What is Autism? Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is behaviorally described. It is seen in children and it starts early in life. The issue is in three areas being involved which is your social communication, disordered speech and language, not just delayed language, but disordered language, or atypical language development. And then the area is of restricted, repetitive behaviors and play. And these are the three criteria that have been used in the DSM4. The new classification, which is now the DSM5, really focuses on two areas, which is the disordered social communication, and the repetitive play and stereotypies, etc. So this is a newer classification but there are many other areas that we see with children, beyond the exact DSM diagnosis. A lot of kids have sensory issues. They can be oversensitive to sound and texture or undersensitive.
There're kids who have savant skills, very gifted. Parents come in excited, these kids are reading by two and three years of age, and actually these kids have a photographic memory who are just repeating things and have what we call, "echolalia", repeating words or scripting, which is knowing a dialogue from a book or a movie verbatim. So many of these unusual things are also seen in children with what we call now the "Autism Spectrum Disorder." And medical issues is another area that we can talk about, but basically it's important to understand the behavioral disorder involved and making the diagnosis.
So the term, "Autism", was first coined by Dr. Leo Kanner in the '40s and he described children with these particular difficulties as I mentioned, with communication, with speech, and with repetitive play and particular interests. But over the years, the naming has changed from childhood schizophrenia to psychosis to pervasive developmental disorders, and that is commonly used as well, but the current language is, "Autism Spectrum Disorders", because it is a matter of degree of involvement. And I think that is very important to understand that we are labeling the children. We are looking at symptoms and we are trying to define them because it becomes important for diagnosis as well as to provide services. I don't want anybody to be just called, "Oh this child is autistic". I want the child to be remembered for who they are, having particular symptoms that we have labeled as having Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I have an autistic friend and I am a future psychologist myself so it is interesting to interact with him. What is most interesting about it though is that autism is on the rise and while the cause is still unclear to professionals, it is suspected it has a lot to do with the decreasing amount of human interaction in our day to day lives. The cultural changes by technology and media causes people to spend less time interacting with other human beings and more time artificially interacting with them trough social media networking. Indeed, it will be an interesting subject to research and discover about in the future and how we can battle against it, if it even is something that should be prevented since that too is still somewhat unclear.

MAC KASH Because our brains are also plastic to the environment. For example, recent studies revealed that those people who consume a lot of porn, have their, what we call the " grey area " in brain to be smaller of that of the most people. This area of the brain controls our motivation and sexual instinct as well. Meaning that the people who consumed more born, actually had a bit different brains structure because of that and were less inclined to be motivated or sexually attracted to other real people. Yes, you are correct in saying that autism is something you are born with, but it is also true that due to the way our brains can actually be very morphing and the way our societies exist, those factors of our brains that cause autism are on the rise. So it makes autism ever so growing issue among younger people whose social and cognitive brain development is lacking due to social medias influences, while at the same time causing autism to be more common than it was ever before. Environments do have a significant influence to our development. It is one of the major biggest factors alongside education and parents. Another similar occasion how our societies structures evolving has affected is that just recently, excessive usage of selfies and posting them on social media was linked with selfishness, addiction and narcissism. Or the increased amount of divorces has been linked to the increased amount of tiredness and stress of our modern western busy daily lives. Interesting isn't it. I knew when I heard about this, I was incredibly skeptical but now that I am at a university, studying these things I can see it at first hand. How powerful our brains are when they can defy biology even. Nothing is quite like that in our world.
@Jenkkimie

MAC KASH You would be correct in your assumption. Indeed, the savant syndrome is something that is most of the time connected to brain injuries but some approximately 50% also suffer from autism. Savant syndrome results from damage to the left anterior temporal lobe, the key are of processing sensory input, forming visual memories and recognizing objects. Other notable characteristics more commonly recorded are low IQ, while at the same time having this incredible ability to do some particular thing, like maths or art in almost inhumane efficiency. They also seem to possess especially effective and accurate sensory to detail due to the sensory hypersensitivity with these individuals. Which means that despite their generally lower IQ and brain development, some of their sensory system and talents are hyper active. Savant syndrome is certainly an interesting topic worth further investigation as it is pretty mysterious, even for psychologists. But like you, I have also always found human behavior and other activity, whether it is neurological or psychological to be something very interesting. Like when I discovered that if someone is staring at you, and you experience that feeling even if you are not looking at that person. Or why do we blush? Or for example, what causes autism and/or the savant syndrome. It is wonderful to hear that some people take great interest about these subjects because I think that it opens up whole new ways of understanding other people and seeing things in a bit different way than most people do.

MAC KASH Yes well it is okay. Indeed I agree with what you say and focusing on revealing how our brains function has been one of the more major focus points in the field of psychology. Many of these tests people with autism since they have these hidden capabilities that we are starting to understand and catch up to. In the future, we will be able to help these people as well as stimulate our brains to be even more effective, essentially having these sort of super human processing abilities. We are slowly gathering and revealing the secrets of our brains and how we can utilize it even further. Just recently this year, scientists were able to locate the on/off switch for our consciousness by stimulating a certain part of brain on a epileptic woman. Additionally, just a week ago. Fellow psychologists Edvard Moser, John O'Keefe and May-Britt Moser were awarded for discovering the human GPS in our brains. On the field of evolution psychology, we have been able to now demonstrate that other animals also have morals and group mentality, this recent research has proven that they have a sense of fairness and is the first leap in our understanding of how morality came to be. The current hypothesis of it is that it was beneficial to our species survival to have a sense of fairness towards each other and because partly of this, our species were so prosperous. So there is so much to learn about this mysterious, almost fungus like organ and it keeps amazing us humans of its capabilities and systems. There is also some technology that is being developed. As a hypothesis, it is possible that during our lifetime, we will be able to be 10 times as effective at learning and thinking as we are now. About the " 6th " sense system, I would add to that we also have a sense of our surroundings from our ancestors. For example, when you are out with your buddies and your buddy spots someone staring at you, he/she automatically, without knowing, moves her eyes just a tiny bit or then more to spot those people. OF course, consciously we do not often notice them doing it as don't they either but our sense do spot that sort of behavior so then we react as if there was something note worthy. With our ancestors, this sort of body language communication was especially vital when the environment and conditions were harsh and deadly. Anyways. It is wonderful to hear and talk to such an enthusiast. This world needs more people like you who recognize and value knowledge as well as psychology. It is often regarded as pseudoscience or soft science by many due to the nature of it but there is actually a great deal you can learn about it and a great deal to yet to be learned about it. Gladly though, the achievements of psychology and the popularity is on the rise and I think it should be as my personal belief is that we humans can open up many of the secrets of the universe by revealing the secrets of our brains.

This is crazy. You just labeled every child as autistic because they act like children. For example if you are a child you don't know many words so why wouldn't you repeat the words that you do know. And an exploring child interested in their surroundings and spending time by themselves to know what is around them is not autistic. Also, why do psychiatrists diagnose a neurological disorder instead of a neurologist? I'm an adult and I know why; they need to keep their jobs.

Tay K People with aspergers are not different to people with autism. If you'd read my post, aspergers is on the lower end of the autism spectrum. Here is the national autism society's explanation of aspergers: www.autism.org.uk/asperger If people are trying to separate the two, they'll need the help of doctors, autistic based groups and solid research into the conditions to give grounds for separating the two... Therefore you've just made yourself look silly on the internet. Anyway, if you want to make yourself look further silly, by all means argue with me... You'll only be entertaining me.
@tayk8800
@tayk8800 10 жыл бұрын
Seriously? People are trying separate them. Aspergers is less severe than autism. People with Aspergers can also have it very slightly. My friend was diagnosed with Aspergers because she is quiet. Aspergers and autism are similar only because they affect the same part of the brain. People with Aspergers are highly functioning, like the man who created FaceBook. They just have small problems like being quiet, getting nervous, and not making eye contact. People with Aspergers don't walk on their toes, or flap their hands. They also don't look different. People with autism have a certain look to them. People with Aspergers just look like normal people. If you want to fight I'll fight.
