I am a first generation Ukrainian American, and my dad told me a completely different story of where the slav squat came from: Back in the good ol' USSR days, when "cops" walked around with ARs, they would make people who they detained sit on the ground (similar to how today's US cops tell you to get on the ground and show your hands) so that the cops can monitor the suspect easily. As good Boris said in this video, the ground was too cold for your ass. So the two main options when sitting was to be on your knees or squat. And you best believe ain't nobody was getting on their knees for cops! So the slav squat wiggled it's way into lower middle class culture (as lower middle class individuals tended to have run ins with cops). It's a cultural meme nowadays, but my dad said back in the day, if you saw someone slav squatting whilst casually going about their business of smoking or speaking to someone... it was more than likely that that individual has been in trouble w cops and has been through some shit.

@@suzukirider9030 True, but criminals probably aren’t all that different anywhere and in the American South where I live and work, most people don’t have a lot of money. Everywhere probably people who get in trouble tend to not be the high earning types for the most part. So often we are taking some small amount down and then there’s always an excuse for why the monthly payments aren’t being made. I have file cabinets full of files from clients who never paid everything they owed and never will. Sometimes I can make several thousand dollars on a case I can resolve with a couple of hours of work. Other times I’m not making minimum wage. It’s not as great as you might think.
@suzukirider90303 жыл бұрын
@@harryamos7869 These Russian gopniks don't hire attorneys, trust me :-) It's different in the U.S., where it seems that people of all income categories get run-ins with the law now and then, mostly depends on personality. Those who can afford bail, and a layer - can make it through with less consequences. The bail system is actually very f-ed up, most people don't realize until they get into it. Pay to get out of jail, like seriously, it's THAT straightforward? Granted I could afford to, but sure as hell sucks for those who cannot. And then some Russian emigrants here say Russia is corrupt. Silly. Thing is, in Russia - EVERYONE knows the system is corrupted A.F. and you gotta have connections to thrive. In the U.S. - most people, and especially immigrants - think the system is fair, and it punishes only criminals, which are always someone else, not them - up until one day it IS them, lol. Although, it seems that the last couple years it seems the U.S. is going through some eye-opening experience though. People of all social classes rapidly losing trust in the system. Not sure wtf is this gonna lead to... :-|
@harryamos78693 жыл бұрын
@@suzukirider9030 They have to bond out here too and sometimes the bond is quite high. I just finished up a case where my client has a $200,000 bond. They can use a bail bondsman and pay 10% of that plus some extra fees, but they never get any of that back. The bail bondsman made a lot more money than I did on that case. Sometimes they let people out of signature bods but judges hate those. They want a bondman on the hook for a lot of money who will help make sure the person shows up for court. Our system certainly isn't always fair, but it's really not that corrupt either. I have never paid anyone a bribe nor have any bribes ever been solicited from me and I have handled many thousands of criminal cases in so many different two states. I quit counting at 4,000 many years ago. So many times clients have suggested bribes. They watch too much TV or they think we are in Mexico or something. It just doesn't work that way. No doubt there are judges and police officers who take bribes somewhere, but I sure haven't seen it.
@suzukirider90303 жыл бұрын
@@harryamos7869 So in over 4'000 cases handled you've never witnessed a bribe successfully given or taken? Perhaps they indeed don't exist at this level. They exist on a few levels above - but they are called differently. Bonds - for once. Lobbying laws - for another case. It's not corruption if it's legal, right? Even if the law that's making it legal is created after some multi-million "donation" from some fat-cat businessman to some politician. That said, for us grunts at least there's some peace of mind that the law works the way it's designed (and published). At least we have the luxury of knowing how exactly we will be screwed and how exactly we can pay our way out of trouble.

Hi Boris, "nacos" and "narcos" aren't the same thing, even though they can intersect. The term is originally Mexican but idk if it's been adopted elsewhere. Narcos being exclusively drug dealers, a naco generally means someone with bad taste and it isn't limited to the lower classes since you can have rich people being nacos. A rich person with too many gold chains or custom car that might have something like purple lights under it might be naco. A wedding with a theme for their favorite sports team. Painting your hair blonde when you have dark skin or any weird color like pink, green, etc, or a man with long hair and bad hair cut or some stupid tattoo like Bart Simpson or under dressing for specific occasions or having odd clothing combinations like a suit with white snickers. Not being able to read social situations and fitting into general society can also get this label. A lot of Mexicans will call white middle class Americans who have more money than them nacos for example, because they eat with paper plates and plastic forks and wear those white sneakers with jeans.
@warsawx2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I don't think "naco" is the correct term. I'm thinking "vago" suits better for the definition of Gopnik. You could even argue that the term "chaka" can be used in Mexico.
@woetotheconquered34512 жыл бұрын
@@warsawx The thing is that Spanish can have different meanings depending on where you're from. I lived in Sonora and Sinaloa and "chaka" means badass, not a group per say and there's banda names or corridors with the term. "vago" is closer to "party boy", and probably cholo would be closer to gopnik in my area, but gopnik doesn't translate directly to gang member.

In most cases, Katsuage(カツアゲ) means blackmail in Japanese. I think the Gopnik is near the "DQN(dokyun)" or "Mild Yankee(Yanki)". Yankee means "American" in all over the world. But in Japan, the meaning is changed to "teenager or younger street gang". Mild Yankees are less aggressive than Yankees, but their ecology is like Gopnik. Because they like wearing track suits, listen the music popular in Yankees(EXILE, Kumi Koda, Eikichi Yazawa, Ayumi Hamazaki) and low educated. They work in a low paid job, but some mild Yankees work in high paid blue color job(like car assembly factory). They married younger because mild Yankee girl become pregnant. The biggest difference Gopnik and mild Yankee is habitat. Many of mild Yankees live in a provincial cities. In these provincial cities, People must have cars, so a mild Yankees love cars. The feature of mild Yankees car is flashy and low-downed even in mini-van.

To be precise, the term "高普尼克" is just a Chinese translation of the Russian Gopnik and does not referring to the actual low-level hardly-working manual labor working class youngsters wearing unsophisticated gears making troubles on the streets in the respective culture. I believe the mainland Chinese and Hongkonger termed it differently due to vastly different society they are in, but in Taiwan we call such low-level "unskilled youngsters rejected by society" as "八嘎囧" and pronounced as "ba-ga-jong".

In Japanese gopniks are called DQN (pronounced Do-“Q”-n.) You often see them squatting in front of convenience stores eating snacks and smoking. (Katsuage as Boris mentioned is the act of mugging. One of DQN’s favorite activities)
@henriqueribeiro81674 жыл бұрын
They are very different from Yanki?
@EddVCR4 жыл бұрын
@Henrique Ribeiro Great observation!! Yanki’s also share a lot of similar attributes as DQN, as they love to smoke and snack while squatting, yet the term “Yanki” points to young greaser/girl gang delinquents whereas DQN can point to people of any age, with or without the signature pompadour hairdo/girl gang attributes (like long skirts & dyed blond hair.) So you can say that Yanki’s are under the broader umbrella of DQN. Having said that, there are physical attributes that help a seasoned habitat observer identify DQNs: • They love wearing tracksuits for maximum comfort and squatting efficiency • They love flashy hairdos and colors. The signature Yanki hairdos fall into this category. • They wear a lot of big gold jewelry. • For footwear, a lot of them love wearing slides, especially Hello Kitty ones or massage slide sandals. Don’t ask me about their affinity for Hello Kitty slides, I have no idea where that comes from. • As for their natural habitat, they often can be found squatting around 24-hour convenience stores or a chain discount store called Don Quixote, which is also open 24 hours. They tend to squat in social groups, smoking and snacking. Because they’re loud and tend to ignore common sense, the DQNs are unfortunately hated in broader Japanese society, and the vast majority of non-DQN Japanese people wish for their extinction.

In Turkey we call them Apaçi/Apaçiler (Apache/Apaches). They fashion themselves with unimaginable haircuts. Some of their biggest hobbies are drift racing with garbage looking 50 year old cars and singing Arabesque Rap furiously. And they also have a very unique way of dancing, almost like a tropical bird's mating signal.

I tried to think of the Czech word for Gopnik and I realized that 1) there isn't one and 2) I was actually a gopnik for a couple of years myself and I had the best time ever! :D

Ahh yes, the "Tambay"! Your good old shirtless, rum drinking(or beer if its the first week of the month), sidewalk squatting, cigarette smoking gopniks of the Philippines.

Do they do anything other than that? Or are the Tambay basically the same useless low class working citizen that the gopnik is?

"Tambay" or "istambay" is a corruption of the English word "Stand by". A reference to the jobless delinquents who hang out or "stand by" the corner alley making catcalls at passing girls and extorting money from hapless citizens who pass by while gambling or smoking cheap cigarettes and drinking cheap beer or liquor.
