As you work with it, you will develop an understanding of why. Once you know why, you can adapt easily. I’m glad it helped you.

The illustration app is Coach Note Volleyball from the App Store (Apple). I use Screenflow to put it together or ECamm Live for segments I do live.

Would you still use a base defence with younger ages / shorter players (grades 4-6) where many of the front court players are not tall enough to block? If so, would you still have the front court players remain tight to the net? Thanks.

It's a good ida to have a base position, but base is dependent on your team's ability and skill level. For example, my high school team has a setter who is too short to block but plays front row. She goes close to the net for her base but adjusts behind any block we form to cover tips and touches. For younger players, you can have 0 blockers and have them play off the net to dig/cover some of the court. If you have someone tall enough to block, you might consider having them block while others cover court. Standing at the net as a non-blocker is a waste of court coverage, so I would have my front row players adjust to play defense off the net. I'd try to avoid the mentality of "I'm front row, so I don't dig." Over time, you should see the front row and back row move in concert with one another. If the back row moves back on a free ball, the front row should do so as well. Otherwise you get a dead zone in between. Lots of team score by putting the ball in that dead zone. Hope this helps.

What's the yellow cyan and red color

The colors let you see players who are opposite one another in their rotational positions.
