What is Flashback in Literature?
A flashback in literature is a narrative technique that interrupts the chronological sequence of a story to interject events of earlier occurrence. It is a scene that takes place before a story begins or at another point in time. It can be a reminiscence or a recall of a character or the writer. It can provide background information, insights, context, or clarity about a character, event, or relationship. It is sometimes known as an ‘analepsis’.
Examples of Flashback:
1. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, where the whole story is a flashback told by a housekeeper.
2. The Odyssey by Homer, where Odysseus recounts his adventures to the Phaeacians.
