I have a lot to say about the whole Fields vs Caleb thing... 1st, to be fair to Caleb, the offensive line is atrocious. It was also horrible, as far as pass blocking goes, when Fields was here. Yet we still had the #1 ranked rush offense in 2022 and the #2 ranked rush offense last season. 2nd, Poles decided to go all in this season, yet also decided to put that team into the hands of a rookie QB who most of us knew was going to struggle no matter how many weapons they gave him. Fields on the other hand had a great chemistry with people like Moore and Kmet, and Fields also masked a lot of problems that the O Line had because he could run. Caleb is slower and smaller than Fields, which makes a bad O Line even more of a problem than it was last season. 3rd, Fields was never the problem and all he needed was a decent defense to succeed, and the proof is right in front of us with the Steelers being 3-0. Fields spent almost a year playing with a historically bad defense, one that gave up 31 PPG for 14 straight weeks (an NFL record), but what happened when the defense got better last season after the Sweat trade? The team, with Fields as their starter, went 5-3 and that could've easily been 7-1, but the defense blew 2 double digit leads in the 4th quarter of games against the Browns and the Lions. We were up 12 points against the Lions with less than 4 minutes to go and Eberflus put the defense into prevent for some reason, giving Goff easy 15-20 yard throws. And lastly, Fields was still putting up 25-35 PPG and still losing because of that defense he had. He was the only reason the Bears were watchable during that losing streak. Out of those 14 straight losses, 9 of those were by one score. It was a weird stretch where the Bears offense was miles ahead of the defense, which isn't Chicago Bears football lol. I also want to shout out Swift for being horrible. Waldron, too. Not just the play calling, but Swift is getting under 2 yards per carry and we have Herbert and Roschon just riding the bench for some reason when they have had success the few times they've been put into the game. It just doesn't make sense and you would think a good coach would bench someone who isn't playing well and instead replace him with someone who is playing well with the few chances they get to touch the football. Especially Herbert... Dude is a beast and I've probably seen him on 5 or 6 snaps in the last 3 weeks, and he has our only rushing touchdown so far. But yeah, just wanted to vent all of that lmfao. It was never a "Caleb vs Justin" thing for me personally... It was a "should we be putting this team in the hands of a rookie QB instead of keeping Fields who was making strides with the team and finally has a good defense to back him up" thing.
