rude to them, and then they found my address because they were creepy stalkers, and found my friends and started to stalk them, always trying to impose their religion. I even tried to be friends with a kid from that religion but he was completely mental and when Christmas came along he wanted to punch every child he could find because they celebrated Christmas and he as a Jehovah Witness didn't celebrate any of that. I tried to be friends with these sort of people but enough is enough. I was never rude though, mind that, but I stopped trying to be friends with them. Every normal talk you want to have, they simply cut you down and start their mambo jambo over and over again, everything is an excuse to profess their religion. At some point it isn't worth trying.

In Scandinavia we don't say "kindred" (Never herd anyone say that); we are blotlag (Blot-teams). We say that in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Also most of us combine folktro "traditional mythology" with the Eddas, including various forces in nature. We also like to blot at old heathen burial sites and holy places.

I think you can find powerful places everywhere, the pre-christian believes are related and does not contradict each other. A holy place for the celts, or the Slavic Goods, they will accept us asatru to blot in their places. At least that is my belief.

Asatro as it is called here in Denmark is as you describe it in your video. I myself am Asatro and member of several of the small groups you speak of. And again as you told it is true enough. here in Denmark is the largest Forn Siđr. And has become a recognized religious community where we have been given a burial ground for us in the city of Odense. right now we are struggling to be allowed to be buried with a long ship. the book you are showing is good and a good start. And Hávamál is the one I personally use. a really good video and I'm sure people got a better understanding. Reading and interpreting the old texts, songs, sagas and folk tales etc. is part of it, to create one's own faith, as is the dialogue with other faiths about the same.

I was raised by an abusive Baptist for two years (the abusive part is only relevant because it gave Christianity a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak), and stayed in a strict Christian foster home for another two years. Afterwards, I was adopted and became agnostic, about 2-3 years ago. Recently, I stumbled across Ásatrú and it could not have fit my beliefs more at base value. I still have a lot more research to do and much to learn but it is a path I intend to take. I live in a Catholic household (my adoptive parents) and even after I told them I was agnostic they continue to push their religion on me. I can't imagine what they would think if they found out I was a pagan, but in the end it is irrelevant. I also have a good friend who I recently found out follows this path, and she happens to be an immigrant from Iceland. You make a good point that other people can follow this path even if they didn't originate from Nordic countries. I worry that if I tell her she will think that I am appropriating or something, especially considering I am half black. Maybe I am just overanalyzing things though. Any advice on my parents, friend, and further research?

Thank you for your message. I do not think the gods care about gender, race, traditional background, nationality etc. the gods themselves have nothing of that; they are spiritual entities free from the stigmas we humans create and impose to each other. I also do not believe in Cultural Appropriation. I believe in Cultural Appreciation, and if some are curious enough to appreciate a certain culture and even honouring the deities of that culture, I don't see why we shouldn't let them. Spirituality is free from dogmas, cannons, rules, laws, taboos etc. it's our own and we take the path we desire, the one we trully need. Many know what they want, but free trully know what they need. The aim is to achieve happiness, harmony within ourselves and to learn until we achieve great wisdom. The gods manifest themselves through nature and through ourselves, so listen to the gods within yourself, understand and learn what they are saying to you. Whatever calls to you when you sit in silence and listen, take that path if you believe it's the right one.

You're presumably also half white. Most white people in America are of Anglo-Saxon, Germanic and/or Nordic stock. All of the above splintered off at certain points in early history, but originated from the same region of Denmark. The Danes and Saxons were border countries, the Angle's and Saxons conquered most of Britain after Rome left their shores, to the point that most of England is Anglo-Saxon and not Celtic or Britannic (celtic roman mix ie welsh). They had very similar beliefs and culture to the Norse that later became the vikings. Then the vikings again from the same region of Saxony and Denmark conquered much of England and establishing Danelaw for most of the Island except the old kingdom of Wessex. When Wessex finally re established England rule, they were again conquered by invading Normans (Norse/Frankish christian converts) and the land was finally unified under a Norman ruler, William the conqueror. The point I'm getting at is you probably have a significant amount of Norse blood in your veins (most black people in America aren't 100% black, most are around 80%, where as white people are 100% in all but a few rare cases. If you took a DNA test I believe you'd find over half white in your bloodline, but even if not, half of your blood can call to you...). If you were full blood black, I'd say you have your own gods, you shouldn't worship another races gods imo, but you are at least half white. If an admittedly rare merchant from Northern Africa were to sail ALL the way to Sweden and marry a lowborn woman there, their kids would feel a pull towards the gods of their land, and half their blood more likely than the merchant's gods, thus I believe you are in similar circumstances.

I am Swedish, and I can't really see the word Asatru meaning "true" to the Aesir (Asar in Swedish), but rather "tro", which means faith or belief. Asatro - belief in the Aesir. This could be wrong, as Swedish is not mutually intelligible with old Norse, but the language is our granddaddy.

’Ásatrú’ is a modern Icelandic word. Not Old Norse. The same is true for Swedish ’asatro’ (åsatro). The Icelandic as well as the Swedish term both use the word trú/tro in the meaning (theological) ’belief/faith’ so in other words ’religion’. Old Norse didn’t use the compound ’ásatrúa/ásatróa’ to refer to the Scandinavian belief system. There the term was usually ’norrǿnn siðr’ or simply ’siðr’.

I feel like I am in a weird position... First, I belive that we are responsible for our own faith. Faith, or destiny, or causality, it's like a river. If you want to define it, you must have the strength to swim against the rivers stream. Secondly, I believe that Asatru personates a certain strength in its teachings. A strength that enables you to swim against the stream. Also a connection with the nature that surrounds us and the (true) nature within ourselves (where this strength originates). The calm of mind you feel in the deep of your heart when walking through the forest... That is something I "find" Asatru in for myself. But I also (third) recognize christianity as a part of my belief/identity. It is a part of my upbringing after all. members of my family are buried on christian graveyards, I have been introduec in the local christian-lutheran church and I often find myself thinking of/regarding the christian belife as something akin to a resolution or consolation. I firmly disagree with the christian "slave-mentality" (referring to Nietzsche's critique) but it is simply a part of who I am and of who my ancestors were. On the other hand Asatru or "the old ways" hold a special place within my heart, as they give me strength and resolution to strive after my dreams. Do I have to choose between them? Or can I (actually literally speaking), carry a Mjölnir- and Cruzifex-necklace at the same time? I dont know if this is the right place to ask this stuff; and I know, that this is most likely a question only I, myself, can answer for me, personally. But I am still interested in your opinions.

I agree, i feel that conflict also, i believe that the gods are personifications of a set of qualities that resonate in the human psyche, body, spirit and awareness. Whatever god you prefer or resenate the most with, or whatever god personifies the qualities best suited to your daily live or values is the one you ask for help or choose to pay homage to. However.. i still find myself turning to the christian ways when it comes to expressions/sayings, and i still use the christian method when i pray. Nor do i reject Christianity, it has so many redeming qualities that are often not depicted in modern media, as it tends to focus on the negative. I think whatever we believe in and put our energy into is what makes something real or not. The universe takes shape in order what our perception of it is, thus it will manifest. The rest is up to character i think..

I only began looking into (and believing in) Asatru a few months ago, so this really helped me get a grip on how to explain my beliefs to people who don’t understand. @@sffb8295 If you feel called to it, definitely answer that call. There are those of the faith who claim it is only for people of X ethnic heritage. They can believe that all they want, but there are Asatruar of many heritages. There always has been - there is a a long history of cultural exchange - for example, the Vikings didn't just raid, they also traded, and to do that you have to gain an understanding of the people with whom you're trading. Traditions flowed back and forth. As well, the Sapmi people were also long long consulted in matters of spirituality - there, again, cultural exchange from way back. Racism is based on fear - and in the case of Asatru, there is a strain of practitioners who feel otherwise threatened and want to claim the space as just theirs, not realizing that the more people do practice, the better we all - including them - will be. So. Answer the gods you are drawn to. There are a number of inclusionary heathen oranizations if you want company, or just be a solo practitioner, which is fine, too.

Even amongst the gods there is no excuse for any of that. I'd say the best example perhaps being Njord. He was a Vanir who came to be amongst the Aesir in "trade" for an Aesir who went to the Vanir. They were neither one hostage or prisoner, but instead meant to be a sign of peace and to build and maintain frith between them. Njord was brought in and became family amongst the Aesir. I'd say that is example enough that anyone who wishes to can belong as a heathen. Anyone using race or ethnicity to be exclusionary is just a trash person 🤷‍♂️ and would, in absence of religion, find some other arbitrary reason to claim they're part of some "better" group and exclude others. If someone moved that direction at all, back away quickly or if you've the fortitude and knowledge for it, call them out on their bullshit.

The more I listen to this. The more it looks like it's a way of providing discipline and order in the groep. And having more gods could be better because they are pointing too all the shapes of things, what you can not grab with your hands. Like strength of thor. The people now classified as Norse, Scandinavian had no issues with traveling to other lands, trading goods with and marrying people from other cultures, building new traditions, etc. Of course, it wasn't always done in a peaceful manner or with the consent of everyone involved, but the point is, it happened, and so this modern idea that "Everyone needs to stick to their own homeland/ethnic background because that's what our ancestors did" thing is absolute nonsense.

Good question. Asatru started off as a "wiccanization" of the Germanic traditions, so indeed a lot of actual Germanic traditions were intentionally left out, mostly the ones from the continental Old Germans, and also things that did not exist in the past were added to Asatru. Asatru is a neo-pagan religion, and is by no means the only neo-pagan branch of germanic/scandinavian pagan traditions. Tribal Heathenry, for instance, gets closer to the older aspects of the germanic pagan traditions.

Hi Arith, I wonder how much language determines the thinking here. For example, in the video you refer to Asatru as a "reconstruction" to the pre-Christian beliefs. However, I would say it is more of a "reconnection". For me, Asatru simply mean adherence to the Havamal and, by extention, the nine noble virtues. I can sympathize with being disturbed by some of the ways that your co-religionists practice. I don't call myself a practitioner of Hellenismos because the organized churches that I found tend to take a soft polytheistic approach to the gods as simply natural forces, tending to deny that they are people, and the major church in Helladas treats non ethnically Helledic people (such as myself) as a separate and valid religious group. The former I consider wrong, the latter I consider dangerous, which is why I call myself a Hesiodic ( or Hellenic) pagan.

To be honest, I'm not a follower of Ásatrú nor am I in any Kindred. There are a couple religious branches of Northern European Pagan Traditions that can't possibly be labled as Ásatrú, and spiritualities that certainly have no name nor any religious structure. I tend to get well away from religions, even if they are pagan. I won't be part of religious structures because from the moment they become religions, they already condition the spiritual freedom. When there are laws and rules and a way to behave inside a religion, those are the first chains right there.

Of course you can, but I'm not a guide, you should be your own spiritual guide. Seek what you need in spiritual terms, look inside you and ask yourself if you can or cannot be the person you wish to be. The gods speak through nature and through ourselves, you just have to listen. Listening is the first principle.

Syamalendu Adhikari I don't see anything wrong with it. I think people have a misconception. You can be jewish if you want but people with jewish ancestry might feel they have a deeper connection. That's not saying you can't but it is a little more natural for people to follow a belief that their ancestors had. Asatru followers are a pretty easy group. What we don't like is for people to come in a force their views on how our religion should be. What we know as asatru never was a conversion or missionary religion it was a way of life with small variations from various Germanic regions and tribe to tribe.

Hello there! Well, there is no such thing as 100% Germanic or 100% of any race. I have friends you just look at them and would say "these guys are total nordics", tall, white-blond, light blue eyes etc., yet in DNA tests shows great % of loads of European mixture and even African and Middle-Eastern. Also, I do not see any harm in someone who isn't from germanic or nordic origins worshipping the Norse gods. There are a lot of Europeans who worship Egyptian and Sumerian deities, and I have a lot of friends who are either African or Middle-Eastern, and even Asian, physically not Nordic/Germanic at all, and they worship the Norse Gods and other Germanic deities. Religion is one thing, Spirituality is another. Don't follow, just accept and embrace whatever calls to you.

If your mixed and it is odvious, that you’re not majority European, then I don’t think you’d feel too comfortable in to a very Folkish kindred. They tend to think you should go with the religion that is closest to your bloodline. For example, if your Native American than practice your ancestors native beliefs, etc.. if you feel drawn to Asatru but you’re not majority European or if you think that’s racist, then there are plenty of universalist Asatru groups around. Excellent as is consistent with you, noble sir 😁 I think as far as the Wiccan religion comparison is concerned, we can clearly see that both are pagan and in pan-paganism magick features across the board (no doubt in varying degrees and forms) in all, if not pretty close to all. So in essence you could say they’re the same, but this model would apply to any pagan group: we can also say that what is quite unique to both Wicca and Asatru is that they are both modern interpretations of paganism. Another division occurs in Asatru’s seemingly stronger associations to environment and ethnicity (and we’re all, and quite correctly, cautious about such factors) whilst Wicca seems less concerned with race and territory. I would however make a tentative point and argue that Wicca is more Celt based, in both practice, deities, demography and geography. Well it’s inspired me look in to Wicca more. What is norsk folketro? It's a umbrella term for forn sed (gammel norsk) galder and Seid in all forms and also deisme and three different versions of åsatro. Which our native religion as our edda school books in the prelouge written in Latin, religio naturalis. This cultural beliefs built on Seid healing and training your mind of course. I'm brought up in norsk folketro and had it school because Im not baptized and my parents asked for me to not attend because we were Norwegians with Norwegian folketro, which is what people here actually believes as long as they aren't foreigners mostly from Denmark they are the ones raping us with Christianity, we still have a Danish king. Anyways talking about åsatro without the modern history of it, it has slowly changed over very long time, it never stopped but people could lose land and home or worse if you got a church against you for being hedning. Since Norway was called vik and was north germania (Norge short for norgermania) =north germania. Our civil culture violent idiological warfare. Most of my relatives are still åsatro in the right sense, no praying to gods because they know what the gods are, and my now dead oldefar who was a nature healer Seid practisioner and elk hunter. Anyways it's impossible to understand without help of people you trust. My uncle did not learn anything because he claimed it was cheap magic tricks, my relatives have told me not mentioned it but we all talk about it during our jule-blot. Which is our second most important blot of the year... You sort of covered it but I was always under the impression that Ásatrú IS an Icelandic revival movement. Ásatrúarfélagið in 1972 as you mentioned. I am familiar with the USA Ásatrú Folk Assembly, however I suppose this becomes a point of confusion for me. As you say though this seems to revolve around the Æsir. I'm also curious as to why folks say "Germanic" vs "Norse". I mean the Germanic areas is isolated to around modern day Germany right? Iceland, Norway and Sweden would not be consider Germanic.

Arith, excellent job of this video. You are so right about the modern reconstruction of the Ásatrú. I also believe that we should study all aspects of the religion as we cannot base our beliefs if we do not study and learn about all sides to become neo-paganism. Kulning is a beautiful sounds and callings/spell(s). BTW, I started with Me. Paxton's book and I am continually going back to it as a reference. Also, may I submit this video onto a couple of FB pages that focus on the learning about Ásatrú and Odinism/ Norse religion?

Monday's insanity I’m at that stage currently. I feel like i belong and it’s what i should do, but i still have that hesitation.....so i bought a Mjölnir necklace and am starting to follow the noble virtues. Now.....the virtues arena commandments. They are a guide that you can personalize to whatever fits your own personal beliefs. Try it. I’ve seen people say you have to feel worthy of presenting mjölnir if you want to follow asatru. Meaning you have to feel confident and sure that this is what you want.

That's interesting, I have so many cultural backgrounds being from a mixed race in a very mixed country and got really into hellenic reconstructionism for a few years, even praticing it, nice knowing the asatru recognize the other gods. Funny question though, I was a fighter at some point in my life, and I have come to the point of using the things I've learned in the ring to protect people Inlove irl, that qualifies for Vallhala or I have to be a soldier and die from war?
