Story 3: This is why some dentists recommend patients to get any kind of dental procedure done one month BEFORE your travel date. So that any problems that might occur after the procedure can be addressed immediately, not while you're holidaying a thousand miles away and hurting very badly. Also crowns placed on the teeth after a root canal procedure can crack or pop off due to the change in pressure while on the airplane (happened to a family member who did root canal and had newly-fitted crown). Dentists would tell you to let the crown 'rest' and get fully set for a period of time.

As a Michigan local, The Great Lakes. People who aren't from bordering states in the US don't seem to take into account that these lakes are just as powerful as most seas, and they absolutely have the same hazards alongside also being fresh water. They have rip currents, waves reaching as high as 29 feet, and are capable of snapping full-size freighters in half. I remember hearing from my friend at my rival university, which was within walking distance of the largest of the lakes, Lake Superior, that people would misjudge the waves and be swept off the rocks at the shore to drown. They aren't kidding - ask the locals about hazards.

A few years back I was going through my driver's license classes and these 2 little girls were riding bikes on the sidewalk (there's no bike lane in this part of town), there's a crosswalk coming up and they show no signs of crossing it so I don't slow down (in my country pedestrians have the precedence when passing over the crosswalk), then suddenly one of the girls takes a really sharp angle onto the sidewalk, my car was basically on the sidewalk, both me and my instructor ram that brake pedal like there's no tomorrow (the cars we take our classes and tests on have commands on both sides of the vehicle). After that my instructor pulled up the car beside them and told her what she should and shouldn't do I was half a second away from taking a young girl's life, I was mortified after that experience. I passed my exam a few weeks after that, but I have barely driven a car since getting my license. I've always been taught to look left then right then left again before crossing the road, and that includes on crosswalks and on traffic lights crosswalks as well. Just because we have precedence does not make the cars going fast able to suddenly stop. LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP PEOPLE, please. If you get hit on the crosswalk because you neglected to look before moving, you're ruining the life of 2 or possibly more people, the driver's and your own.

To answer the title's question: my old high-school biology teacher. In one of my first ever classes with her, she taught us about flesh-eating bacteria, and told us about a friend she had who had this weird, fast-spreading rush on her leg that they ignored for a couple of hours, and by the time they finally decided to go to the hospital, it was too late and they died shortly after. Cool story, you may think, a good way to teach us about the subject. Well, not long after, we had a class where she taught about Botulinum toxin, and again told about a late friend of hers that somehow ingested it and died within minutes. Then, a few months later, we learned about Polio, and, you guessed it, a friend of hers died from it fairly quickly (we live in a first world country. Polio is only something we ever hear about happening in far away places). Some time later, the biology teacher told about a friend that stayed in an enclosed space and died from CO (carbon-monoxide) poisoning. At some point, me and my colleagues realized that if she's telling the truth (and why would she lie, she's a teacher), then she was either cursed by the god of bad-luck, or, more likely, enjoys murdering her friends in obscure and inventive ways. Either way, fraternizing with her is far deadlier than what anyone would expect.

Oh! I also have a "deadlier than you think" kind of fact for you all--FUCKING ASBESTOS. I work as an analyst finding this deadly fluff rock in all sorts of materials, but here are places you can find it that are unexpected: 1. Antique Cars (usually in breaks but ALSO undercoating) 2. Old instruments (we had a piano that was absurdly high) 3. Old ovens Why was asbestos in these things, you ask? Well, asbestos is highly chemically resistant, highly heat resistant, and excellent for sound proofing. They used this shit in the Apollo rocket. Generally, the guide to "oh is my old thing asbestos-prone" is heat + anything before 1980 (I'd say 1990 to be sure to be honest.) Did your old thing need to be fireproofed? IT PROBABLY FUCKING HAS ASBESTOS. If you're not sure, please please please send your shit to a lab. Some of the diseases asbestos causes can have 50 YEAR INCUBATION PERIODS (Asbestosis, which isn't fatal anymore with treatment) and a lot of them are pretty damn fatal (Melanoma.) In conclusion, please don't fuck with the cancer rock and please be careful of antiques.

I used to have to walk on train tracks going to and from work. Just a few things to help those who may also find themselves in that situation: First, cardio. If you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, you might still have time to get to a safer spot. Second, do NOT wear headphones anywhere near those tracks. If you're paying attention, you'll be able to hear the train coming from quite a distance. Third, learn the damn train schedule. Fourth, and this leads back to the first one, light, close-toed shoes that you can run in. And make sure the things are tied tight. If you have to bolt across a train bridge to out run the train, you don't want to trip over some loose shoelaces. All of this is what worked for me, though, dont trust that for yourself. And finally, try your best to find another, safer, route.

I couldn't think, sleep, eat, nothing but cry and gargle vodka lol. My face was locked in spasm on the side of my face the infection was and I could see it in the mirror! I went to the ER on Christmas Day, and got started on antibiotics and painkillers, but by the time I could get to the dentist a couple of days later after my doctor called them and insisted they see me immediately, I couldn't open my mouth more than a few centimetres, not even enough to fit my toothbrush in my mouth! That crossing the street one is for real. I drive a 10,000 lb vehicle and there is one street I used to have to take regularly with lots of crosswalks. People would shoot out from behind a bush, hit the button and immediately start crossing without even looking or waiting for the light to engage. I had to honk my horn a few times at people in warning because even though I was under the speed limit, 10,000 lbs doesn't just stop and there was zero chance of me being able to break in time. The sheer stupidity of people boggles me. I've also had cars cut me off and then suddenly slow down to make a turn. So far I have been able to avoid an accident but people seriously misjudge how fast something with heft can stop. I tend to anticipate what people are going to do around me so that I can avoid an accident but one of these days it wont be enough and it wont be me that gets hurt.

And also people shouldn’t hit back harder than they were hit (I have been intimidated into hitting someone, I held back so it barely was feelable, then got hit back so hard I was bruised for a week. Sure I should’ve just walked away at some point but that was an excessive amount of force in response to a pretty weak hit).

Story 48 anecdotes: I worked in a factory that made skid steers on an assembly line. Sometimes the dollies would jump track and hit each other. The number of people I had to stop from stepping in between two machines on a collision course was insane. Brother, it will take me 3 minutes to fix the paint, it's not worth dying over. Another woman kept working on a machine while the assembly line moved, big no-no, her steel toe boot got trapped under the dolly. Broke her leg in 4 places before anyone made it to the E-stop. People lost fingers there a lot too, just doing stupid stuff. One put a zip tie around a broken drill to hold it together, it moved up to the trigger, so the drill didn't stop when she let go. Her glove got sucked into the rotating part, she ended up losing her thumb. Ripped the whole tendon out all the way up to her elbow. They reattached the thumb, but couldn't fix the tendon, so the thumb is just decoration now. Another kid lost the screwdriver we shoved between two sliding pieces of metal to hold them in place while we connected them, decided to put his finger in there instead. They couldn't reattach that one. Be careful out there, kids.

Diabetes. I have type 2 diabetes and people don't realize how easily it can screw up or body. I find it crazy every time where something happens to me or someone else whos diabetic where our blood sugar will be too low or too high and people just brush it off. For example I take metformin and it's at specific times so I can't take it when my blood sugar is too high, I ate school lunch one day and it spiked my blood sugar so bad that I felt lightheaded. For context I've been taking meds for my diabetes for almost two years and never had my blood sugar spike that bad. I went to the nurses office and they didn't test my blood sugar or anything because I don't have one of those little monitors that go on your arm or something so they were skeptical when I said my blood sugar was high. I'm highly in tune with my body and can immediately tell when something is off and what it is. He's on quite a lot of meds now and the most obvious affect now having been diabetic for 25 years is neuropathy, which causes him quite a bit of pain at times. Edit to add: it greatly annoys me in films showing depictions of diabetes where they give insulin to people because of having low blood sugar. Like, sure, just go ahead and kill someone by lowering their blood sugars even more... Which just goes to show how ignorant a lot of people still are about it.

As a seasoned forager here, the story at 16:00 isn't really accurate. Please don't scare people from such a fun activity. No two plants are exactly the the same ever. The key is research, through as many identifying factors as possible. as an example the closest looking plants I can think of are wild lettuce and sow thistle (look up pictures for reference) and the thing is, neither of them have any toxic lookalikes. There's more non toxic plants than toxic plants. And when looking for one of these two, all you have to look for is if there's spines underneath the leaf on the middle vein. If there's spines, it's wild lettuce 100%. If there's not it could be dandelion or sow thistle, but then they both are very distinct. There's articles of the identifying factors of all plants you can think of. (What it looks like, average shape, growing season, flower shapes, height, smell, taste, what happens when you cut it open, where it grows, etc.)
@sillyjellyfish242124 күн бұрын
My thoughts exactly. If people mix edible and poisonous beries based on "it's a berry and it's black" while also entirely ignoring the fact that the edible one should grow in clusters on a bush and the poisonous one is a single berry on a soft bodied plant sitting in the middle of a leaf "dish" then that's on them (herb paris vs blueberry in this particular case)
@EvanToler23 күн бұрын

If you are in a situation where you have to scavenge for food, there are methods to test berries and mushrooms and whatnot. You start by rubbing a small portion of your skin with the item. Then after like half an hour if you don't have a reaction, rub it on your gums. Then after half an hour if you don't have a reaction, eat a small bite. Then after half an hour if you don't have a reaction, you can probably eat more. But be careful that you're picking the same thing. You never know when two identical berries will be right next to each other. And you also have to be careful for bugs because they're also attracted to the safe to eat berries.

It took a suicide attempt to get any help and then took about 2 years of constant therapy (I couldn't even work) I am doing better now. It doesn't cure it but God it helps to deal and maintain it. Edit: I was 26 when I finally got help. Please don't be afraid to ask for help. It could save your life

44:20 we did evolve to be in the sun. That’s why Africans have darker skin, dark skin is better at handling sunlight than lighter skin. But when humans migrated north into Europe and Asia they experienced a lot less sun exposure and thus didn’t have an evolutionary advantage to keep darker skin. So now we have people with light skin who burn easily despite our ancestors living in the sun effectively 24/7 and being for the most part okay with it.

I've never lived in a house that was actually properly grounded or wired. We still had the old cloth wiring with the bells at most of the places I lived in, and there wasn't even a ground wire running to the house. Where I live now still doesn't have a ground wire, has the old wiring, and has four rooms on a single breaker, etcetera. The breaker box is in an unfinished cellar where there are mud puddles after it rains . There are apparently no wiring codes or building codes in general where I live. I've had to prevent electrical fires and shorts and throw away so many appliances because they just melt due to the poor wiring, I've been electrocuted. I don't know how many times, and that's just normal. Rural Midwest for anyone who is curious. 1:09:20

Going cold turkey on any medication isn’t a very good idea. I was taking some that really messed me up because I was misdiagnosed and even slowly easing off them with my doctors knowledge was horrible. I’m talking headaches so bad I couldn’t think, dehydration which I already struggle with, and my mental health wasn’t a having a good time either. Stay safe because even if you think the side effects won’t apply to you that’s exactly what I thought. And I can attest to the heat one. 9:50 honestly the BDSM community would absolutely support the post that says “if if hurts stop” when talking about toys. That kind of pain is not the same as consensual purposeful pain that gives the sub a pleasurable sensation. It is not supposed to be a “something is very wrong here” kind of pain, if you are with a partner you would use a safe word in that situation, and the dom would honour that and stop everything immediately. Start low, increase slow, that goes for anything new in the realm of sex; be it experimenting with toys, or BDSM, or anything else.

Volunteer firefighter here. I second the smoke PSA 100%. One or two breaths are enough to revoke your membership of the Being Alive Club permanently. It is also extremely disorienting. If you are in a building with thick smoke from a working fire, your visibility is zero. It is pitch black. No, the flames won’t light your way. And you also won’t see your windows. You’ll have a hard time even seeing your hand in front of your eyes. In most cases you can’t even see the flames until you are almost right in front of them. We have had firefighters that sustained severe life threatening burn injuries because they got so disoriented that they couldn’t find their way out when the temperature suddenly shot up. After a Mayday call, they were found 3 feet from the door of a basement that was largely empty save for some construction material. (Both lived and are back at work after many months of recovery) If you are in an apartment complex and you have a fire in your apartment: Take everyone in that place with you and GTFO. Rule of thumb: If the flames are already higher than 2-3 ft, you’re not gonna put that fire out. Close all the doors in your apartment on the way out, especially the entrance. Otherwise smoke from your place might pour into the hallway and potentially block a an important escape route. Leave your key in the door if you have it and call 911 immediately. Whatever you do: Never, NEVER go with the idea of „I will just hold my breath and make a run for it through the smoke“. That will get you killed. You might trip and fall, you might encounter a door that is locked. People were found right in front of locked doors they had thought would get them out. They thought they could make it, realized that the door was locked and couldn’t make it back. Get to a window and make yourself visible. If you have your phone, call 911 again and tell them exactly where you are and how many are with you. Stay safe out there!

Horses. There's a kinda touristy-type place not far from where I live, where you can pay for a day with the horses. It's like an experience, you get to experience a small piece of stable life and ride out in the wilderness. Well, a lot of people come here because they want to "connect with the wild" or something, and don't know how to ride at all. We always ask someone how much equine experience they have before we ride, because we don't want anyone to get hurt. Some idiots choose to lie about this though, and then get bucked off. Some people don't realize how easily a horse can kill you. A kick to the head? You'd be lucky to survive. Fall off in rocky terrain? A friend was paralyzed from the neck down. Fall off and get your head stepped on? You'd be lucky if your head wasn't squashed like a watermelon. One time, a young woman, about 23 I think, claimed she had been riding for two years. I wasn't there at work that day, and I have no idea how they didn't realize she had only ever sat on some abused circus pony once or twice when she was a kid. Tried to set into a gallop to go in front of her instructor, but she just started slamming her leg at the horse and basically hitting him with her arms and the reins. Got flung down a really steep hill that went straight down. Hit a ton of trees and bushes. When the ambulance got as close as it could and the doctors(is that what they are? english is not my first language. whatever the word for the ambulance people who arrive first is.) got down there, she was unconscious but barely clinging on to life. She died on her way to the closest hospital. Family was devastated, left a fiance and her little sister which they adopted with a huge hole. Horses are no joke, don't lie about your skill level. It can prove to be fatality.

To add to the infection story. Some infections you have no idea are happening. If you have sudden pain on the left side of your body but no external cause for it, go to the ER, if your lucky its just kidney stone. Otherwise it could be your appendix. If its the right, but you struggle with bowel movements, gallstones. I had to have surgery to remove a large gallstone that was causing a blockage. At the time, NO infection to the gallbladder, but because gallstones cause issues the organ needed to be removed, but I held off because I was hours of way of leaving for vacation. But had surgery to have it removed early the following month. Again, NO signs of infection. 11 days after returning? Full on infection, to the point that I was suffering from gangrene and sepsis.
@demahh9861Ай бұрын
Infection from a blockage in the gallbladder bile duct can go from 0-100 in less than 24 hours; not to mention the pain. And yes it can kill you, just like appendicitis. Writing this from experience. I was hospitalized for a week (due to severe pain and vomiting) before the pain started to subside as my gallbladder slowly started to leak the infected fluid into my abdominal cavity. The leaking fluid released the pressure that was causing my pain. My vitals and blood work started to go downhill so quickly. I had surgery about 12 hours later, and instead of the usual 1/2 hour it takes to do it laparoscopicly, it took 5+ hours and multiple cuts to my abdomen to get my giant gallbladder out and clean out the fluid. Doctors sometimes don't really treat gallbladder pain until it literally starts to kill you.
@KeyleeyАй бұрын
@@demahh9861 I managed to have the gallstone that was causing the blockage removed, it took longer than it should have because the initial hospital I went to, doesnt have a doctor to due the procedure. (That was my fault for going there in the first place, I should have known better) and had to go to a better hospital. Luckily the stone was able to removed with out being cut open, and I got to enjoy my vacation. The muscle soreness was annoying, but it was fine after some swimming. But I knew something was wrong when the pain returned, and vomit was green. Never thought I would say this, but thanks animal planet and the show "Monsters Inside of Me" as I knew green vomit was bile. I returned to the hospital, and scheduled for the first surgery of the day, different surgeon because the original surgeon was on vacation. I wish I paid attention to the time, but the doctor also mentioned a few complication with removal because the organ was just basically turning to dust when being touched (her words not mine) and because there was a possibility of some of the inefected organ remaining I was attached to a surgical drain for like a week. I feel like it is also the same with appendicitis as well. I've heard story of people being dismissed of pain until they are also close to death. But I'm glad that it seems we both had pretty good doctors at the time, and we both survived. But there is an irony with my situation. My mother, older sister, and I all had our gallbladders removed in our 20s, but I was the only one with gallstones. But I have to keep an eye on my Niece once she reaches her 20s as I believe this may be a possible genetic condition at this point and she can have a problem arising when she reaches of age.

I visited Hawaii as a preteen. I remember the warnings and how easy it would be for things to go terribly wrong if someone was reckless or just wasn't aware of the dangers. Stay on the trails. Pay attention to the tourist guides and warning signs. Watch out for road closures. We talked to a local fireman who had come back from an unsuccessful search/rescue. He speculated that the people had possibly fallen down a steam vent (implication: they wouldn't be found). We also saw another rescue operation hoisting someone back up a cliff. Definitely be careful in Hawaii. Take the warnings seriously.

(33:12) When I was in first grade I slipped at recess onto the pavement and got a really bad scrape because of it. A teacher took me to the nurses office, and the nurse rinsed my scrape and bandaged it up, and sent me back outside. When I got home that day I didn't tell my mom because the scrape no longer hurt, so I didn't feel the need too. My mom found out a day or two later and cleaned it with Hydrogen peroxide, took a picture, and sent it to my Oma(grandma) and asked if I needed to be taken to an ER or if it was safe to wait it out. I was later taken to the ER, was put on antibiotics, and had to be in the hospital for a total of five days. If my mom didn't find out, I wouldn't be here to this day. I had a bacterial infection, specially a sign of "Lymphangitis," where the infection is spreading through the Lymphatic system, the green color(that is typically around the original scrape/cut) often signifies the presence of a bacteria called "Pseudomonas aeruginosa," which can produce a greenish discharge. If it wasn't well explained, the red line(the lymphangitis thing) is a sign of the infection spreading. I had both of these on my right wrist. If the red line proceeded any further the infection would've reached my heart, and take over, resulting in death. So, thanks mom for saving my life, with your super hero mom powers!👍 If it's not obvious enough, PLEASE, properly clean your wounds, and DO NOT just "rub some dirt in it," if you ever have any of these symptoms PLEASE go to the nearest medical professional. They will save your life!!

Probably a nothing-burger, but nurses are taught the idea of therapeutic communication, which pretty much is how to professionally talk to the patient while remaining not rude nor liable to the law. That kinda goes out the window if the patient is s-sidal, though, because the idea is that the nurse has to know how the patient will rage-quit from this world and thus should ask them about it. Well, there's also the s-side watch thing, where nurse has to keep away from the patient absolutely anything that COULD or MIGHT be used as a tool for s-side, and the part where the patient has to be watched by the nurse either all the time or in random but frequent intervals.

The Olanzapine cold turkey story. Here's my experience: my GP was meant to drop it from 60mg to 0 over 3 months (30, 15, 0 each month); dropped it to 0 immediately. After 12 years. I was on it because of abusive partner (very nearly killed me). When I came off it, for 6 weeks it was...hideous. balance issues, temperature regulation went right out the window, the headaches, the nausea, feeling so sick by the end of a day of work (worked through the whole comedown)....but nothing, NOTHING would prepare me for when my memory started waking up...and remembering all her abuse, what she did. The nightmares, the nights of an hour of sleep only....it was absolutely horrendous. After about 8 weeks, it tailed off...and left me alone. This was 2022. I'm so so much better now, and as a bonus, I lost about 30 pounds in 8 weeks (olanzapine made me gain weight up to 220lbs - am 6ft3 - from 164lbs before it), just by quitting it.

28:05 that's hard because many people only have wood stoves for heat
@sillyjellyfish242124 күн бұрын
Propery maintained and used stove will always be better than one with a clogged chimney. Also, many modern wood burners are build to be more efficient, meaning that all those evaporated incompletely burned particles that would usually get just carried away are recirculated back towards the burning fuel, where they actually get burned to almost pure CO2 and water. But for these things to work properly, those burners need a good air intake and they need to be well maintained, so nothing inside gets too covered in ash and sud. And sure, they still produce said CO2 which isn't ideal, but thanks to the recirculation and more complete burn they are much more efficient than older faulty burners, so in order to heat your place, you would need less wood in the first place and fumes end up not containing carcinogens. So, little wins.
