Yakuza are actually a fairly rules-oriented bunch with strict codes of conduct, family turf conflicts, and a whole lot of weird old rituals like chopping your pinky off when you screw up. You have to swear oath of loyalty to the patriarch to get in and everything. They just clearly don't care for the actual law as much as they probably should. Don't dishonor the clan and you can keep your pinky. You can get away with petty crimes, low-key illegitimate businesses, or even beating the crap out of people. Not like they'd retaliate with your kind of backing. But if someone actually dies the police can't look the other way even if they wanted to, and it just becomes a real hassle. Organized crime may play fast and loose with rules but they do have standards...if only for self-preservation's sake. You're here to put food on the table, not be evil for evil's sake. (manslaughter in self defense we are apparently okay with here) I have no explanation for how it is apparently possible to cultivate your physique and martial prowess through absorbing physical cash though. Maybe it only works during economic bubbles, where everyone on the street bleeds cash when you punch them.

Oh, trust me, Yakuza 0 makes even less sense with it's money than you'd think, and kind of runs into a serious issue with the story for the rest of the series because of it. In endgame, it's entirely possible in Yakuza 0 to have multiple trillions of yen. Considering when this game takes place, this would make Kiryu the #1 richest person IN THE WORLD. Literally worth more personally than the entirety of Microsoft, Google, Apple, etc. Yet he's basically almost dirt poor in every single subsequent game. And they never give an explanation for what in the world happened to that money, or his real estate business.
@apossiblyhereticalalphaleg35953 ай бұрын
@@AtomicArtumas well, one can assume it went under when he went to jail in yakuza 1. criminals, specially in the yakuza, won't exactly be allowed to keep all their possessions when they get out. hell, one can argue that kiryu's copious amounts of money just serve to solidify his legend as the dragon. the actual plot hole is majima, as you can easily get to 1 billion yen with him even as early as chapter 3 or 4 with enough shakedown farming or gambling scum, meaning that the entire point of the makoto hit is irrelevant to him rejoining the tojo clan.

@gwennorthcutt4213 ай бұрын
yeah, its not just crossing the murder line (japan's death/murder rates are a lot lower than the US for example) but specifically there being a gun, a far more controlled item.
@kenjutsukata1o1Ай бұрын
@@gwennorthcutt421 Though worth mentioning that the murder rate is not as low as they claim, since the Japanese police system (and their justice system as a whole) is corrupt as hell. Since Japan is an extremely reputation-based society saving face is everything, so the police do whatever it takes to preserve their positive reputation. Therefore any murder they can't solve is ruled a suicide, even if it's obviously a murder (dude stabbed himself in the back ten times for sure). Thus Japan's suicide numbers are inflated and their murder numbers are deflated. It's how the police maintain their 99% murders solved thing. Through bullshit. The Japanese justice system is one of the dark aspects of Japan that people generally don't talk about. I don't know if you've played Persona 5 or seen Dan's playthrough of it, but the opening scene where Joker is being coerced into confessing to being the leader of the Phantom Thieves isn't being played up for game drama, it's apparently a pretty accurate portrayal of how they get a conviction. Once they've decided they've got the right person they'll do whatever it takes to get them to 'confess' so they can wrap up the case and maintain their record. The whole game is actually a commentary on a bunch of problems in Japanese society that nobody wants to talk about.

As I understand, the yakuza are much different from other mafias in that they like to keep to mostly legitimate businesses. When you're heavily invested in real estate, you want crime to stay low as to keep the property value high. I'm sure their policies vary depending on region though. Their criminal acts tend to be stuff like illegal gambling, fraud, and selling stolen or banned goods. However there are a few groups who partake in the drug trade and even human trafficking. One interesting difference is how they run protection rackets. Instead of picking on small local businesses, they buy small amounts of stock in major corporations, which give them the right to attend stock holder meetings, where they then intimidate the other stock holders into doing what they want. There are also two known occasions where the Yakuza provided relief aid after major earthquakes in Japan. We're talking helicopters and hundreds of trucks full of food, water, and blankets. And apparently they're even present in North Korea. One guy got five years in prison for bribery and drug trafficking instead of, you know, just being executed. I imagine his stay in a North Korean prison was far more pleasant than usual considering his connections. Sh*t's wild. Actual yakuza members have stated that the Yakuza series of games is mostly accurate aside from the constant street fighting.

Below are the facts about the series I've left on a comment of the vod for the first stream for Daniel. -In Japan, the series is known as Ryū ga Gotoku which means Like a Dragon. With the title Yakuza being used to have players in the west be aware about what it's about. And eventually the rebrand to Like a Dragon was made. -Yakuza 0 is a prequel made after Yakuza 5, and as such adds depth to the characters who shows up in the series. -Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 are remakes of the first two games. With K2 being made in the Dragon Engine that was first used in Y6. Also Kiwami means Extreme. -Regarding the memes "Kiryu Never Kills" and "Rubber Bullets". The former is a mistranslation while the latter was made after the events of a certain game. -There is a spin off series that has two games. Those games are Judgement and Lost Judgement. In it, you play as Private Detective Takayuki Yagami who is working on finding out the truth of a major case. -An official Movie Adaption of the first game does exist. It's on the short side and I firmly believe that a certain character had made it himself. -The game Yakuza Dead Souls almost killed the series here in the West. As it was a third person shooter in the Zombie Survival genre. Also it takes place in an alternate timeline after the events of the second game.

Small corrections: -The series was recently rebranded as simply "Like a Dragon", not "Yakuza: Like a Dragon". -Dead Souls was a third person shooter, not first person. Also it takes place after Yakuza 4, not 2. Some additions: -There is a stage show based on the first game. You can find it on KZbin and it's worth watching for fans of the series (better than the movie imo) -There are two spin-off games on the PSP, Kurohyou 1&2. These were only released in Japan, but did get an English fan translation recently. I haven't played them myself, but I've heard good things. -There are two spin-offs that take place during the Edo Period in Japan, Kenzan (during 1605) and Ishin (during the 1860s). Kenzan has never been released outside of Japan, but Ishin was in the form of a remake.

Oh yeah, all the money that comes flying out of people's pockets like Sonic Rings? That's not just visual flair; in Yakuza 0, people you fight are just _that_ flush with cash, and because this is the 80's, bankcards weren't that widely adopted yet. Plus, since most of the people you fight obtained this money illegitimately, they can't really deposit it into a conventional bank either.

@@CaptainEffort I mean, Y0 is a prequel, he'd already gone that direction. I love him both ways, though.
@CaptainEffort3 ай бұрын
@@Spark--- Umm… you know that Y0, while chronologically taking place before the others, wasn’t *written* before the others, right? So like, if they decided to take his character in a different direction in Y0, that doesn’t change the writing in Y1 and Y2. As someone who played through the series starting from Y0, the transition of Majima’s character from Y0 to Y1 was comically jarring. It was painfully obvious that they wrote him one way in Y1, then decided they didn’t want him to be a villain so they slowly retconned it through the rest of the games, finally fully retconning it in Y0. Like he straight up killed people and kidnapped children in Y1 lol, he was a psychopath. Not just a good hearted dude who acted a little eccentric.
