In Part 4 of this six-part series on CrossFit’s definition of fitness, Seminar Staff Head Trainer Jenn Hunter-Marshall breaks down CrossFit’s fourth model of fitness: the sickness-wellness-fitness continuum.
“This continuum represents your health,” Hunter-Marshall says during a Level 1 Certificate Course presented at CrossFit South Philly in early 2021, “so that fitness is just a state of super health.”
We have observed that nearly every measurable value of health can be placed on a continuum that ranges from sickness to wellness to fitness. Though tougher to measure, we would even add mental health to this observation.
Examples of such values include blood pressure, body-fat percentage, heart rate, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, among others.
“The fittest will have all of their parameters or markers going in the direction of fit,” Hunter-Marshall explains.
Done right, fitness provides a great margin of protection against the ravages of time and disease. Where you find otherwise, examine the fitness protocol, especially diet. Fitness is and should be “super-wellness.” Sickness, wellness, and fitness are measures of the same entity.
“We don’t know what’s gonna happen in life,” Hunter-Marshall says. “Because life happens for all of us, and we have no control over it, but ... there are certain things that we do have control over, and if we can use those things that we have control over to push us (to fitness), we’re creating the best line of defense for ourselves when something goes awry.”

@@Jaybrigante3 - thanks. Only a short one. We used to have one of those “peanut roasters” at my Scout group that we used to do the raffle with 😜

It's been long enough. @crossfit can you please replace this video with people NOT wearing absolutely absurd masks?

Just move your body, eat right & get some rest, e.g. go for a run or cycle 3x a week & lift weights 3x a week while also adding mobility work. crossfit didn’t invent anything new

That depends on how you define “invent.” Technically, the first time the mobile phone was sold, it wasn’t anything new, it was just a phone… but the fact that it wasn’t attached to a cord in a house or office was a game changer. CrossFit may not have “invented” any new movements, but it certainly created a methodology that is new, original, and extremely effective.

I can't watch these. This person talking about fitness, while wearing the idiotic, completely unnecessary surgical mask, creates too much cognitive dissonance, and puts her credibility into question.

These were required by state law. Everyone was doing their best during a difficult time. I attended a seminar during the pandemic and they were very honest about wishing they weren’t required, and some ppl didn’t wear them, and it was all good. Honestly, we were all grateful just to be there. The childish behavior that still exists about masks is dumbfounding. People get triggered so easily these days. I’m not for or against masks. Do no harm, be a generally nice human and let people make their own decisions for themselves. The message here in the video is gold. I’m sure one day CF will update their videos, but until then, y’all just need to grow up a little
