Thi s video discusses the military rebellion in Russia? What is it? an act of defiance? an act of desperation by a super-patriotic hero? Is it a well-prepared mutity by an overambitious field commander? Or is it a well-prepared attempt to destabilize Russia authored in Kiev or maybe even in London?
Dr. Brovkin is a Russian-born American historian now retired who served as an Associate Professor of Soviet History at Harvard University. He is the author of Russia After Lenin, Behind the Frontlines of the Civil War, The Mensheviks After October, Dear Comrades, Velikaya Oktiabrskaya Katastrofe (in Russian) and other books. available on Amazon

Thank you for clarifying this confusing situation! One thing you said at 8:50 that factories working round the clock got me interested: could you weight in on how the state system "woke up" after war started and what exactly does "kicking into gear" for war mean? what's being done? and i don't mean only the factories, what other measures are being taken? and are they falling back on soviet (or soviet inspired) systems to better manage the war effort? do we see prioritization of minerals and ores for war production? do we see more mining? how is re-training the conscripts going? How is the draft effecting the economy and what's being done about that? and what's going on with apartment credits of people who are drafted? i remember there was an issue there, a clash between modern economic reality and mobilization which is a relic institution predating apartment credits. Perhaps this could be a topic for a video? To my knowledge contemporary Russia is the only example we have of a large country very seriously gearing up for a (almost total?) war that will decide it's future in upcoming decades, so it's a (bit morbidly) interesting topic. But anyhow, thank you for keeping us updated!

@vladimirbrovkin4052 Dr. Brovkin, I am a recent new subscriber and I am now listening to all the videos on your playlist, "Issues of Contemporary Politics". Here am I, having just finished number 16 of the 37 in the current list. I just want to take a moment to express how much I am enjoying these contemporary analyses of the known facts as they were at the time of the original postings. On this day, my 63rd birthday, I just wish I had had access to this kind of intellectual stimulation fifty years ago. I think I might well have been inspired to follow a very different career path and studied history and geopolitics as a potential career path! And now, video #17 awaits my attention...

Thank you for this video, Dr Brovkin. At the time of the coup, I had wondered if Prigozhin's failed coup has closer parallels to the Kornilov Affair of 1917, or the Razin / Pugachev Rebellions of old Russia. What is your opinion?

Yes it is possible, but the Western media forgets to mention that those who critisize the Ministry of Defense or even Putin himself do so from the position of what they call Angry patriots. They want to conduct the war better, harder and win compteley by taking Kiev. The Western medi loves anyone who criticizes Putinm forgetting that they are more nationalitic and hard-line than Putin.

It will be interesting to find out in the next few weeks how much support Prigozhin had from his own staff. What was all the cash at Wagner HQ for? How many soldiers were actually involved and how many truly knew what was going down? I would not be surprised to see Prigozhin returned to Russia for "breaking" some rule of his exile agreement. This whole circus show has greatly harmed Wagner's legacy.

I do not suggest that Prigozhin is working for Ukraine. But what he does is profitable for Ukraine. Moreover, chaos in Moscow is the desired goal of the Kiev regime and their London advisers. Whether Prigozhin realized it or not a military rebellion in Moscow is to the benefir of Ukraine and NATO.

What makes you think he is so stupid as to not realize something that is obvious to literally everyone else on the planet?
