‘“Just woke up’ from doing this for years”. I think I am dissociating and have been depersonalised for 8 years age 16-25 and I’m going to see a therapist soon. I remember once a few years ago when I was 21 waking up and feeling like oh shit I’m back and it last for an hour or two. I want to feel like I should again.

Also abandonment and emotional abuse. I feel like that's something that really needs to be acknowledged. I didn't know I was disassociating until in recent times and during that time I've been trying to heal myself. I was never spanked really, authoritarian parenting was not administered, but I did have a lot of emotional neglect and verbal abuse. As a result I started to protect myself by disassociating and disconnecting from myself and apparently I had been that way since I was seven years old. This is the first time I've ever felt alive in a long time ever since I started to work on specifically my disassociation. As a forewarning anyone else, it's going to be a long, hard and rocky road, but a worthwhile one. It's going to take many many years but you're going to get there and you're going to feel the progress for every step of the way. You might have times where you feel worse but just keep moving forward and know everything is going to be okay as long as you keep moving forward

@@HillbillyYEEHAAas someone who has experience all forms of abuse and neglect The sexual is the one that has done the most damaging to my life. Also the reason why dissociation is used as terms of physical and sexual abuse and not emotional is because you are in physical danger and you can’t physically remove yourself from it. The body is in physical pain and to survive that you dissociate to numb the pain. I don’t think it’s right to say that it’s the same as dissociation from emotional abuse.

Yeah but it's also important to add that it's only actual dissociation when triggered by something like a memory or feeling immediate danger. Many people space out and daydream and those situations are described the same way, but are different That's how my therapist explained that to me atleast

It's weird, I recall doing this sometimes as a kid just out of the blue, no trigger, just a sudden realization that I am an organ in a skull piloting a meat suit and not, like, the center of my own universe. I don't have any kind of those physical childhood traumas, but I might mention this to my therapist 🤔

Note that this isn't just related to trauma and happens to me specifically when I'm waiting in cues or other completely random events or times that are trivial and benign. You're not unique if you're experiencing disassociation in normal life. Another common theme is the come-down from stimulants and even heavy caffeine use.

You're accurate in your statement except for two things. The group causes not physical or sexual. The root cause is trauma. If any kind it can be emotional. It could be any kind of trauma that causes a person to have a reaction where they disassociate. I know this is a fact because I've never really had physical or sexual abuse in my life to me, but I've had other types of abuse that have caused severe disassociation as a coping mechanism and I can tell you it's not a pleasant experience. It was a result of being a part of a narcissist family. Where I was manipulated and used in such a way disrespected and not had boundaries because I was codependent and unable to stand up for myself and say no and not be used and have to be on standby for the other person if everyone need 24 hours a day and not live my own life. When I'm able to get away and then actually get my own life in order guilt trips, smear campaigns and then a feeling of like I owe something to the person who was abusive tries to find a way back into my life and then I end up returning back to that situation. I guess the physical presence of some being in some around somebody that's like that with emotional trauma is part of the experience if you want to say that. But I would say that this is association is a coping mechanism and listening to music is a way to cope that I find can bring me back to reality through the lyrics and mood change of the music. But sometimes when you disassociate it's really hard to come back from that. And it's more of an explanation than just physical or sexual abuse because it's not just those types of abuse. It can be anything that causes severe trauma on a sustained basis like in my experience

I never did at the time, in my marriage, see myself as I battered wife. I was though and years later I know the only way I'd coped with it was to switch off. Don't know if the switching off stopped me from understanding I was being abused.
