This is interesting because I have ADHD and cannot get any work done with people around. Not because I am extremely social but because I get distracted. Now doing housework is a different story. I NEED that other person for accountability and motivation!

Same. If someone moves in their seat, drinks a beverage or walks out of the door I get that squirrel-like effect. I would need blinders and noice cancelling headphones...lol.

That is interesting! I think back to when I’ve had good friends come by for working sessions, and we always end up chatting more than working. 😂 If they’re a coworker or I’m in an environment with people I don’t know (library, etc), then I can be more productive. Oh yes, housework is infinitely better with someone around! I saw someone in a local FB group ask if anyone wanted to become house chore partners in cleaning each other’s. I thought that was a genius idea! 💡

Blinders and noise cancelling headphones are key! I eventually learned that when I wore big headphones instead of my AirPods (hidden by my hair), people would give me space when I needed to focus. I also loved finding a little nook away from my desk to get work done. I tried to create similar nooks in my home, but it never works bc I’m always too distracted by my surroundings / hobbies. 😅

I did this a lot in grad school but didn’t know there was a term for it! When alone, I’ve often used ‘work with me’ youtube videos, where folks film themselves working in a calm, aesthetically pleasing environment. And this is actually how I discovered fountain pens! I saw a person using an interesting pen in one of the videos and went on a quest to figure out what they were writing with. Now I’m hooked on the fountain pen hobby! Anyhow, great video- nice to have a name for this!

Yes!! After I heard someone reference it, it resonated so quickly for me to and I was able to recall many examples of how it helped me. I didn't know about "work with me" videos while I was studying, but I can see how they would have been really helpful to keep on in the background. It's so fun that you discovered fountain pens this way, I think my discovery was similar - I watched a lot of AmandaRachLee videos during my bullet journalling phase and I remember she did a video on fountain pens and I've been intrigued ever since! Thanks for stopping by and for leaving a comment. ☺️ I appreciate you!

This is a fascinating concept. As someone who is taking classes remotely, I find myself less motivated to complete tasks than if I was in person. Would you consider yourself an emotional extrovert? I identify as one, because although I need space to reset myself, I find that I’m highly tuned into what the energy in the room is, and tend to value group harmony over being the proverbial nail that sticks out. Group feelings of productiveness motivate me to being more productive out of the social reward of better community. I suppose this translates to being motivated to getting tasks done, because I fear being the only one in the room not caught up, or standing out in a bad way.

Thank you for thoughtful comment! Regarding being an emotional extrovert, I haven’t considered it before, but your prompt has got me thinking about it! 🤔Thank you! I agree that in some situations, I get motivated in group settings. Exercise classes or running groups come to mind! I was much more consistent with exercise when I had a group to keep me accountable. I also like feeling that sense of belonging in certain groups. I am most productive and motivated at work when I feel like a valued team member and have a strong sense of how I can contribute alongside my peers.

Very insightful and well-researched topic! I like this concept for tasks, accountability, and motivation. I think watching KZbin videos, listening to music, and having television as background noise like sports can be helpful! I am finding hourly schedules/schedules might not work for me. So this might be the reason I like that Diane in Denmark here on KZbin gives four self-care assignments one can choose from each week usually on her Friday videos but sometimes Monday, it is similar to a university course and creates accountability. I think I prefer talking planner videos over just showing planning. Kennedy from the channel Cozy K has video she did like this called weekly reset routine about a week ago. I also like KZbin workout videos like the channel up to the beat fit by Gina B and Leslie Sansone Walk at Home because it is like a workout class with talking.

Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful comment! I agree with you on making hourly schedules. I tried that once with my Google Calendar, and it did not work at all. I found I was terrible at estimating how long tasks would take me, and sometimes, I couldn’t focus on the task that I had scheduled in for that time slot. Now, I mainly use my vertical weekly to highlight meetings that I have with others so I don’t miss them (which has happened more than I care to admit, even with email notifications). Thank you for sharing a few other KZbin channels to check out! I love the idea of providing self-care assignments!

oh this explains why I cannot body double with anyone but my closest friends. I have some issues with being in groups and also wicked imposter syndrome around feeling inadequate that everyone else can focus but me, so if I don't know the person I'm doubling with then I can feel just... awful, from fear of being judged. I *like* body doubling with people I know who won't do that, but I cannot just drop myself in a random group of strangers and feel more focused. I just feel lesser

Thanks for taking the time to comment and sharing your experience and insights. 💗 It makes a lot of sense why body doubling with friends would be more successful. I can understand that trying to focus with a group of strangers would be challenging! It sounds like you’re aware of what you need to set yourself up for success and have found ways to adapt the strategy for your needs. I’ve realized after researching this more that body doubling doesn’t always work for me when I need to be focus. I’m also realizing that my needs change depending on the task, my mood, and (thanks to your insight!), my level of comfort in my environment.

This was a very interesting video. I guess I always had some music or just the TV on in the background working at home. During covid we were always on some zoom calls that when we weren't on the calls I enjoyed the silence and got through my work. Since then I work in a sparsely used office with about 15 people that come to the office daily and for the most part it is virtually working in silence. When other people come from other offices to ours they complain that its too quiet. This I guess is a true case of body doubling. I had never heard this term but I guess I've practiced it for some time. I'm a procrastinator for sure especially with processes I don't like or am not sure how to proceed. Sometimes I feel like I jump from thing to things because I always have so many things on my to do list. I'm trying to force myself to stick to the list so that I can actually feel accomplished.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your experiences. It sounds like you’ve found a way to adapt to your environment as it changes. Something I loved about the last office I worked in was the mix of lively and quiet environments. You could work in the common area with a coffee if you wanted some ambient noise, or you could find a quiet nook to focus without being disturbed. I liked that variety bc I get bored with my surroundings easily. At the same time, I have come to appreciate having a dedicated office space at home to get into “work mode”. Hard relate to having a long to-do list and jumping from thing to thing! I still struggle with this, but I’ve gotten slightly better over that years of trying to contain my to-do list. I always think I can do more in a day than is possible, and that sets me up for disappointment when I don’t get them all done. 😅

i just found your channel today and was inspired to buy a couple hobonichi planners, one for general life and one as a health tracker! i was wondering if you have a master list somewhere of all the products you use. i love your content but i'm like, "WHERE is that from!?!?!?! what IS that???" haha

Ohhhh, I love that idea. Thank you for the suggestion bc I can see how it’d be helpful information to include. I’d be happy to create a list of products I use. Are there any in particular that you’re really wanting to know about? Also! Which hobonichi planners did you end up getting for general life and a health tracker? So excited for you - I hope you have fun using them! 😍
