Please how do you really think we can solve this plastics problem? It’s all very well for wealthy countries like America to achieve the Earth Day vision. For obvious reasons you did not mention sub Saharan Africa as signed up even though we constitute a huge portion of the Earth, and our large population use a lot of plastics. Most of our imported goods come in plastic wrapping. Plastic has replaced metal tins in a lot of previously tinned foods coming from Earth Day supporters - Europe, America and China. All toiletries and cosmetics come in plastic bottles. 99% of drinking water and sodas come in plastic bottles. Paper and cardboard require the felling of trees to be produced - so that could cause desertification. Firstly the countries signing up to Earth Day must show sincerity and stop exporting their goods to us in plastic packaging. Technologically advanced countries must find practical alternatives especially for solving this problem in countries with poor economies.

Agreed - There is much that countries, such as America, can do to reduce their plastic waste but, also, their influence on wider supply chains. It is lamentable that, in a move to reduce the weight and, hence, carbon emissions in transportation, plastic containers have replaced glass and metal cans. With the latter being have a greater ability for recycling. Your final two points are well taken: To stop exporting their plastic packaged goods & for technologically advanced countries to find practical alternatives especially for solving this problem in other countries.
