I prefer the narrow port personally. I find that the box does not have to be as large and for daily music it sounds much better.

thinking intuitively, the big port would have less air friction and compression and would he closer to an ideal model you’d get from WinISD or something. with the smaller port, the air friction would essentially slow down the speed of air movement and emulate a longer tube, allowing you to play a bit lower. however, at tuning, the air friction would also reduce your output as some energy is being lost.

Great explanation. What about the difference in the same sub with the same net volume but using a double flared port, straight pvc port, and wooden rectangular port inside the box and pro/con of each? It might be a long video. :). Anyway keep up the great content and awesome channel.

@@caraudiolab - I have seen that port requirements/equivalence using a rectangular port vs an "Aero"=( flared @ each end ), port= can be approx. 35% smaller. Example: If a rectangular port is 100 Sq. In. Of port area, a "Aero" port can be 65 Sq. In. Of port area.

Blew my VE1522 by having too big port even while playing on tuned frequency of the box, was tuned to 35hz and i didn't listen to anything below 30hz 99% of the songs were 35 and above and still 1 day just decided to die and stop working, so ig it's better to have smaller port than bigger because with smaller at least you won't kill it, yeah it won't get max performance but at least you can still listen to it

Sundown recommends 16 cubic inches opening per square foot of box size. Most of their subs, including the U series, follow this. So, you could add one more 8" port. However, the real question is, do you hear chuffing with your current ports?
@Nissanalltheway
@Nissanalltheway Жыл бұрын
No chuffing or high winds I’m able to make an square port the room I’m able to work with is 28w 11 h and length 15 to work with I don’t have enough room for an additional 8in port but I can make an wooden rectangular port
@caraudiolab
@caraudiolab Жыл бұрын
@@Nissanalltheway Your calculation is off a little bit. Here is an online calculator you can use: www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp#por However, if you don't have chuffing, then it is up to you if you want to add additional ports or increase a port size. You are around 100 square inches of port opening right now. You can do a slot port (rectangular) if you want. However, folding it back and forth may cost a small amount of db. Are you unhappy with what you currently have?
@Nissanalltheway

Yes it’s tuned very very high around 37. And I don’t have enough depth for longer ports I would use 2 8inch round bit I can only make them 10in so it won’t be close to back wall that is 16in depth.

nope. that is not what happens. the port acts like a litteral pipe. due to its length alone it will have harmonics. allso the air in that port has mass, and will resonate. you can measure, a drop of Fs when the port is big and long, vs when its short and skinny. both tune to box to the same freqvency, and the effect on Fs can be modelled by approximating the air mass in the port. not a huge change, but it is what it is. the larger change is the port harmonics freqvency. if the port is supper huge, the port resonance will actually have a bump in output. whitin the desired passband. and you will end up whit a sub, that actually plays midbass too. can be efficient enough that a 2nd order crossover will not manage to tame it. you end up whit a very bright , mushy sound. and lack of sub sound. in fact, imagine if the port is just as big in surface area as the box panel where you plan to put it. yess, that ends up as a TL. ports are a transmission line load on a sealed box, but allso have a helm-holtz resonance. that simple. aim for about 18 m/s port velocity Fb, and yer good to go.

Every builder 👷‍♂️ develops a lil bit of a system for porting. I like 4 inch round ports for 12's in a standard 2 cube box. Like he was saying big ports have a tendency to lack cone control. Unless you are in a competition I stay away from big ports... at max on 1 sub it might give 1.5 db, zaps the wallet when you smoke 🚬 the sub and the amp. If you have money 💰 to burn 🔥... I am curious about the bigger ports that actually work lol 😆

@@z1berzerker - Port chuffing/noise, just means the port area is not big enough. That 12 to 18 sq in. Of port area, per cu. Ft. is not the best way to calculate port area. Cone displacement is= Cone area x X Max= Volume of air displaced, vs the size of the port area, this will dictate the amount of Vent Mach Velocity there is.

The box the stoner had a 12 in (underpowered) - was the frequency response in the home of The Rock/HardRock Kik Drum ? That's what I originally was _convinced_ subs were installed for........... then I got online, an saw cats spendin $15,000 to listen to trains go by, airplanes take off, all manner of things not musical. Not a dam thing wrong with that, I have drumsets & guitars everywhere - I get it. Me, I want the kick to punch me forward - within reason (not forgetting mid bass) - and a clear (and too loud) front stage. I build all the boxs for my cars, based on what I thought I knew - and they don't suk, but I wonder if every/most channels are LOUD, and I need to try another philosophy ? Not in anyway dissin any channel or what anybod is into -_have at it_ , but I found I realy dig thumpin around in my wagons - an I wana learn. L & S here as well. R.B.G. *ManorCreep.com*

I love stupid punch subs, feeling that kick is the best. Some music is recorded with little to no bass or bass at reduced levels. I use a bass knob to turn up some channels/music types to get extra bass out of them. However, you need a good subwoofer box bandwidth to be able to play low bass and high bass.
I never understood why you can't go faster than light - until now!
