Very interesting topic. I really appreciate how you cover not only the "how's", but also the "why's." It adds gravity to what you are presenting. I try to learn new things every week. Curtis, you are one of my favorites. Great job, as always! Checking out the "R2-D2" video, next.

Nice nod to the Zoom H4N! I bought mine back in 2009 and still use it almost every day! It can do so much. Use it as a field recorder alone, or with mics for my video production company. And then as a hobby I play the bass guitar and it’s so good for practicing. Can load up songs and play along with them. Even has a built in chromatic tuner, effects, metronome. One of the best purchases I ever did.

Great subject! Your video on how to reconfigure MixPre USB routing was so helpful back in the day. And I remember the horror of three of us (one audio engineer included) trying to fix output routing on a big digital pro mixer board at a venue. It is kind of basic in theory but not always in practice. it makes everything a bit less intuitive, especially if the device user interface design has issues and isn’t helpful. This video will be very helpful prep to anyone suddenly facing routing issues for their first time.

Thanks randomgeocacher, I agree - simple concept, often tricky in practice.

Ive found that any mixer in the signal path adds noise...Ive been using the mixer in the software with a DAW control surface to avoid all that...the preamps in the sony cameras Im using are the only gain stage...and they are pretty quiet...

Great video, as always, Curtis! That said, while I appreciate your affection for SONOMAX's M2D2, I don't see that recorder/mixer showing loyalty a Skywalker has never seen in a droid before, or ensuring the stolen data tapes get to a princess leading a rebellion, or even being able to shut down all the garbage smashers on the detention level.

So how is audio routed to camera for example like when producers and directors view camera playback with audio from their comtek’s
@curtisjudd5 ай бұрын
Likely the audio mixer feeds a production mix to camera but it differs production to production.

Hi Curtis, I’d like to ask your advise. I want to use a BOOM or Shotgun microphone that can be connected to the PC for my Zoom Meeting daily as i don’t want to look like a podcaster during a formal meeting. I needed the camera to be hidden from the camera angle. What is the BEST boom or shotgun microphone that has the quality sound of a Shure Sm7B or Shure Mv7? Thanks Curtis
@curtisjudd3 жыл бұрын
The best - do you really mean the very best? How about a Schoeps Super CMIT 3U with active noise cancelling? But I’m guessing you mean a reasonably priced option. You might have a look at the RODE VideoMic NTG, but I’d keep it as close as you reasonably can so maybe just at the bottom of the frame. If you boom it from above, it will not sound the same as an SM7B or any other close dynamic microphone. Here’s a demo of different types of mics in different positions for livestreams or Zoom calls: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6OmlmeLg9yqj8k And here’s a review of the RODE VideoMic NTG: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWWzpmpof5p1iKc

Curtis, I have a question please, do phones record as good as receivers?

Wireless receivers usually do not record on their own. So this is a very hard question to answer.

I've had challenges with Audio Drifting out of Sync when I record the Audio separately then try to combine with Video. I combine the audio and Video all synced up .. Then about 6mins down I see Sync Issues. Could you indicate what might cause recorded audio to not be in time with the Video after a few mins. I was thinking that the Audio is being played back at a different rate from what was recorded .. I'm new to this .. Thanks
@curtisjudd3 жыл бұрын
This is often an issue with consumer oriented audio recorders or cameras. They sometimes just have poor internal clocks and others also use variable rate encoding which might also cause sync issues.
