Thank You Dr. Abramson, another great lecture! I apologize for the level of ignorance, bigotry, nationalism & hatred seen in many of these comments. The ability to objectively study history without today’s biases seems impossible for some people.

@Stephen by the time the Khazar story happened most Jews around the world had already been majority literate for around 700 years. This alleged conversion spread by pen around the Jewish world as Jews communicated with one another bo matter their location since before Roman times. After the initial reports there is no mention of the khazar conversion again. So likely it turned out not to be real or maybe it was just one ruler who converted. The great Jewish sages of Spain in the 9th century spoke about the state of Jewish communities around the world and khazar is never mentioned so its assumed that it got debunked rather quickly.

Thank you, Dr. Abramson. I have a question regarding lecture #56 "No, Ashkenazi Jews are not Khazars". Unfortunately there was wasn't a place to comment on that video. My Question is: If the Khazars, who were or are caucasian, as are the modern Jews, and the ancient Hebrews, using Biblical and historical evidence, were mostly black, where did the modern Jews come from, if not Khazaria?

Genesis talks about the descendants of Noah, not the lands that they lived in. The Jews of Europe were named as Ashkenazi Jews in the 11th century. Before that time they were called, "Jews". The term Ashkenazi means from the land of Ashkenaz, which was changed to Gernany and France in the 1100s, before that it was thought to be near Turkey. Just as the Sephardi are from Sepharad (Spain). The Judeans (Jews) were never Ashkenazites or Ashkenazarians, as they never claimed to be descendants of Ashkenaz. Ashkenaz of the Torah is only mentioned 4 times, he has no descendants mentioned. There is not one place that mentions Jews as descendants of Ashkenaz.

Sir, would you argue that Ashkenazis, as a nation - whether Jewish or non-Jewish religiously - are genetically an Indo-European people? Yiddish seems to be at its very core a Germanic language akin to Danish, Dutch, German, etc, and since Yiddish is the national language of the Ashkenazi, the evidence seems to suggest Ashkenazis are purely European. On a visual level, Ashkenazis exhibit pale to rosy skin and rectangular facial structures, which are aspects of Germanic phenology. If this is true, then wouldn’t it have been more appropriate to establish an independent Yiddish state in southwest Germany, by the name of Ashkenaz, and have it function in a similar manner to Austria and Switzerland, than to establish a Yiddish state in the Levant, which is a Semitic region? I believe an independent, nationalist Yiddish country is the only way the Ashkenazi people can survive and thrive into the future, especially since they are one of the few stateless European nations still around today. I would love to know your thoughts on the matter, sir.
@jamesr8584

The DNA studies show they originated from the Levant, and after the Roman expulsion they mixed with Europeans where they settled. Clearly there are physical differences between Ashkenazi and Germans. The Germans are indigenous to Europe; whereas, Ashkenazi are a mixture of Middle Eastern and European. Israel is not fully Ashkenazi, the last I checked only about 26%, there are Sephardi, Mizrahi, Arabs, Ethiopian Jews, etc.

Uy, Henry... you shouldn't know from it! I THOUGHT my family was Ashkenazi until this past week. You see, my brother came for a visit. He informed me that he had his DNA and his son's DNA tested. Our mother's side was indeed, Ashkenazi Jewish. However, for the life of us, I cannot understand how in the world, according to DNA testing, our father turned out to be 100% Italian, specifically, from Sardinia. This makes absolutely no sense, since my father's parents were immigrants from Minsk, who migrated first to Toronto, then to Buffalo around 1905! This DNA result was confirmed by brother's son, who turned out to be 25% Sardinian. It is certainly a mystery which I cannot for the life of me explain. Now, these things entered my mind... had my mother had an affair with some Italian guy? Not likely, since the resemblance amongst all four brothers is distinct. Was my father adopted? Not likely, since my grandparents were immigrants, and I doubt very much they were looking to adopt. Perhaps my dad was switched at birth? I guess that is possible, but unlikely. So, if you could figure this mystery out, you get the medal! My family has no idea as to why our DNA is half Italian.

See my comment after yours. What coincidence! If a Jewish woman marries a non-Jew, there will probably be no Jewish associated Y chromosome unless the non-Jew were a convert or in a paternal lineage converts. The mitochondrial DNA of Ashkenazi women are almost exclusively Greco Roman. There are really not many other ways to tell whether someone has a Jewish ancestry in Ashkenazi Jews except for a few specific genes in specific lineages. If you don’t find them, you wouldn’t know.

Was Ashkenaz in northeastern Anatolia, the ancient name of that area or was it later named by resident Jews for the Noah and/or Jeremiah reference? Probably the latter. Why did the Rhineland Jews call themselves Ashkenazi? Probably a memory of being from Ashkenaz, Anatolia and the genetics seems to support that. The genetics of a large sample of Yiddish speaking Jews (proxy for Ashkenazis) indicates that they originated in northeastern Anatolia/western Iran (the land of Ashkenaz). So, are they descendants of ancient Israelites, who migrated to Ashkenaz? No, they have little genetic connection to the Levant. Bedouins, Palestinians and Maronite Lebanese, in that order, carry the genes of the ancient inhabitants of the Levant.

The ancient burials have no remains of blacks in Israel. The ancient synogogues have mosaics and frescoes of the people, they are all light skinned. The Egyptians have paintings of the Israelites and they are not dark skinned with sharp noses. The DNA of the Samaritans is over 2500 years old, they were there from the time of the Babylonians. I am not sure whether you are aware that whereas the paternal Y chromosomes of Ashkenazi Jews is middle eastern and related to ‘Palestinians’, Bedouins, and interestingly part of the population of northern Italy, the maternal mitochondrial DNA ( the only mitochondrial DNA we can inherit and is in the maternal egg cell fertilized by the sperm cell) is almost exclusively Greco Roman maternal mitochondrial DNA in Ashkenazi Jews. In other words, we share the same ancestral mothers of Greeks and Romans ( Greeks and Italians and other people from those lands). In that way, we are connected to Japheth. I don’t think any of this is critical although it is fascinating. I grew up being told the glories of my ancestry but the Tanahk was something for someone else. I hope we will see an end to prioritizing our ethnicity one day and strive to spread the Torah to the world and make more Israelites. It has already started without us but prophecy says this is what will happen and it should be more important than lineage. How else will we become as numerous as the stars in the sky or grains of sand in the world?

Mr.4givin Ashkenazi Jews are Jews that lived in the Rhineland area of Europe. A region called Ashkenaz. These Jews originally lived in the Roman Empire (Acts 18:2, Acts 18:19). They moved further north into the Rhineland during the Middle Ages. Jeremiah 31:8 prophesied their return to Israel. Sephardic Jews = Jews of Spain/Portugal (Obadiah 1:20). Mizrahi Jews = Jews of Middle East (Isaiah 11:11, Acts 9:22).

There's a mainstream historical account: A Scythian king in Rome was practicing idolatry in public. Scythian wheat merchants in Rome saw this and killed him. Also in ancient Scythia, not just idolatry was banned but also pork. Anthropologist Robert Sepehr covers this extensively. To me this information seems to validate the Scythians as Northern Kingdom 'lost' tribes sometimes mentioned as people of Manasseh and Ephraim, or of Scythopolis. It's rather absurd that this theory seems universally rejected by the status quo academia in spite of obvious merits to the case-- not mention the merits of always exploring all documented theories on any controversy.

@@Enzo505 while I wouldn't want to conflate the two I would propose some degree of possible connection if one reflects upon Noachic ethnography: Shem Cham and Yaphet were all caucasian-- (one black child, one Middle Eastern, one caucasian is just laughable)-- and that right after the Northern Tribes dispersion two vast caucasian domains appeared from 500 BCE and 500 CE-- the Celts and the Scythians (and in Celtic case the Archdruid wore regaila pretty much identical to Kohen Gadol (see Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall)-- which would seem counter common understanding that Ashkenazi Jews would look more like biblical Jews than Sephardic Jews (although biblically there was always racial mixing via converts to some degree at least, always a racial rainbow) but in my opinion that's where the evidence points and scholarship before post WW2 truth embargo seems rooted in this understanding; as to your point, if China and Rome could be aware of each other certainly Scythians could have been aware of Rabbinicism regardless of how dominant it was, it seems hasty to dismiss any connection entirely-- although if Khazarian Israelites/other ethnicities were largely infiltrated by Baalism in 'Caucasia' an exodus to European Ashkenaz from Caucasian Ashkenaz in 900 CE is at least plausible I would say.

I ask this because some of my ancestors are Hakka people of China who are often referred to as the "Jews of Asia," and were surnamed Lee which according to one of your previous videos was a surname given to the Levy or Levi clan. I have not been genetically tested yet but I would like to know what to look for if I do get tested. Also, is there a specific company or test that the Israeli government may prefer if they were to acknowledge the results of this test? And if so, would it be possible to go through a study of Hebrew or Talmud for the purpose of Bar Mitzvah? Thank you in advance for your reply. Stay Safe, Be Well, God Bless.

The Khazar theory has already been proven to not be true. Historical and scientific research have already settled the question. Beginning primarily in the late 9th/early 10th century, Jews arrived in Italy and Greece via the Mediterranean and many eventually settled in what was known as the Rhineland, in modern day Germany. They developed a diaspora culture and the Yiddish language there, mixing their indigenous language of Hebrew with the local language of German. During the early Crusades in the Middle Ages they were forced to disperse and settled in Poland and other nations in that region. They became know as the Ashkenazim.
