What is Depth of Field & How to alter it for Dog Photography Portraits | WTF is DoF?!

We've already covered blurry backgrounds but we glossed over the details on what is depth of field, how to alter depth of field and what actually controls depth of field. Time to unpick those things today.
Depth of Field, otherwise known as "DoF" is a measure of how much of a photograph is in focus. You can set up shots to have a HUGE depth of field or a shallow depth of field, each serve a different purpose. Usually, portraits use a shallow depth of field, but aperture isn't the only control of it.
Hopefully, this video works through the main things to consider when looking at depth of field and photographing portraits, with a heavy weighting for dog photography.

Thanks for making this video. Couldn't help but notice that the measurements were off by a few centimeters, since the tape measure was laid out neither in a straight line or on a flat surface. Actually there are (free) mobile apps for DoF calculations. They can be really helpful.

The DoF calculations were from a DoF app. The measure was there for reference on subject placement only 👍

You'd get more of the dog 'in focus' with the 70-200 lens,since the aperture is 2.8 and the number is bigger! The 135mm has an aperture of 1.8, so the number is smaller and therefore less of the photo is in focus. Hope this helps :)

Each doubled distance gave you, what, about 3X depth increase for either given f-stop. That’s interesting info, too, in choosing a subject distance.

Thats a great video. I was shooting some black sheep today with 75mm lens at f2.8 and the images turned out to be not so in focus, only parts of the sheeps face would be in focus. I know realize I was way too close to their faces...
