What a good lectures about blue light Doc. Also about sun rays exposure. Indeed, it is debatable whether blue light alone could damage your eyes or sun rays exposure alone could, it is also debatable. But unfortunately speaking from experience, if both are combine, eyesight will really be affected and defected. That's why moderation is important. Thanks.

I have blurry vision. My eyes are corrected to 20/20….had all the tests for glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinitis pigmentosis. Retinal scans are negative. I had cataract surgery in 04 but docs see no problem with the lenses. I have primary fibromyalgia. Found some articles correlating blurry vision with fm but they don’t know why. I use my iPhone more than the desk top. I take a lot of vitamins including antioxidants. All distances…close up, midrange, long ,depth and peripheral vision are affected. I’m 84. Any ideas?

I bought an BenQ GW2480 Monitor (24") 1080p. It's an IPS Display which means no eye fatigue for finding the sweet spot on Screen sharpness (almost all angles have a sharp Picture) which is one of the most important improvements over traditional LCD Displays. As well this BenQ Monitor is aproved of TUV Rheinland for flicker free and Low blue light. As well it Auto adjusts brightness (has an light sensor). Becauso of These Features I bought this Monitor, besides it was inexpensive and of an somewhat known brand. I already appreciate now within the first week of the low blue light and flicker free as well as brightness adjustment Features since it drastically improved the eye protection besides the benefits of the IPS Panel. Low blue light is set to minus 50% and brightness is drastically reduced as well in order to not force the eyes. I even take off glasses which I would have never done before. There is an Asus Monitor having These Features as well while other Mayor brands dont have These benefits. It has different Standard modes as well but those have to me an blinding sense effect since they are to bright while (probably) not filtering out the blue light - normal, gaming, movie, etc mode.As well there is an red light filter and an green light filter but those seem to be for Special needed people (it distorts normal colours when turned on). Blue light filter seems not to distort normal Colors.Buy a proper Monitor instead of wearing coloured glasses.Till now the Monitor is Holding up very well and it was well worth the Investment.

When I heard blue blockers were available, I went to the optician and had a couple pair of plain lenses custom made, with AR, UV 400 protection and blue light blockers. Then I heard that computer glasses should have a small magnification. I asked my opthamologist he said Okay So, I requested two additional pair made like readers with 1.50x They told me that I need a Rx if I wanted readers made. So, I asked the optometrist and he gave me an Rx and I had two more pairs made with the same specifications for computer use. Then I heard you say the magnification should be slightly off to decrease eye fatigue. I'm too exhausted dealing with the bureaucracy. These will have to do for now! Thanks, for your informative and up to date, videos!

Honestly, your computer magnification with all the protection should continue to work great for you. I just know of some computer glasses using decentered optics to reduce eyestrain via induced prism. Some people seem to like it, including myself.

Dear eye doc, a request for a future video; Could you please do a video on Corneal Arcus? In my own case I am 35 but I have had it since mid-late 20s at least. It is quite severe, and aside from it making me look like I am 90years old it looks like it would interfere with vision if it got any worse. I recently had blood lipid evaluation and it is apparently excellent, way above baseline ideals. So why do I have it and no one else in my family? Is there anything in my diet that could be causing it, are there any ways to reduce it, and is it something to get worried about in terms of either eye or full body health? thanks in advance

Some lenses such as Transitions or photogrey lenses block UV and block about 20% blue light. I am not sure what wavelengths though. I should look into that. Regular UV protection may have some small percent but I am unsure. May depend on the brand and lens.

I just found out your amazing channel and have a burning question. I was demonstrated a 1 Watt 445 nm blue laser. I was shown how it burns a few things; and I watched the dot of the laser in bright daylight from about one meter distance about three sessions 15 seconds each. I quickly realized that something is wrong; and discontinued any further observation. I am now severely concerned that this exposure might have damaged my cornea or retina even. Is this a meaningful concern?

Hi Dr. Thank you very much for the informative video. I do have a question regarding blue light: Back at home i have LED bulbs in my room that i have set blue & purple when ever i am in my room playing video games or working. For me i thought it was a cool display for my room but now that i watched this video I am scared lol. Is it dangerous to be surrounded in these types of lights? I have them on for about 2-4 hours and i had them for a year now. I recently got Keratoconus and my eyes became very sensitive to bright lights. I do have eyeglasses that hav the "protective" film for electronic devices. Any advice?

My latest prescription glasses has blue light blocking (Essilor Crizal Prevencia) that my optician added at no cost. As you said, it has a light yellow tint which is sometimes annoying. I found no real difference on overall comfort so I am not sure I will ask that for the next ones. The most debatable link is with eye strain. As you said, the most common factor is forced eye convergence. I was subject to eye strain when with prescription no longer matched the evolution of my sight (that happened a lot in recent years for me) so it had nothing to do with blue light. I remain skeptical that it is a big risk to be considered. UV light, for sure, it is ionizing radiation. Blue light, not so much.

I'm curious about your opinion on one particular aspect of blue light. From what I understand, the varying refractive indices across the visible spectrum results in a fair amount of longitudinal chromatic aberration within the eye. Do you think that because blue light is myopically defocused (if focusing on almost any other color), it can contribute to eye strain? I imagine that this would only really occur when staring at a computer screen when the eye is trying to focus on different colors up close, and is being bombarded with some amount of blue light constantly in the edges of text or images. Or, is this not really an issue regarding eye strain? Thoughts?
@DoctorEyeHealth

I think its a good theory and perhaps possible. I am not sure if there is any proof of it but I think its a good theory. If I am not mistaken...(its getting late for me) Assuming the focal plane was equal without accommodative flux...then the blue light rays would focus slightly behind the retina...almost driving a need to overfocus.

re Circadian Rhythms: one of the things you were routine hear from sleep specialists (especially for people with circardian disorders) is to make sure you get exposed to bright light immediately upon awakening (if I recall correctly that specific 480nm wavelength is critical). So, I guess my question in light of this is: do we want to be blocking blue light during the first few hours of the day, and could it possibly weaken a persons circadian rhythm.

@@DoctorEyeHealth so check this out doc. Although it appears to be in Joules per cm2, and not meters squared. I need to read that paper you mentioned in the British Eye Journal and see if I can make sense of some of the data on this website. There other cool thing about Fluxometer is that they have spectro'd all kinds of stuff. Phones, tablets, various blue blocking filter materials, home lighting products, you name it. First and foremost Joseph I'd like to say thanks for the wealth of information provided within this hr of information and taking your personal time to provide this information. ($0 Co pay here people 😉) People this is more than worth an HR of your time so please watch this in it's entirety for the best benefit and be patient as you never know how this may impact your eye health or a loved one. I appreciate all of the scientific information as well as the citation of information for doing additional studying myself personally as I do have a heavy biology background but currently I am in the corporate I.T world and I spend beyond 9 hrs per day in front of high resolution displays with high Nits of brightness more often than not. I am near-sighted (myopia) currently my contact lens setup is B&L Bio true for my daily disposable which work very well because naturally given my career I blink less and always have a screen of sorts nearby(sad I know) and I also have crazy light sensitivity which doesn't help(transitions contacts on order as well by the way) I have found the use of darker yellow lenses with a bit of plus power i.e Gunnar glasses and I even have a pair of z87 rated safety glasses with yellow lenses that also have a bit of plus power make a huge difference for me personally. Eye strain is no joke and if anyone is in a similar field especially doing very focussed work any coding, terminal work etc... Check out Joseph's videos on both the eye massages as well as doing hot and cold compresses it will really help if you devote the time to it and take care of your eyes, oddly enough naturally I've always done similar massages and again it works. Something not mentioned that I know some people cannot tolerate it but again these are MY personal experiences, however beta carotene although many limited studies say otherwise works well for me ....🥕may sound like nonsense but I can definitely a difference when increasing my beta carotene intake. I am exploring lutein and other eye vitamins as well too and looking forward to any videos of the various ones out here you've experienced personally Joseph as well as I've been seeing more drops on the market too both preserved and non preserved that I hope you'd review to get your take on. Also another helpful tool for those of you which is all of you using any digital device....as someone who is in the I.t field many are unaware that their Samsung, apple, htc, etc... All the major brand of smart phone as well as computer manufacturers HAVE OPTIONS EVEN BUILT INTO THE SOFTWARE as far as built in blue light filters ...apple's IOS operating system has a built in blue light filters called "night shift" it is also built into the software of Apple's MAC OS software PLEASE USE THEM it will cancel majority of the blue light emitted from the device and is very significant and is clutch when you don't or can't remember to throw on your Blue 🔵 blockers 👓 If you'd like some product review suggestions Joseph or some solid information from the I t world on how this exact thing is addressed just let me know let me know I have a few in mind. Great work and keep the videos coming we all have two eyes that we need to take care of for life! Now it's time to go study in the name of Eye Health🤤 #healthiswealth

What do you think about the extremely bright blue LED headlights many new cars use, even in daylight! I find them absolutely blinding (and i have heard at least one opthamologist say they are destructive to the macula, and can lead to macular degeneration in the eyes of the beholders.

I can chime in on this one all of your iPads and Android devices of current will have built in blue light filters within the respective app be it the I books app on Apple devices or Google books or the Kindle app on all platforms these ALL have built in blue light filters and different color tones that are much softer and easier on the eyes.

Blue is also the color which the eye has the most problems focusing. Possibly because the only blue things in our evolution were the sky, so there was no evolutionary advantage to treating it specially. I use a sepia background in Kindle and blue light "blockers" on the electronics. The new phones & tablets all offer that.

I was recently diagnosed with dry eyes. and my eye doctor prescribed me blue light and sunlight protective glass and eye drops(natural tear). I bought the glasses and they have AR from what I gathered from your videos. The store keeper I bought the glasses from specifically warned me to not get it in contact with water. and to only clean it using the piece of clothing he provided(which I doubt are micro fibers bc they wouldn't clean as good) When I was looking for other methods all I could find has water involved. What I'm asking is is there any harm in using water to clean my glasses?

Eye glass? You mean your current glasses? You would need a spectrometer of some kind, which are usually very expensive. there are cheap kinda gimmicky tester strips but I am unsure how accurate they are.

Very interesting Sire. Today it is not often to see these “Gods in White“ are exposing themselfs on the internet adressing real health themes but medics are mostly sales agents for pharmaceutical companies (thats a real problem in Canada). I wonder how much damage these tablets are causing to the eye although they improved a lot regards IPS screens but I have found smaller low resolution non IPS screens like on older netbooks 10 to 13“ screens are the worst possible for eye fatigue. For me at least. An 7 to 8“ IPS tablet does not nearly as much give me fatigue as older lcd screens used to do. I consider the IPS technology as the single mayor improvement on eye protection since it aliviates the stare to the screen trying to find constantly the sweet spot. Considered on an tablet I normally just look at the screen 60% of the time only since I use it for listening mayorly like in this video the info comes from listening and not staring constantly at the doctor who speaks. What about the old CRT monitors? They shoot electrons onto the heavy glass and are constantly magnetized. Not to speak of the flickering of very early models. On most old CRT monitors I had an screen protector in front of it. They must have damaged the eyes incredible much. Can you elaborate on that as well? I wouldnt be surprised if I lost my eye strengt on these CRT monitors and on smallish lcd displays low resolution. I use glasses only for driving long distance and on front of the PC, not in daily life. I read glasses are needed because the muscles in the eye fatigue and so focusing and adjusting isnot working anymore which then glasses have to offset. Making eye muscle exercise they say help like looking in all directons of the circle up down sideways of an imaginary clock but how to strenghten far and near muscles? Big screens are IMHO alleviating the eye fatigue considerably.

Dr. Ellen, I had a tragedy related with blue light. In August, 2019, I got 9 times blue light facial acne treatment in Seattle Sun Tan Light Spa, eight of nine times their working staff forgot to give me eye goggle . After that my left eye suddenly lost most of vision, barely could see anything and right eye vision dropped sharply. Medical report says "Age related (WE DON'T HAVE THIS PATIENT PRIOR MED DOCUMENT, CAN'T STATE IT IS CAUSED BY BLUE LIGHT, EVEN THERE ARE SUCH POSSIBILITY) combined form cataract, bilateral Meibomian gland dysfunction left eye, upper and lower eyelids Meibomian gland dysfunction right eye, upper and lower eyelids Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, not specified as Sjogren's, bilateral Macular pucker, left' In Jan, 2020, processed cataract surgery for both eyes, now vision is worse day by day, new report says, "Secondary cataract obscuring vision, left Secondary cataract obscuring vision, right.Cystoid macular edema, bilateral" . now i can't work, read, drive, cooking, etc., my both eyes are painful every minute and every second, just like eyeball were dig out and hollows left there and pain are trapped there. Maybe this is a good example to illustrate how blue light damage your eyes.

The blue light can be less harmful to human eye maybe becouse its dispersed and kinda polarized.. its not direct light. Maybe thats why. Maybe becouse we rarely staring into the sky for 6hours a day... better protect than regret....

Yellow light exists, yes, but we have no receptors for it. Our brains extrapolate yellow from the ratio of blue:green in what we do see. Which means "yellow" is subjective, we may all see it a little differently.

I was going to ask my eye doc about this when i went in. I don't have time to watch the entire right now. Is it possible for blue light to be one cause of eye floaters? I want to blame something for them, besides Obama. I might ask the doc about eye wear for computers, since computer industry is my career. I also remember when i was a kid that everyone was told to stay away from CRT TVs. And i repaired some computer devices when I was younger for fun, and some CRTs said caution, emit xray

Floaters can indicate a problem but normally they come from aging. They can sometimes be removed with a laser (non-intrusively) or by a vitreous fluid removal and replacement. (Intrusive but should be painless and low risk.) You can only find out by seeing a GOOD eye professional, often a retinologist or other specialist. Generally, they are just a nuisance and can be treated.
