Just designed a ported box for them, but I'm chasing more sq. thinking of running them sealed, just not sure what volume. can u invert for a sealed box to keep soft parts cooler?

I prefer the narrow port personally. I find that the box does not have to be as large and for daily music it sounds much better.

I was told to get a sub that is atleast 12", designed for sealed enclosure and has RMS power of 1500W or you are going to be disappointed. And they were 100% correct. I got Alpine SWR-1542D ( on paper is better in sealed box), a 15" with RMS power of 750W. Built a box to spec and I was 90% disappointed. Everything below 40hz dropped off very quickly and even in the 40-80hz range was just not bunchy enough for me and I don't even like super loud bass. I rarely listen music over 85-95db.

i'm an addict for low range extension, my biggest gripe is that all these prefab boxes are designed to peak at ~32-35hz. been strongly considering back n forth between a single brahma 15 in a sealed box, or a ported box tuned to target 25hz. zero idea what the practical solution will be yet.

This helped. Thanks. Moved amp 5k to 7k. Current subs 4k peak but amp does 8k+ Was debating getting 2 higher rated subs 2.0 cu ft. Each. Current subs recommended enclosure 1.5- 2.75. current box 1.7 cu ft each. Leaning toward adding a 3rd 1.5 each running inverted. Drops load to .67 ohm so more amp power too.

Hey i thought about doing sealed i had 2 12s ported but wanted to go maybe to 2 18s sealed. The Stereo Integrity HT18s. I what do you think about this? I want to be louder than the setup i have but i want accurateness too. This is the space i have to work with in my 2007 chevy impala 36W 17H 40D. Do you think i can make it work? This is gonna be my first attempt to make a box and i feel like sealed would be easier

I'm gonna take my back seats out of my truck and get big ported box built for whichever but sure if I jus run 2 2500w 15s ported in my truck it should slam pretty hard. I'm trying to do a 150 plus atleast lol but jus want that sucker to jus wham and breathe lol

This would've been way way louder if the DSP was setup correctly. With how we are running a JL amp as a 12 channel DSP we forgot to reverse the polarity on every other channel of the bass outputs. What that equates to is the back 12 subs moving one way then the middle 12 moving the other way and then the front 12 moving the same as the back.... Basically 12 6.5s in a box way way to big. If we would've noticed that we missed it in the software it would've done well into the low 160s

nice work,do you know anyone that does designs these days for money ? im bored with what i have even though it digs down low,i have a 2 door 05 blazer totally sound deadened like over a hundred pounds of deadener with two X 12's with a 8 inch aero port it hits super low and loud,i also have a 18 inch nsv4 in my closet,i wouldnt mind talking with someone about doing something new,maybe something more windy if possible,life is flying by you know so hey,why not,im a old school basshead and i really like the idea of new designed enclosures like the tap horn or paraflex or whatever its called,one of my favorite boxes was a bandpass with two 12's back in the day,and it had a sealed side on the bottom and then the upper part came up a little over a foot or so with a removable lid that had a 6 inch piece of pvc dead center,it played amazing on all types of music but when i popped in a bass cd like bass 305 or something omg it came alive so yea anybody doing anything holler back ok.thanks

In choosing a sub, the first thing is finding the useable space for a size of a box. You may end up choosing a bigger sub, only to restrict its potential. A well matched sub to its type of box and size is related to its EBP. It's called Efficiency Bandwidth Product. The specs that come from the manufacturers are suggestions. Sadly in ported box, the perceived loud box could be what's really called misaligned box tuning. Get the speaker design book by Vance Dickason.

If you change a number of variables at the same time, the integrity of your test is comromised. The speaker type and number cannot be changed if the variable is box type.

So you want to tune your system with the windows down to sound loud outside the car?
@dylanhall1588
@dylanhall1588 3 ай бұрын
So ive always heard that adjusting the rear chamber tuning frequency will change the front chamber tuning frequency and vice versa. How would one predict this to reach a plan to build a baseline (prior to fine tuning through testing)? Or just use a generic port length calculator to find innitial port length for each chamber assuming the are not correlated?
@asdfghjkl1755
@asdfghjkl1755 3 ай бұрын
Depending on the speaker type, assuming that the cone can handle the power closed box sub will be able to handle more power at low frequencies due to better Xmax response. Also you can tune frequency response via DSP, but you can't tune impulse response, which is always way better on closed box.

Hmmm..... but my resonant frequency changes when my windows are rolled up or down and how many of them are rolled up or down right? See currently i have two 15s in a much too small box with a large port that is sitting in the back seat of my car. All windows up and my output falls off around 28hz.(all windows down is about the same) But with just my back windows down my output doesnt fall off till about 22hz 🔥💪 But this box is really bad. My subs are ripping it apart. Im about to build a new box to replace it but cant figure out how to account for my cabin airspace/cabin gain, especially trying to consider the windows!(which i really want to do and get right after seeing just how much of a difference rolling my back windows down, ~24hz is literally over twice as loud than windows up lol, i need this power across all frequencies 😅)

Exactly my thinking. Two 500 watt 12's sealed powered by a 1000 watt amp should be superior to one 500 watt 12 on 500 watts taking up the same space ported. I plan on doing 9 12's sealed in my civic on 8K this year.

Cool video, is there a certain distance you should keep your port away from like the door or loading wall? I have a 4" aero port and heard it shoukd be atleast the distance of how big your port is or double
@bailey2517
@bailey2517 3 ай бұрын
TDLR: more than 1 inch away. Actually you can slightly lower the tuning frequency of your port if you push the port a specific distance from the loading wall (you rear hatch, for example). It will cause the wall to act as an extension of your port. Your port area needs to be equal to the 2-dimensional (surface) area, of the space that wraps around the area between the end of the port and the rear hatch (its basically the same shape as your port, a "folded rectangle" similar in shape to a head-band). hang with me, I'm trying to explain this the best i can. I wish i could post a drawing lol. So your port has a diameter of 4", and you need to figure out the surface area of the rectangle that would wrap around that area. The longer side of that rectangle is equal to the circumference of your port... 4*pi = 12.57 and the other side of that rectangle is equal to the distance your port is from the rear hatch. Lets call that distance "x" ... so the equation is 4*pi*x = port area. Just change the "4" to whatever the diameter of your port is. So: 4*π*x = πr^2 4*π*x = π(2)^2 4*π*x = π*4 4*π*x = 12.57 divide both sides by 4 π*x = π divide both sides by pi x = 1 so the port should be 1 inch from the loading wall. but 1 inch is exactly 25% of your port diameter... and actually, this scales linearly no matter how big your aero-port is. An 8" port needs to be 2" from the wall. A 20" port needs to be 5" from the wall. etc... so actually the real answer is you just *divide the port diameter by 4* :)

@bailey2517 cool I always like learning about car audio and how it's alot of math to find and determine what you need. So 1" from my door is how close my port should be firing off my door? I have it now about 4" away givevor take but seems my subs are suffering in the mid 30s up to 45hz. At 45hz sounds like it starts picking back up which I'm thinking I have something else going on. Been thinking it could be jus the way my box and subs are performing in my full size 4 door truck but around 35hz to 45hz I can put my hand on the subs and feel them barley moving but only certain frequencys it will get really loud. Gonna re set all my gain ls from my line out converter and make sure I'm getting the biggest signal going to my sub amp and make sure nothing canceling out frequencys that's almost what it sounds like it's doing. But when those certain frequencys play it slams and hits hard. My box is tuned to 33hz and I have myblpf around 80hz or so and my subsonic is about 28hz. Gonna try and play around with it see if it changes anything by moving my box around. But what's weird is if i play single test tones like 33hz 34hz 35hz all the way to 65hz it will play and hit them. But when I play a sweep from 30hz to 40hz to starts good then 35hz to 40hz its like the bass jus falls off then will start picking up in mid 40hz range. My box is only like 1.4cu net with 2 kicker q class 8s. But Gonna build another ported box as big as I can fit which will I believe be about 2.5cu maybe 2.7cu net and gonna run either 3 sundown x8s or 3 b2 audio rampage v2 8s on 3.5k amp. Should get little louder lol

Yeah the last minute wraps it up. you can just design your 4th order and tune it into your whole car. with a closed window its a bit like 6th order in case you put it in the trunk. with opened windows you can simulate it as a 8th order bandpass. Actually its all just a tline in basics terms. just draw your line with the same/constant port area and see what wavelength you can hit. this will be a fundamental outta your system. ez hitting 20hz that way.
@byo4648
@byo4648 3 ай бұрын
Just be careful you give enough speaker loading. aka enough port area through your line of wave path way (portlength). A horn is basically just a port without additional mass loading. so in case u design your line all through until your opened window, u gotta simulate how much u will hit that tone. if its badly designed you bottom out, bcs there is not enough air reaching the speaker. regardless, space is the factor. just dont overpower the driver and u wont bottom out.... or maybe use less speakercones... I occasionally built a semi t-line for my car, by giving it a line of 1,80m. thou at halfway, the horn/port way gets halved in its area and you gain other of "reflective" line of 0,9m. calculating 0,9+1,80m u get 2,7meters. 344m/s air velocity divided by 2,7meters is about 120hz. which, its 1/4 wavelength is about 30 hz. Funny enough hornresp simulated that 4 me
@byo4648
@byo4648 3 ай бұрын
Plus if u do ports that get too small vs the volume (aka wall to wall distances in all 3 dimensions) u end up getting many many reflections. you get low notes, but u end up gettin a lot of harmonic distortion, bcs of alllll those reflections. shit starts to sound less and less good, the smaller the port / the bigger the volume of your chamber. Just try to design your bandpass modells with the biggest ports possible. Those might sound better, and without a "hollow" sounding base.

Awesome video, I have 2 kicker q class 8s in a ported box an there in there smallest recommend volume of .66cu net per with 4" aero tuned to 33hz. It does sound good but know kicker subs like bigger box's. My frequencys sound like in the 40s on up my subs are playing much so I'm wondering if it's cuse I'm tuned so low or since I have a factory HU and using the wavetechDQ I need to set my parametric eq to a certain frequency to boost the signal around those 40hz and up ranges. I'm gonna eventually get 3 sundown x8 d2 subs and run them in a ported box that will be close to 2.5cu net for the 3 x8 subs. Could you maybe draw that up and see how much louder/deeper I might be over my current 1.3cu net ported box with my 2 kicker q class 8s in. Thanks alot👊

This is kind of what I been debating. I was thinking would it be better to run 2 subs in 2.5cu net volume ported or would 3 in that same volume be louder? I'm looking at running either 2 DD 2508G subs which can play in 1.25cu net per ported or my other option is running 3 sundown X8 v4 subs in 2.5cu net ported which would come out to around .82cu net per sub and the X8 say they can play in .75cu to 1cu net per. I want it to hit deep and hard I like lows but not really low low like I'm more into 33hz and up into mid 40hz range. So which setup you think would be my best option?
