Considering Ash's battle style shines the most with speedy and maneuverable Pokémon, Pokémon that can keep up with spontaneous instructions and timings fast enough to react properly, that's something to possibly take into account. The battle styles of Trainers in the anime is an interesting topic.
@josephschubert6561 Жыл бұрын
Which is why, unfortunately, Turtwig's high potential fell off after evolving. While they did spend some time in the show talking about how Grotle got much slower and needed to learn a new style, but Ash wasn't qualified to teach him that. With Infernape, Staraptor, Pikachu, and Buizel being very agile Pokemon, Ash had a team that leaned heavily in the opposite direction of Torterra. Pikachu and Buizel were even able to practice the counter-spin technique together (Maybe also Infernape, I forget if it learned that). At the time, Ash just wasn't able to keep up with the necessary difference, but I think at this point if Ash spent a solid chunk of time completely focused on Torterra, he'd be vying for a spot on the best team. And that's an interesting thing about Ash. He's always been able to pull a champion out of a pathetic Pokemon. It's just a matter of how mature Ash was at the time and how much the pokemon wanted to be a champion. Paul knew that Chimchar could be a strong pokemon, but he failed at training him. Ash, with a natural inclination to helping abandoned Fire-starters, was able to channel Chimchar's potential. Which is probably part of why Torterra didn't get the full attention he needed; Ash's focus was more on Infernape during that time.

Heracross for example feels extremely out of place given its Sinnoh league battles where it had one of the coolest fights in the league and was one of Ash’s attempts to counter Darkrai specifically because of its skills from the previous battle it was in so while it lost it was used because it was a good counter to Darkrai. There's absolutely zero proof that Ash's Boldore was meant to evolve. Tauros’ win rate wasn’t great but the wins he did get were pretty important to the match at the time. Sad to see Totodile as a possibility, as it was one of the more fun pokemon to watch Ash use. In some cases this fun personality helped, like the fight with Kingdra (shown) or his ability to dance to really "throw" opponents he was latched on to with his jaws, but it did hinder the flow of his team. A lot of his teammates got confused or (slightly) hurt from Totodile's dancing or energetic tendencies. It would also be fun to see what pokemon were the most useful as teammates adventuring through each region. Which flying pokemon flew and found what Ash was searching for the most? Which helped him swim deep down or fast through water most effectively? Which could he ride to go past obstacles? Who was the best vine whipper/grabber? And also who were the WORST and more often CAUSED problems for the group of adventurers? Anything from causing squabbles to getting lost to delay the groups travels.

I thought that too, until I actually went back and watched the anime. Not true in the slightest, the only time Ash had trouble with an evolved pokemon it was because the very first battle he sent out his Charmeleon into, the proud, Fire Type charmeleon, with dragon flowing through it's blood and fresh off it's greatest victory having just solo'd 50+ executor without a problem- ... it pops out of the ball, eager to fight, willing to listen. And it's sent out to beat a Paras. A paras so exceptionally weak it's never won a single fight. Ash's orders? "Come on buddy, you can loose, go easy on it and hand it the win. I know you can loose! We're cheering for you paras!" This is the exact instant in which Charmeleon stops obeying him. He was willing to respect the kid before this, but that insult, which ash never recognized and never apologized for, was unforgivable.

I think you should have considered the special strategies that some of Ash's Pokémon processed. Like Buisel counter shield and Ice Aqua jet. Gliscor's air battle master dodge techniques that he used to defeat Paul's OP Drapion. Also, what feats did they accomplish that other pokemon didn't, like Heracross doing damage with sleep talk to Tobias's Darkrai. These made the pokemon stand out despite their poor win rates, and I really think that this should have effected their ranking in this video.
@MagillanicaLouM Жыл бұрын
Yeah thats the thing with "Ashs best/worst pokemon" videos, just looking at numbers doesnt do any of these mons justice. These are characters in a story, every win and loss of every single on of these pokemon has context behind them. For many of his current powerhouses, we gotta take into account obviously many losses come from their younger forms where they're weaker and less experienced. And many pokemon with that might lose a lot may actually be super impressive in the context of the battle. Like everyone shits on Torkoal but i remember it giving Brandons Registeel a good scrap before going down for example. Also of course the ever present factor of Ash himself and whoever the opponent is, sometimes kid just gets outplayed and a mon gets ko'd, doesn't mean the pokemon themselves are weak. An example being say, Pikachu getting caught with destiny bond and taken out early against Cynthia. Or a let's look at say, half his sinnoh team against Paul's (or his brothers i suppose) Drapion. Ash was just getting bamboozled during that portion, it wasn't on the pokemon just not being up to snuff.

There's also the order in which they are sent and how much endurance they have. As Toby said, there are just so many variables.

Hearing Muk be so sincerely considered in this pains me. It's one of the Ash mons with such potential that Ash just never tapped into. Same goes for Palpitoad and Unfezant, honestly- so much potential that they never got the chance to live up to because Ash barely friggin' used them. Like, Unfezant showed potential for battling as a Pidove, weakening Snivy for Ash to catch, but then after that, where was it used? Against those Venipede in Castelia? Against Skyla? Against Roxie? And I think that's it? And Unfezant was who he sent to Oak's in order to get Charizard back, too. Also, I don't think the Roxie battle should count too heavily against Unfezant, because Roxie was shown to just be that friggin' good. Like, she stacked things in Ash's favor as much as she could and still only just barely lost because Pikachu activated Static at the right time. Which, incidentally, is the last time Pikachu ever activated Static, I believe. But yeah- making it 6v3, not healing her team from the last Gym battle (in which her Koffing, the same Koffing that wiped the field with half of Ash's team, had just gotten through thrashing a Gothitelle!), giving Pignite a Pecha Berry just before sending out her ace, a Garbodor with Venoshock! Yeah, there is no shame in losing to Roxie, she was on another level!

8:42 - The mentions of how much more generally useful flying mon and those with actual arms are than those without is a really good point. I've often wondered about what kind of mon in general would be the best or worst to have around as a trainer on the move from gym to gym, traveling the wilderness and battling frequently. Surely one could train even non-fighting type humanoid pokemon to counter certain types of attacks with a leg sweep or over the shoulder throw, or using the 3rd dimension of space that flight enables more effectively for battling. We see clips of the infamous bellsprout tossing Ash's pokemon around like they're nothing often enough, and mr. mime, a psychic/fairy mon, has had some screen time using Tai Chi in battle as a means of dodging an actual fighting type. And when out exploring / traveling, having mon's with arms would be extra manpower for setting up a campsite. And with a flying mon one could travel much faster than by walking. Athough the technology depicted in the anime has evolved over time to roughly catch up with and in many ways surpass the real world. So now that cars, planes, and trains have become commonplace in the pokemon world, maybe traveling by foot / bike / ride pokemon is less of an issue for all but the most traditional trainers, braving the wild outdoors while on their adventures without the comforts of modern transportation and a room with a bed to sleep in every night.

From what I gather, the issue with looking at hard win rates really does just come down to how the battles were written. Certain pokemon NEED to lose a battle to make way for Pikachu, or the new star of a team. Similarly, if a Pokemon is used often (like Gliscor if i remember right) it's going to lose WAY more to allow for more varied battles.

Win rates overall muddy the waters of the argument. And purely on type also doesn't get you anywhere, if you were actually going to make a "worst team on vibes" you wouldn't even consider Heracross, for example. Not only is Heracross a legitimately strong Pokemon to use in meta with a fairly unique type and great stats and abilities, but Ash's Heracross in particular is one of his more "dark horse" Pokemon. It's like a secret Ace he brings out when the going gets tough as evidenced by him using it to 1v1 Gary's Magmar and Nando's Kricketune, and honestly, if Tobias wasn't a hack cheat character made specifically to keep Ash from winning, Sleep Talk Heracross was the most big brain counter play strategy Ash has ever used in the entire series and SHOULD have netted him the win on Darkrai but it attacked twice in one turn and OHKOd with Dream Eater. Gliscor I think has a lot of variables not mentioned. Its "battling personality" changes and matures throughout the series it's in, by the time DP ends it's on a level where it can battle Paul head on and it takes care of the MONSTER that was destroying Ash's team, his Drapion. All the training with the Air Battle Master really bumps it up in usefulness. Also, Oak's lab works more like a Pokemon Daycare than a PC Box, because we get confirmation hat Ash's Pokemon DO train at the lab, as Journeys confirms Infernape challenged and defeated all of Ash's Fire Pokemon with the exception of teasing whether or not it actually defeated Charizard (which is actually implied, but Charizard is too much of a biased mascot whore for TPC to make look too weak). Regardless, that means Ash's 30 Tauros with a full field to run in and exercise constantly and graze and get treated by professional Pokemon researchers and breeders must actually be fit enough to be battle ready for if Ash needs to call on them. In fact, I doubt ANY of Ash's fully evolved Pokemon besides Unfezant would be on Ash's "worst team ever". Realistically his worst team is probably like Torkoal, Oshawott, Boldore, Palpitoad, Unfezant, and Scraggy. And I know that's a little heavy on the Unova team, but win/loss rates don't matter as much as feats and reliability in some cases, and Unova Ash was definitely Ash at his absolute worst, rock bottom in terms of skill and experience and his Pokemon were trash. Dishonorable mentions to Leavanny, Snivy, Bayleef, and Totodile. If you want a "vibe check" just think honestly "if Ash needed a clutch win against all odds at the last minute versus an actually competent opponent, does anyone on this team REALLY have the potential to?" And the answer is no. That's also what kept Gible out of the dishonorable mentions, as its Draco Meteor fulfils that criteria, and it's what barely kept the rest of the dishonorable mentions off the team.

Feel bad for Heracross. Must have been a speed tie?
@JulianimeIsAmazing Жыл бұрын
@@rosheafan Yeah a speed tie for the writers, all the writers couldn't get to writing Ash's defeat fast enough, they all won the race to see who could write Ash's BS defeat the fastest. The one writer who came up with the brilliant strategy to use sleep talk Heracross in the first place after he'd set up the epic foreshadowing for it against Nando clearly called in sick that day.

There were a few more factors to consider for making a terrible team, which pokemon were given special training sessions and which ones were left behind to train. Pidgeot did do pretty bad at the beginning of the journey however it was left behind after evolving and only rejoined Ash in the very end so who knows if its been getting any stronger or stayed the same. Gliscore has a similar situation where it got an evolution for a necessary power boost but had to be left behind for special off-screen training so we only saw its best in the Sinnoh league, it doesn't make it any better but it has it leaves the question if it gained anything akin to levels or EVs during its off-screen training.Torterra has probably a worse trade off ever since Ash recruited Paul's Chimchar because it became the most focused pokemon out of the entire Sinnoh team so Torterra was badly neglected as well as Buizel in some degree. A lot of Ash's Unovan pokemon were left unused so it doesn't surprise me if some of them were not fully trained or were lagging behind during Black and White, probably because they were swapped out for type substitutions like Oshawott with Palpatoad but I can't say that with certainty. Torcoal though, yeah that thing is both bad and very neglectful, it would need an ability capsule to gain drought, swap out either flamethrower or heatwave for solar beam, and teach it body press over body slam to make it more threatening but even then I doubt it would be good enough to be considered mid.

Though Sirfetch'd lost most of its battles. The anime framed most of his battles as doing a LOT of damage to the other mon gauranteeing Ash's win. Garchomp for example took a meteor assault and it weakened her enough for Lucario.
@MarcusMapua Жыл бұрын
At the time of his reveal, a lot of people were surprised they gave Ash another Fighting type with Riolu/Lucario. The only reason people liked him was because of his vocal cry as Farfetch'd by it saying Come On due to its japanese name being Kamonegi (Kamon~Come On; and when it evolved it became more like Gamon). Moreover pointed out in the anime, if you fully disarm Sirfetch'd, he's practically defenseless/useless.

I don't know if you can put any of Ash's Sinnoh Pokemon on the worst team without taking into considering the narrative albatross around their necks that is Infernape. It would be interesting to see how many of their losses are also Infernape wins because it had to look good because it had a sad backstory.

Sirfetch’d is the goat, he might not have many wins under his belt but he is strong. He was able to defeat Drasna’s Mega Altaria, Rintos Gallade and Cynthia’s Milotic. He was also able to make Cynthia’s Garchomp almost faint now that is strong. Also Torterra only got worse cause Ash wasn’t used to training slower Pokémon and he was going up against much strong opponents. Noivern got barely any battle development cause they were focusing more on Ash Greninja and Gliscor was written to be weak at the beginning, too which he became a stronger battler.
@guts60 Жыл бұрын
The worst team? Well, a team doesn’t have to be a FULL team. It just has to be a Pokémon in his party. So, with that in mind, Ash’s worst team is a singular Tauros, preferable whichever one has the worst moves and/or is the lowest level out of the 30

I will not have this competitive Torkoal slander Torkoal is amazing right up until restricted pokemon pop up in VGC. It's got the super useful trait of being both an eruption user and a sun setter (via Drought). Get it in trick room with choice specs and it's hard to contend with. In addition, it still has useful coverage like earth power and has a little bit useful utility, most notably yawn (sleep is the second best status condition behind freeze if just going by pure output). You can also run body press if you really want to in order to get around more specially defensive mons due to your massive 140 defense stat.

Torterra definitely suffered from Infernape being ash's main non pikachu pokemon. Started with Turtwig being his second best only for Turtwig and it's evolutions to keep taking further and further a back seat as every other pokemon ash got became story relevant, buizel with Ambipom, Infernape Blaze, Gliscor's fear and eventual evolution, staraptor having to evolve to counter Paul's Honchkrow. Every other pokemon had a better end to their story, while Ash's Torterra began becoming a worse clone of Paul's the entire time.

Will you do a video where u talk about how much Ash’s Pokémons should’ve actually grown instead of the show constantly merging them when it suits the show? Like I don’t like how scraggly got thrown into battle and holding his own despite being a baby Pokémon who was just born (when he got thrown into that martial arts tournament in BW) And there’s def some of Ash’s Pokémon that should’ve evolved long before each series ended, like Snivy and Buizel.

More proof in the case that charizard didn’t know how to fly, Because he wasn’t properly trained, Charizard was lacking compared to the others in his species Sorry for the mini essay, ash is just that bad of a trainer
