1 correction to your video: Yo-Yo is neither a company nor a group in ED, but a person. He's the main FM builder for ED (and a lot of times also helps other 3d party devs). You can see an interview of him in the DCS WW2 kickstarter video #4.

I have been using flight sims since 1980 although I have never been much into air combat sims. I did enjoy MS’ CFS2 in it’s day as it was for a while the best FS in existence. Mostly I used free flight mode but occasionally I’d get bored and shoot up a few huts on the beach. I am getting started with DCS now not with the idea of becoming some sort of desktop ace but just wanting to learn to fly these fine aircraft well. If I do eventually engage in some combat it will probably be in some easy mode which would bore you. I enjoy the experience of flight and I am not really all that competitive. I am also a gun collector and while I am highly abusive of paper targets I don’t get into competitive shooting either. I’m just an old guy with so~so eyesight with dreams of flying high performance machines. Thanks for the instructive video! :)

I run DCS without mods, I have it set to high but with HDR off as it kills my system! DCS is a CPU hog but it can be run with a basic GPU

Hi Smudge - this is a brilliantly informative video about DCS and a great orientation to the whole concept of the programme - I like your style as it works well! I've only become aware of DCS in the past week or two and have done loads of research to try to get my head around the whole concept and what it's all about but here you did it brilliantly especially such topics as TrackIR. I like your other videos from basic engine start to attacking with differing weapon systems. This model and concept is the sort of simulator that attracts me greatly and I may well migrate from Microsoft FSX as DCS looks top drawer and has so much going for it. Good videos. I'm curious about the type of DRM used in DCS World. I have Black Shark 2 and A-10 bought separately but they used limited activation system that I find very annoying. Is the limited DRM still used for the Steam version? I was going to get DCS World when it first appeared on Steam along with other older titles from Eagle Dynamics but I was discouraged by the warning of the restrictive third party DRM on their descriptions. I just saw F-86 Sabre module and that got me interested again(I have a soft spot for F-86s). I don't see any warning about another DRM though so I'm wondering if they have ditched it.

They used to use starforce? That's was bloody awful, I'm not sure what they use now. You get 10 activations, but you can deactivate a activation to reclaim it. So if your going to change computer deactivate first then you still have 10. I have no idea what Steam uses? It's probably VAC I do everything through the DCS website version.

504smudge Yes, it was pretty annoying because it made buying one of their games felt like walking on eggshells. I thought it would be easy avoiding using the 10 activations but as in A-10 case I already used up nearly half of it in no time at all. I already used two activations for my desktop and and laptop but adding RAM to the laptop required another one while something must've changed in my desktop that I'm not aware of that required one more activation. My laptop has been acting up these days and I'm in the process of upgrading my desktop so they are not very conducive for Starforce-based games. I am downloading the DCS World atm but any presence of Starforce will hinder me from purchasing their modules/DLCs.

Even tho starforce is a paid, ED have always been really good in the past of sorting out activations. If you run out and have an explanation they will usually give you some more

This is updated version of Starforce called StarForce ProActive and it is no more working like worm in computer. When you use all 10 activations, you will get automatically new one after one month.

In all honesty, MS flight sim can give you this and much, much more. I've downloaded all those Aircraft and even more through simvation as well as scenery. The only thing that it does have going for it is the combat element.

Anthony Franken in all honesty your completely and utterly wrong, sure the planes may be in MS flight, but they will never get close to the ‘feel’ of flight in DCS, the physics and flight characteristics are night and day.. honestly try the DCS TF51 it’s free... you’d never want to fly MS again

DCS World is just the best flight sim on the market today. We're talking about an "amateur" flight sim (not military pilot education sim, although it doesn't fall short in most areas) available at Steam (and other places too). Being somewhat of a novice compared to many DCS pro's out there, I can just say to all you guys looking for a fantastic military simulator (there's ground/naval vehicles available to use too), don't look no further. This is the shit. There's no limit to what you can connect in terms of hardware (flightsticks, panels, eye tracking/VR equipment), and it is a steep learning curve, but it's fun and realistic from start. If you put a serious amount of hours into it'll blow you away! Just be aware of the system specs; to get it to look and perform really good at high res and high FPS you'll need serious hardware. But if you got it, it looks amazing! And the way the developers and users keep evolving and updating the game is great too. This is heaven, in both ways...

Thanks for the video, very informative. I've always wanted to give flight sims a try but always been scared to buy one due to the worry I might not enjoy them. I love planes and I've enjoyed games like war thunder, although not quite in detail as an actual flight sim but since this one is free I think I'll give it a go. I'll go ahead and subscribe. Small correction, the SU-25 in FC3 is SU-25A not the SU-25T. I actually really like the SU-25A (well I love both).

well FC3 did come with both the SU-25T and SU-25A, then only decided to give the T away with DCS world for free, but initially it was part of the module.

504smudge Ah really? Didn't know that. Though I did have FC 2 but can't remember which Su-25 came with it. I guess it is semantics then, but worth mentioning that if you get FC3 (or the stand-alone Su-25 DLC) it is the Su-25A.

it's is a good point.. The SU-25T actually came with the first version of Flaming Cliffs, but it's nothing like what we have now! they have made so many advances with the FM and visuals.. got to love ED for pushing the limits of a combat flight sim from the early 2000s

504smudge The Su-25 was the what got me to love the series. I don't even remember which version it was, could have been the first FC, because I also played around with Lock-On back in the day. I just remember how cool the TV targeting was at the time and watching my missiles all the way to the target (usually right before I took a stinger from God knows where). Keep up the good work.

Just an unknown bug mate, restarted the game and they were all back, I have 2 joysticks, pedals track IR and a 360 controller plugged in!

Hi, Free is only TF-51D and SU-25T. All other are payware.

S.W.A.T Team well one of the most dangerous aircraft is a reconnaissance aircraft! Stopping the enemy gaining intel on your positions is vital.. in DCS the TF51 kinda fits that role

Haha, the most difficult thing to land on 3 points is find the right attitude. If you have too high pitch, then you touch tailwheel first which causes damn unpleasantly unbalanced behaving :D

the tf-51 is a trainer aircraft without guns, and I think they also have the L-39 Albatros jet trainer. I don't think you can get completly away from the military scenario though.

Look at Prepar3D, FSX is cheap but outdated and a performance hog and doesn't look as good, P3D is the best! but it takes a fair amount of $ in add ons...

Well, in this case, I have to recommend new X-plane. It is just Hi-tek flight sim for now. Pitty it has limited online capabilities now. Prepar3D and FSX are really outdated when you compare them with X-plane 11

Jaromír Anděl I disagree 100% FSX is dead, people need to quit making stuff for it and talking about it. X Plane just lost a major add on Dev, Orbx. If someone wants a realistic Sim experience they will most likely go to P3D and Get some Orbx Sceneries, some good airports from Flightbeam, Orbx, and others, then EZdok 2, Chase plane, A2A which are heavenly, PMDG, FSlabs, TDFI, and get very accurate flight models and systems. Then with P3D someone WILL DEFINITELY get way higher FPS at the same settings as X Plane 10 and 11(I get more than double), the only downside to P3D is it's 32 bit but all that does is prevent someone from using more than 4gb of ram, however X Plane is a performance hog for no reason whatsoever and uses well over 10+ GB of RAM because no one cares about management. Then there is FS Aerofly 2 and Orbx is possibly making a sim.

My computer specs. are HP G72 notebook pc, Pentium R duel-core CPU T4500 @ 2.30 GHz, 3.00 GB, 64-Bit OS, Windows 7 Home Premium, when I try to start it up I get the DCS World opening screen but then I get an error message that says" Windows can not start program.

Steven Conkle ok how much ram does the laptop have, and also what GPU, one thing to try is a repair, if you go to your start bar, the eagle dynamics, then launch Repair DCS, that will integrity check and fix and errors

You only get a few planes to start with! Try a quick mission with the TF51 or SU25

this old LockOn map sucks a bit after all those years, i wish they would improve this simulator with newer maps and other theatres like WW2 (perhaps english channel and germany) for P51 and FW190 planes. How many Players are flying this Online ? not very much i think. You explain nothing about the Multiplayer mode, why ?

Well we are soon to see the Nelis/Nevada map, and they are developing a Normandy Map for DCS WW2, the online community is actually very strong, there are numerous Online communities, I didn't look at the multiplayer aspect because that would have taken much longer to go over, and it's all community driven with dedicated servers running player made scenarios. If you try the game you'd see it's far from dead, and with the new modules in the works it's only going to get stronger.

Nice buy for someone who wants to try this simulator. Pitty the logitech is not using hi-tech sensors so it has much lower lifetime than other products like from Saitek or Thrusmaster. The good cheap start with good quality is also Defender Cobra which uses very good sensors with very good lifetime.

i do..you have a very good way of explaining it all,especially your comments during a dogfight. Your start up procedures are excelent too.You did briefly comment on the missión editor, i don't know if you're going to go more in depth on this or not. Anyway,as i commented in another post i now have COD,with the TF patch,but i beleive when work permits ill sit in the cockpit of the TF51 and try starting her up. "What is DCS World?" Becoming a crap (in latest years) in terms of respecting the real aircraft performances which pretends to want to be a good simulator. In game tests and data show another reality. Some 3rd party modules are still using SFM (simplified flight models) for years already and cost very much. DCS goes more and more down because the 3rd party modules are not professionally validated nor first of all built by professionals (people with good knowledge), so what could you expect? A growing pile of crap which costs more than it offers all around.
