So what is high-functioning autism? We know that autism is defined as children who have core deficits in social communications, speech and language development, as well as repetitive restricted activities- patterns of play for example, and stereotypies. A lot of these children can have some of these areas still being impacted which is why we define them as autism, but they are high-functioning. They may have a normal I.Q. They may have speech and language which is really not delayed but still atypical. For example, they can be scripting and have echolalia, but yet they are reading books at and above grade level.
I have kids two and three that are hyperlexic, who have taught themselves how to read, who may have some savant skills and be brilliant with the computers or music for example. And these children can actually function in mainstream settings, and are considered high-functioning, because one presupposes that autism means you have cognitive delay, or that you're not picking up on social cues.
But these children may have difficulty with social cues but they can be structured to function in a regular environment. With little support, you can have high-functioning kids really be mainstreamed, and in some areas even gifted. And they need to have the curriculum accommodated for that. Yet, some of those symptoms, for example the theory of mind. For example, picking up on what other people are thinking or the concept of empathy, or being very concrete or literal can be a problem for these children. So much that they are high functioning; they still have challenges and issues. Parents can be delighted that my child has learned three languages or can play a piano or can remember books verbatim for example, or is particularly good with numbers for example or computer technology etcetera, but they still have issues that need to be looked at.
So their strengths need to be celebrated, and yet we need to continue to provide supports for areas that they have difficulty with. And I think the important thing is the social piece, because you do need social communication. And you can be high-functioning academically, but I want them to be high-functioning socially, making friends, picking up on social cues.
What is interesting with kids with high-functioning Autism is that they can learn quickly. They have the cognition to understand "What do I need to do?" to make friends, to keep friends, to ask appropriate questions. So these children are easier to work with and they can actually counter some of the core deficits easier than a child who's not high functioning, but they still need supports. And, much that we get excited about their strengths, I really don't want you to forget the areas of difficulty that they still need support with.

Many who have high functioning autism cannot handle the liability of friends, even if they can make them. The social interactions are overwhelming and exhausting.

Justin Creswell it just takes a lot of concentration to learn and maintain a good social conversation. For people with high functioning autism, everything to do with social skills has to be learned. I have high functioning autism and for me, everything has to be broken down into a system that I can follow. I can't just improvise.

grits from the south I agree with you. Putting labels on children makes them less of individuals in my opinion. Society needs all of us to act the same and be easy to control. If we show any difference we are being handed out drugs to push back what makes us unic and special.

HFA is both a blessing and a curse. My analytical skills are I'd say above average and allows me to excel at certain things within my job. The flip side is I can't hold a basic conversation sometimes. It's hard for some people to understand but at times I literally don't know what to say. I'll be talking to someone and they'll say something and I'll sit there blank faced which is a huge put off. People tend to think I'm just not interested in the conversation when in fact I just mentally don't know how to reply. It is frustrating beyond belief.

Our adult son was diagnosed with high functioning autism as a pre schooler. He did not talk, would not make eye contact, threw horrible melt downs that lasted for hours. We were fortunate to reside near a University Teaching Research in Oregon which accepted him immediately and worked with him eight hours a day five days a week. We eventually main streamed him with special educational classes and IEPs. I can't imagine what we would have gone through had we not lived in an area that was already devising therapy for children with special requirements. The therapists got him to accept being touched, found medications that resulted in his speaking which lessened the melt downs. He is now 27, married with two children. He functions in the community, but is misunderstood by most people. They find him rude, exclusive, etc.and we fear any random involvement with police, etc. Ongoing support from family will likely continue in order for him to be employed, stay married, etc. We were told by Specialists that he would never function outside a 24 hour supportive home. Die to early intervention, that did not prove true. Most people upon meeting him do not notice any symptoms, etc. This video could be better, but the real message is to get early intervention.

Tbh I just portray myself as a reclusive type of person and it kind of helps when trying to avoid socially exhausting situations. It also helps find others who won't wear me down with small talk and awkward, painful silence. It does get lonely sometimes, but I always have my true friends and family to help recharge.

My analytical mindset is a curse. I nitpick everything that has no logic and I always need an exploration for myself. For example, when I use my imagination or play a video game and it's something that is complex (I.e a cool robot with a gun) I need to explain to my self the very exact schematics.

I am really good at solving logical puzzles, and picking up talents quite quickly, but it's still a problem for me to express how I feel to others. Sometimes I just don't reply to their questions because it's a non-verbal day for me, and sometimes I get very closed up inside my head so much so that conversation is out of question. I count my steps when I walk alone because it keeps me focused, and I tap things and fiddle with my sleeves. I just can't seem to figure out how other people are feeling, and I have trouble showing how I'm feeling, but I guess other than that I'm not all that different.

i have hfa. and when as a child i would be in meltdown i would think about stars how they came to be, over the years instead of melting down and learning at an earlier age than is socially acceptable the realm of maths my life became so different. no meltdowns just days of silence while im thinking deeply than most humans can cope or achieve. now i have a knowledge of the universe to be comfortable in conversation with astrophysicists of the highest rank and maths skills that i did not even need teaching. we see the world so differently and connect to the world around us in a way someone who is not hfa can never understand......................someone asks me what its like to have hfa i say its like having one hell of a huge gift at times. when focused.

Hello. They wont, even if you had Wayne Gretzky explain it to them. Fact: ~1 in 25 CEOs are psycopaths or have psycopathic abilities. Meaning they dont give a f-bomb about you, they just want your body as a tool to give them more money, if that is what they want. Noone understands about autism and that is the problem, every case is unique and its just now with the help of brain scanners when we can start to understand what it is and how it works.

Being social is still important, I m sorry.. you can choose to turn a blind eye to it, but as long as our species have a huge enough population socialising will be key to Survival, he doesn't have to be a social butterfly but basic social abilities would be needed at some point, else he'll always need a caretaker of some form...those are my thoughts, wish u and your family the best in life, stay happy stay safe!❤️

Temple Grandin is an amazing person with Autism to follow and listen to. She teaches that the worst thing you can have children with Autism do is to isolate themselves. You have to constantly push children with Autism to stretch a lit bit outside their comfort zone everyday. They need structure and a routine outside the family home. It’s also best to teach Autistic children to work at an early age and figure out what they like or don’t like (get into extracurricular activities I.e. wood shop, horseback riding, gardening, working with animals, etc.) Too many Autistic people are overprotected and hide inside their homes most likely playing video games and that ultimately creates more anxiety and wastes their talents and potential.

I’ve always had special needs, but I didn’t receive my Autism diagnosis until I was 22, back in 2000. Actually, they said that it was Asperger’s Syndrome. I’d also been diagnosed with OCD. At one point, I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. Recently, a new therapist told me that, after my OCD screening, that I had outgrown a lot of the behaviors, associated with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. She’d also told me that my diagnosis of PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder- Not Otherwise Specified) was outdated and that I currently have Autism Spectrum Disorder, so she had to update my chart. It felt like such a huge relief 😮‍💨, when she said that. I really do feel like I’ve grown a lot over the years, since my original diagnosis.

I'm a really awkward and quiet junior that appears clueless and slow in social situations. Little does anyone know, I'm intensely obsessed with theoretical physics and multi-variable calculus and never stop thinking about those subjects. With all the genuity I can summon, I truly don't understand how some NTs struggle with things like algebra but thrive in social situations. I mean it's just a simple language with quantitative logic as your guide, but social interactions are a whole mess of staying perfectly tuned in with everyone's nonverbal cues and all this eye contact, interpreting motivations and perspectives, all this crazy drama with literally hundreds of factors and variables at play in the system; it makes ZERO sense how they do this almost completely unconsciously with relative ease, but struggle to consciously manipulate a 2 variable system: an input and an output. (Like functions in algebra). Obviously most people understand algebra, it was just an easy example to reference because that is what I experienced in middle school: students who struggled in maths and sciences but thrived under social pressure and competition which is absolutely alien to me.

This is the struggle we have, my son is 10 but school hasn't been good for him it's has been a big set back for him. His shut down in many ways but he is amazing with a high vocabulary but has a a speech and sound disorder it's one of his main struggles he will be the first to tell u. School can't seem to see just because he has high levels at some but struggles with other areas. Even with an IEP they expect way to much from him without giving him the proper amount of services. We need to find ways to help them thrive not make it so they have meltdowns just being in the building for 2 1/2 hrs. They refuse to give him a 1:1 aide because he is able to use the restroom on his own and doesn't seem to be appropriate with his classmates. Not sure how that really tells us he doesn't need an aide.

Same here, my son is 12 and very similar to your story. The best thing to do is take a deep breath and not look at their grades every week. Just let them do what they like that's positive and reinforce his areas of strength, while at the same time let his areas of weakness take it's place. Sometimes as parents we want them to academically thrive and succeed by meeting all expectations. Worry and pressure is their enemy, they feel trapped. Once they feel freedom, they will start doing amazing things under their natural creativity. Remember they are already intelligent and they will do great amazing things under their own pace and timing.

This conversation right here is GOLD for me as a mom of a 6 yr old HFA boy , thank you for expressing you guys true feelings. I never saw it that way! NOW i know why when i pick up my son at school he never wants to talk about his day. You see its "common" for a 6 yr old to get out of school and talk all the way home about what he did at school. But my son dosent. As a parent that worries us, that something in school is not going right and we start asking more and worrying more. Now i know my child might need to decompress a little before talking abou tge day. Thank you guys. Big xo live life but be safe. PS: notice I use the word "common" instead of "normal" is because to me there is no "normal" whats normal to you may not be normal for me. Being different is what makes everyone unique and individual what unites us as a human race is caring for one another.

Diane W psychologists or psychiatrists usually make the determination. I found out I was HFA from my school psychologist. I refused to go near people and wouldn't speak for hours or even days to people at times. Unfortunately for me I was still young at a time when people mostly shined that off as "oh he is just shy" and the like. I didn't pick up cognitive behavior therapy treatment until much later than I should have. I'm much improved now. I still have issues but it's just part of the ongoing battle.
