What’s Bluesky doing that’s fundamentally different that what twitter is doing? Is the only benefit over twitter that Bluesky is a fresh start?

It's Twitter but not run by Elon. And a few other technical details.

For me the biggest and most important difference is the power users are given over their own experience. Third party developers are already building tools to choose your own timeline algorithm. Content moderation is another area where the user has way more say than a centralized app like Twitter. And at least for now it’s a much more pleasant environment. And the control I have as a user makes me feel like I’ll be able to keep it that way.

Mastodon's biggest problem is there's nobody worth following. I'm sure if you really look you'll find something but I found it to be a lot of work even using hash tags to find stuff I'm interested in. Honestly groups is where it's at. I also believe that's what is keeping Facebook relevant. They also need to make sure their DM feature works unlike tiktok where it's a disaster.

For finding people I think "roles" (like in Discord servers) would be interesting. Kinda like tags you add to your profile that point to stuff/communities you like/are part of. Then searching for ppl with x & y & z tags would be a nice way to filter down results?

I kinda like how Mastodon search works. 1. When you search for a word, the search algorithm looks for toots that you have favorited, boosted, or replied to. If you haven't engaged with a toot in any of these ways, it won't be displayed in the search results. 2. The hashtag system is also great if you don't want your toot to be visible to everyone. Only if your toot includes a hashtag will the search algorithm display it. This gives you more control over who can see your content on the platform.

Watching this in December of 2023, and I just wanted to say that out of the 3 X competitors (Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky), Threads seems to be doing the best, solely because of the number of people who are active on there. Bluesky seems like a simpler and easier version of Mastodon, but it's pretty dead.

I'm more curious what Bluesky's plan for moderation is. As the platform grows, the likelihood of trolls/bad actors increases. Also what about the plans for being able to self-host federated servers? Also what is the business model for this platform? How will it avoid what Cory Doctorow calls "enshittification" as the demand for revenue leads to increasingly worse user experience? I'm all for abandoning Twitter's cesspool, but jumping into another billionaire's spiffy new platform seems like a bad plan.

I understand that the community will be able to moderate messages and users. for example, an interest group could tag messages that they regard as offensive, and if you trust that group's moderation, you could subscribe to their moderation and the offending messages/users would be filtered out. there are obvious problems with this: 1. who has the time and the resources to moderate an entire social media site, and why would they want to? 2. if it's too much of a free for all, just about every message could be labelled hate speech by someone

There is also a waiting list, and I believe they're inviting about 1000 people per week. The waiting list is just really big (1 million+ people!)

Mastadon had like a mass data leak (fortunetly i never signed up), so I've just been really careful about new apps. The fact that its through invites is a huge turn off because even if I get in there will be nobody to follow, so yeah I really don't see a point in joining until its out of closed beta

Mastadon is federafe anyway. I'm prettt sure it runs an XMPP architecture. So anyone making an account would probably benefit from exercising caution when picking a password.

I understand the hashtags not being there at the moment due to spam, however a lot of things on social require hashtags such as TV shows, radio shows you may be watching or listening to whiich creates a network for people to find the same thing at the time. Do you think hashtags will appear on here once they have tools in place to reduce spam maybe, I just feel it's kinda important for social media now 😊

Apparently, the waiting list is over 1 million+ people (with 1,000 folks per week being invited currently). The quickest way to get an invite is to find an individual user who has invite codes. Each user gets one invite code for every two weeks they're on the app.

Following hashtags has worked well for me in Mastodon. I haven't noticed any spam issues, and I find the wider "net" of a hashtag more interesting than posts from the same handful of people I'd get with only following accounts. I do follow some user accounts, but that's not where most of my Mastodon feed comes from
