Using the af-on button works great, particularly when acquiring subjects, composing and tracking action. But, there are too many purists who turn off the af function on the shutter button as well. I refuse to do this. I still have muscle memory that means I still use the shutter button first when I am taking reaction shots. I also allocate FN1 button to spot focus. So I can move in from my normal small group focus to a single spot.

@Woodpecker14044 жыл бұрын
For some reason, despite using shutter release focusing for 30 years, when I changed to BBF about 5 years ago I instantly preferred it, no need to get used to it, it just seems so natural. No fussing about looking for single shot or continuous focus options ever again. The only issue was remembering that I’d set it up when I came to the camera the following day and wondered for 5 seconds why it wouldn’t focus! (So if someone this stupid can do it anyone can!). The only other downside is that if you need to get someone else to use your camera quickly you have to explain - and afterwards there’s a whole conversation about why you would do it. Now I can just hand them your video. Brilliant!

It's all about what is easiest for you in any particular situation. For hers in this video, bbf is the obvious choice. However if you are in changing circumstances, you can have the shutter button doing its usual thing but be able to switch OFF the auto focus with the bbf button; that way you can stop the focus hunting by pressing & holding the bbf button. Same result, and available whenever needed. I do it for candid portraits when I'm not in single shot - I focus as usual then hold bbf button in and reframe as required.

I have used bbf for quite some time. I have both the 'af on' button and the * button both set to start autofocus. In addition to that I have programmed the 'af on' button to use servo focus and the * button to use single shot focus. The camera is set to servo focus by default and so the 'af on' button is used as standard but for those occasions when focusing is difficult ( generally in poor light) or when the subject is still I can use the * button. I find single shot to be more accurate and so having the option to choose instantly which option I want is incredibly useful. The programmability of modern cameras is amazing even if it does take an old Luddite an absolute age to work out. At least once it's set up I shouldn't have to make changes. Good video.
@janinekrayer24994 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, thanks so much for watching my video. I also have both the "AF-On" and the "*" button programmed as back button focus. It just avoids any possible confusion. It is great that Canon allows for that. However, I use the "AF-On" button as a single point focus and the "*" button as a 9 point focus. I don't feel the need for ONE Shot focus as bbf transforms your back button into both AI Servo and One Shot at the very same time. Not literally ... but practically. What I mean by that is the following: while you are keeping the bbf pressed you are constantly tracking your subject (that is if you are on AI Servo)! However, as soon as you let your thumb go and do not press the button anymore does your camera remember the last point of focus (even when you are on AI Servo) and therefore it is as if you are on ONE shot. If it is dark or your subject isn't moving you can therefore focus, let go of the button, and then recompose your picture by shifting the frame without having to go to ONE Shot. I find that is one of the most amazing features of bbf.
@robertlawrence79584 жыл бұрын
Janine Krayer. Hi Janine, setting the buttons to select single and nine points sounds a great idea. I will take a look at that. I can see your point regarding bbf as being virtually a single shot at the same time as being in servo but I find that using servo in poor light is not quite as accurate or quick to acquire focus as single shot. An awful lot of my photography here in Wales seems to be in less than favourable conditions hence the way I set my camera up. What is so amazing is how flexible these modern cameras can be. To be able to configure so many controls to ones individual needs is brilliant. I hope you, your family and all your colleagues are safe and well during these trying times.

5D III - It will do back button focus fine, but I don't use that method. I have 2 buttons set up to stop focus if needed. The af-on button is set to af-off (you focus on your point/subject, press af-on button with your thumb which freezes focus while you recompose and take the shot) and the depth of field preview button is set to switch to one shot if I am in servo mode (while you hold the button with your finger, you switch from servo to one shot if in servo mode or from one shot to servo if in one shot mode). This allows me to keep the camera in the mode most people understand, press the top button to focus and take the shot (if you hand the camera to someone to take a shot it will work the way they expect).
@PangolinWildlife3 жыл бұрын
Hi, you are the second person today that has used this method and I find it genius. HOwever, I personally just cannot use the top button for focus anymore and would probably get confused with the number of buttons that I need to press. I never have the need to use ONE SHOT at any given time so it is one step too much for me... cheers Janine
@thenderaaa92523 жыл бұрын
@@PangolinWildlife I totally understand about keeping it simple, the less buttons to push, the easier it is to keep focused (see what I did there?). So in the above scenario my default operation is the top button focuses using AI servo and also takes the shot when pressed completely, the exception process is switching to single shot mode via an extra button. However, if I were ever in a position to take photos of Elephants or Lions in the wild, I would probably get so excited I would forget how to do anything!

This was happening both when I was trying to capture birds of prey in flight (a local Osprey) or aviation (during a recent trip to the "Jedi Transition". Because I have been shooting with the focus linked to my shutter releas for about 45-50 years, it is so ingrained that in the heat of the moment, I would almost always forget to press the back button. I definitely see the advantages, but I may be too set in my ways to learn it to the pint where this becomes my new muscle memory.

I tried BBF for about a year and while it was very good I kept missing shots, not the ones I had time to think about but those where a BIF suddenly pops out in front or to the side of me. I have to say I think it is me, I had a stroke some years ago and often find speech and intricate things can be difficult. I had to learn to walk, talk, and do things needed for my job as a computer programmer all over again, I was in the hospital for 3 months and it took years to recover. That being said what I have been doing is using the shutter button for focus and the AF-ON as AF-off so i can recompose and the "*" for single point. I find that way I miss less shots that spring up in front of me. Yes at times I miss the BFF when I have time to compose, but it has been working for me. I may actually take your advice and go back and give it a go again. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi Janine, although I am an amateur I use back button focus. I shoot with a Nikon D500 camera and the Nikon 200-500 tele-photo lens. My af/on button is set for single point autofocus and my joystick button is set for group autofocus. I understand that when setting up for back button focusing this takes away the focus function away from the front shutter button. When using single point focus, you gain and lock focus and as you mention the camera remembers that focus point. In readiness to take the photo I usually press the shutter button half way down and when ready press shutter button all the way down to take the photograph. By pressing the shutter button half way down and holding, does this cancel the focus lock as sometimes I get an out of focus shot and I am not sure if I have gained correct focus in the first instance.

I entered wildlife photography late, so I use the back button to defocus rather than to focus. My shutter button does AF when I half-press. I read that BBF was introduced back in the days when lenses and cameras were slow to autofocus. Today's cameras and lenses are very fast and accurate at AF. With BBF, when shooting a moving bird, you're more likely to hold down 2 buttons to shoot. With BB-defocus, you hold down just the shutter button, and for birds not moving you press the back button to disable AF. Birds are likely moving than sitting still.

Thanks for the video. Learned from it. Love the chair! I tried BBF some time back and could not get use to it. I missed a lot of shots. I know I should have given it more time but did not really find it useful. I never shift focus points. I just use the center focus points and recompose, it takes less than a second. It would take much longer to shift the focus points. And focusing and shooting the classic way amounts to a one step process as opposed to the two step back button focus. I can see there are times where you might want to use BBF but the way I shoot I never come across it. Still thanks for the video.

Hi Antonio thanks so much for watching my video! The chairs are pretty awesome. Especially when having to wait for a specific situation and your arm falls off. Sometimes the good old beanbag or arm power is the best way to go. If you would like to test them, come and visit us in Botswana for some wildlife photography. With respect to one-shot and having to recompose: it works well for portraits and both you and your subject need to be stationary. A lot of our photography happens from moving platforms such as boats. It is like a floating hide! That one second already drifts you out of focus.... so very often there is just too much movement for it! .... I do admit though, it takes a few days to reprogram old habits!

Great explanation of BBF. Started using it years ago with my Canon bodies and I'll never go back. I use the AF on button on the back for AI servo and set the exposure lock button to single shot AF with beep (sound) confirmation. My wife's camera doesn't have the option and when I have to use it, it can be maddening. Very cool gimbal chairs!
@janinekrayer24994 жыл бұрын
Haha... I know, it is amazing how quickly one gets used to it. Interesting fact, you do not even need to program the star button for single shot anymore. You can use the very same button. As soon as you let your thumb go from your BBF it will remember its' last point of focus and it is as if it had locked on! So just let go of the button - you know you locked on - and recompose. The beeping sound drives me mad I must admit..... that way you give yourself room to reprogram the exposure lock button for a 9 spot focus area with AI servo for instance. My BBF is on single point focus and the star button on a group focus for birds in flight against the sky....

With a teacher like you, I'll be happy to learn all day. Should have been recommended before. The technic isn't new, but the way of explaining is tremendously impressive. Looking ahead for some more. By the way, would be happy to know about the stands accessories details, the gimbal and the chair.

Hi, thanks for the awesome compliment and watching my video. You can come for a photographic Safari and the teaching experience at any time. We would love to see you here in Botswana! It is a tremendous place to up your photography skills! Haha, yes the chairs are pretty awesome. But I must admit that they work much better on our boats than on open game drive vehicles. Our roads are just too bumpy to permanently mount / fix your camera. Sometimes the good old beanbag or arm power is the best way to go. We have custom designed them for our needs and went into production with a company called Gimpro... at the end you use normal Arca Swiss base plates to mount your camera. Especially good for longer lenses and portrait shots. For action, I still prefer to hand hold. If you would like to test them, come and visit us in Botswana for some wildlife photography.

@@janinekrayer2499 frankly speaking, though I persue photography as a hobby, I may not afford your Safari, even when I find it absolutely a photographer s paradise. Will certainly recommend it to someone who can. Thanks for complementary reply. If in India be my family's guest.

I was introduced ti back focus in a class about 3 years ago and never quite got the hang of it. Even though I shoot with Nikon, I was able to "get" the concept and location of the back button. Then your examples were incredibly clear and now I hope I will remember to use it often I especially like the preset in advance of flight or an animal moving. Yippee from Colorado USA.

I switched to BBF a few years ago and love it. I only shoot in Manual mode and, in my opinion, this is just an extension of the full control I want when shooting. Also, it's fantastic for sports (similar to moving wildlife). Used in conjunction with Continuous Auto Focus and Continuous Drive shooting, I can focus on a moving sports player and keep the BBF button depressed while tracking the player's movements. It's great! And getting used to it is easy. Thanks for explaining it so well and benefiting those not familiar with this useful feature.

In your video you described pre- focusing in anticipation of the bird flying towards you. With BBF and AI servo wouldn't holding the BBF button constantly (not once and letting go) while the bird flew towards you be a better alternative for getting the bird in focus?
@janinekrayer24994 жыл бұрын
Hi, that is a good question: In my experience any focus (even the one of the 1Dxiii) struggles with birdlife coming straight towards you as the change in focus just cannot keep up. By the time you trigger, your focus is still sitting by the initial perch that the bird sat on, while the bird is probably already 25 cm in front of it. Even on an F14 that would mean you are out of focus.... That holds especially for small and fast moving birds such as kingfishers, bee-eaters, swallows, etc.

Hi very interesting video. I have swapped to BBF thanks to you. I was wondering if BBF support the beam assist of a flash. I have got a 5d mIV and a godox 685c and I cannot use the IR beam with it. It works only if I go back to "half-press" the shutter button. What I am doing wrong? Thank you very much

I recently found out about this feature when switching camera's (and i didn't know my old 1000D had it). It was neat when waiting for a bird in a tree to look the other way without losing focus last minute.
